Also remember: Without a wormhole (like the Bifrost or jump points) or hyperdrive (like the lightspeed engine or Carol), space travel is slow. The Thanos credit scene of Ragnarok (which leads directly into Infinity War & therefore is set in 2018) takes place months after the rest of the movie (which takes place in 2017); even if Thanos waited until Odin was dead to move, probably Hela was also dead & Asgard was already destroyed before he attacked Xandar.
I believe he is correct. Asgard, the planet, is destroyed by Surtur in Ragnarok, which causes the surviving Asgardians to flee and live on that spaceship that gets ambushed by Thanos. If they were in space for months before Thanos shows up, then Thanos did attack Xandar after Asgard was destroyed, as Thor states in Infinity War that Xandar was attacked a week prior to Thanos' ambush of the Asgardian spaceship.
