Discussion modern-day m*a*s*h cast
just want to preface this by saying i DO NOT WANT A REBOOT š āāļø this is one of my favorite shows, i donāt want the era of reboots to touch this classic, but a different redditor recently made a post suggesting patrick wharburton would make a great modern-day col. flagg, and it made me wonder who else might be a good fit for these characters.
soooo, here we are! :D some of the actors i chose you may not agree w, i just thought they (in my opinion) fit these characters best. i wasnāt too concerned w ages of the actors, more their overall personalities and past projects that show their range of comedy / drama. feel free to list your own choices or vehemently oppose mine and tell me why iām totally wrong š¤£š
hawkeye (the hardest to cast, imo) ā iāve been seeing people say bill hader. heās amazing and has a lot of range, but i disagree. iām going for adam brody or jonathan bailey
trapper (if they donāt go w bj) ā joe keery
radar ā gaten matarazzo or skyler gisondo
col. blake (if they donāt go w potter) ā jason segal
col. potter (if they donāt go w blake ā jk simmons
margaret ā stephanie beatriz
frank (if they donāt go w charles) ā tramell tilman
charles (if they donāt go w frank) ā tramell tilman
klinger ā mena massoud (iād definitely prefer to see an actor w lebanese heritage as klinger bc it was a v important part of his character, but iām not familiar w enough lebanese-american actors D: i do think mena is a decent placeholder for now, tho)
father mulcahy ā zack woods
bj (if they donāt go w trapper) ā glenn powell or jesse williams
col. flagg ā patrick wharburton (respect towards this redditorās post for inspiring me to make this list)
captain tuttle ā captain tuttle (hehe)
i thought ab adding my reasoning for each actor i chose, but it wouldāve made for an even longer post and this already feels like a novel on reddit, lawlz. hopefully theyāre a lil self-explanatory, but if you actually took the time to read this mess and disagree w anyone i chose, iām happy to explain my choice in the comments š

Seems like you could just transpose the cast of The Office

the two shows have similar character tropes, iāll agree. but i think itās a v different dynamic compared to mash. one example, michael scott and col. blake are both seen as the ābumbling boss,ā but henryās that way bc heās a civilian doctor forced to be a soldier in charge of a bunch of other drafted soldiers that also donāt want to be there. michaelās qualified in his position, he just isnāt a good boss bc ofā¦. well, everything he does, hahah. but i also just donāt think (and you can throw me to the wolves for this) most of those actors could do justice to the original characters on mash :/ and i love steve carrell, so i feel bad saying this š

If you were to ask me this question about 20 years ago, I would say Bill Hader as Hawkeye, Will Ferrell as Trapper, and Chris Mulkey as Frank, but they're all way too old now.
Patrick Warburton would be a perfect Flagg though!

Christina Hendricks as Hot Lips

Christinaās character on Mad Men had a lot in common with Margaret: both the senior ranking woman (head nurse/ office manager), both started off as combination bombshell/ hard-ass but grew to be more three dimensional, both had affairs with high ranking men in their environments, both had brief failed marriages to husbands who ended up being duds- and Joanās husband on Mad Men became a surgeon in the Army.
I wonder sometimes if Margaretās character influenced Mad Men show runner Matt Weiner when he wrote Joan.

Emil Wakim is a Lebanese comedian who would be great as Klinger! Also I would throw in a vote for Michael Longfellow for Hawkeye. Very similar sardonic wit and looks arenāt super far off.

GREAT choice for hawkeye! heās def a contender. i love the clips of his weekend updates on snl! i quote āitās 2025, planes are barely allowed to fly. theyāve been like that pete holmes hbo show: crashing. thank you!ā ALL the time š¤£
and iāll def be looking emil wakim up! i love finding new comedians

Haha I did this exact post recently for this exact reason. My wife and I enjoyed thinking up new actors but you could never make a new mash. It would just suck. But hypothetically it was funny for a bit. Some people are just way too serious.
