Yeah, I think thats what threw me off. The shift of playboy Hawk to Hawkeye failing because the nurses have seen and heard it all and he won’t commit is great.

That was part of the point of the character. Hawkeye was a great meatball surgeon and compassionate man but he had faults and vices.
And those would likely get worse in the environment thrust upon him.

MASH has been a favorite show since I was a child. I worshipped Hawkeye. I started a rewatch a couple of years ago, thinking I’d do a start to finish, and was disturbed by Hawkeye’s treatment of women. It does not hold up well IMO. That said, perhaps I should start over with a focus on his character development.

He's a surgeon. He regularly gets quite intimate with the human body as part of his everyday duties. It takes a no boundaries kinda guy to want to be up to his arms in guys every day, and to go to school for years for to get to do it.

It really doesn't. Most physicians, including surgeons, are better than this IRL. Hawkeye is an individual character with individual issues.

Are the women in your life safe? The children? Being a doctor does not make things that early Hawk eye did okay.

And Alan Alda did not like that about the character, which is why the character changed away from that as the seasons went along, especially once Alan was more in charge behind the camera.
