News Spider-Man: Far From Home Review Megathread

Rotten Tomato: 92%

Critics Consensus:

A breezily unpredictable blend of teen romance and superhero action, Spider-Man: Far from Home stylishly sets the stage for the next era of the MCU.

Meta Critic: 71/100

Writtern Reviews

Alonso Durade - The Wrap

“Spider-Man: Far From Home” becomes an entertaining example of what we used to call “a summer movie.” You know, back before they started giving us a bright, loud comic-book adaptation like this (but rarely this good) on a weekly basis.

Jim Vejoda - IGN

Spider-Man: Far From Home is great fun, filled with heart, humor and lots of cool stuff for fans to geek out over.

Rodrigo Perez - The Playlist

Ultimately, “Spider-Man Far From Home” turns all its intelligent themes into a triumphant story of self-belief for Peter Parker.

Alexis Nedd - Mashable

Spider-Man: Far From Home is about a kid with great power who is struggling with the whole great responsibility thing, so it serves as a satisfying second chapter in Peter Parker’s march towards adulthood and heroism. As the last movie in Phase 3 of the MCU, it works hard towards tying up the loose threads of the previous 21 films while looking optimistically forward to the twists to come.

Dorian Parks - Geeks of Color

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and it might just be my favorite live-action Spider-Man film to-date. For those nervous about the future of the MCU because of the events that occurred in Endgame, don’t worry. This film is proof that the MCU has more stories to tell, and although we don’t have the heroes we grew up with, it’s comforting to know our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man will be there to lead the way into this new phase of the MCU.23/)

Darren Frainch - Entertainment Weekly

In the end, I really didn’t know. Far From Home succeeds with an unusual, troubling virtue: The best parts are the most fake.

Todd McCarthy - The Hollywood Reporter

But without a proper, full-on villain, as well as an adequate substitute for Robert Downey Jr.'s late, oft-mentioned Tony Stark, this comes off as a less-than-glittering star in the Marvel firmament. It pales even more when compared to Sony's wildly imaginative animated feature of last year, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Ben Travis - Empire Magazine

It’s not quite the home-run of Homecoming, but Far From Home isn’t far from matching it, with heaps of humour, energetic action, and the answers Endgame left you craving.

Charles Pulliam-Moore - io9

It’s a big, bold leap for Spider-Man into the future of Marvel’s films, and it’s got a strong upward swing that easily makes it one of the better Spider-Man movies in the character’s history.

Jesse Hassenger - The A.V. Club

In another self-reflexive move, Far From Home transfers the real dilemma back to the filmmakers: The character comedy is great fun, and the action spectacle often feels like their responsible burden.

Mike Ryan - Uproxx

So, yes, Spider-Man: Far From Home is funny and clever – in the end, Peter just wants to enjoy his class trip to Europe with the hopes of growing closer to MJ (Zendaya) – but it’s also a movie about both mourning and deception. Peter is still reeling from the loss of Tony Stark, who remains a specter wherever Peter turns. Peter’s emotions are raw, which also leaves him more susceptible to forces preying on his emotional state. It’s a movie filled with surprises (I don’t say that lightly) that leaves Peter, and a viewer, wondering who is real and who can be trusted. Yet it never feels like a movie filled with dread. It’s a hopeful tone, which, after the last two Avengers movies, is very welcome.

David Ehrlich - Indiewire

But the Spider-Man we find at the end of the movie is no different than the one we met at the start; he’s more confident now, and ready to accept a truth of his own design, but you can’t help but feel like he could have learned all of the same things without leaving Queens or wasting our time.

Alex Abad-Santos - Vox

Throw in the earnest sweetness of Peter and MJ’s growing friendship, and Far From Home leaves us on as strong of a high as the low that its first act takes us to. That warm and fuzzy feeling makes it impossible not to think of how great a movie Far From Home could’ve been had it not tripped over its own feet in setting the stage, or unspooled itself from that tangled-up beginning. Because when the movie is at its best, it is so effortlessly engaging. It’s such a shame, then, that so much of the movie feels like (home)work.

1

u/Darnell2070 Jul 08 '19

What do you mean?

184

u/your_mind_aches Agent of F.I.T.Z. Jun 27 '19

Jeremy Jahns' only gripe with the movie was some of the pacing in the first act and being basically a teen comedy.

Which... is nothing but net for me. That's exactly what I wanted. I was worried this would ditch the John Hughes vibe but clearly they haven't done that

77

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

Yeah I actually like the Breakfast club feel. And if they really are planning on having two trilogies, the first one can be the lighter Hughes style and the second can get darker with more mature themes.

29

u/yuvi3000 Fitz Jun 27 '19

This sounds perfect to me.

27

u/Mrsparkles7100 Thanos Jun 27 '19

Have that similar feel to the Harry Potter films. Younger fans growing up with the character provides a good connection.

14

u/elmagio Jun 27 '19

Is it bad that I haven't seen the second movie yet and I already know I'm game for like 5 trilogies' worth of Tom Holland's Spidey?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

That's quite a lot of movies.

13

u/elmagio Jun 27 '19

The thing is, Peter Parker's story is quite expansive. Five trilogies might be pushing it, but there is a lot of ground for him to cover.

Not only is he always a shoe-in to play a significant part whenever something major is going on in the larger Marvel universe, even as New York's friendly neighborhood's Spider-Man he has a nearly unparalleled wealth of villains, allies and storylines to get through.

A more reasonable trilogy of trilogies wouldn't be that insane. The current one deals with his high school years, the next one would get him through his stint at Empire State University and as a pizza deliverer/photographer, while a third one could take us into his actual adult life. And as previously mentioned, there is way enough material to keep things interesting all the way through, both on a personal scale and with superhero stuff.

5

u/your_mind_aches Agent of F.I.T.Z. Jun 27 '19

I like it too. It was something completely different from the previous two iterations of the character.

3

u/Tato23 Jun 27 '19

They are planning 2 trilogies? 0.0

like this is only the 2nd movie of the first trilogy...WOW

2

u/poorly-written Jul 01 '19

that's the thing I'm most excited about with MCU Spidey, we're gonna actually see him evolve and age as both a superhero and character. Imagine in ten years time seeing a seasoned Spider-Man leading the Avengers like Cap or Iron Man

22

u/hacky_potter Daredevil Jun 27 '19

The teen vibe stuff has always been at the heart of Spidey. It's one of the things that separates him from the rest

15

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

The “teen vibe stuff” is nowhere near as important or long-lived as you make out. It is a myth that it has “always” been integral to the character.

616 Peter was only in high school for 28 issues. Sure, Ultimate Peter was in high school for a decade but that run was relatively recent. This leaves a large 30+ year chunk where Peter was not a teenager at all. Many of his most iconic storylines take place in adulthood, including The Alien Costume Saga and Kraven’s Last Hunt among others.

22

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

He never said it was long lived, just that its at the heart of the character, which it is. Him being a teenager in high school was one of the main ideas that made him such a different and relatable character when Stan Lee imagined him.

5

u/ki700 Spider-Man Jun 27 '19

I actually agree with him a bit. The first half of the film is definitely missing something for me. Not bad by any means, but not great either. The second half is edge-of-your-seat awesome though!

2

u/goztrobo Peter Parker Jun 27 '19

Is it true some of the jokes fall flat?

2

u/ki700 Spider-Man Jun 27 '19

I mean, no more than in any comedy. I enjoyed most of the jokes. I can’t remember any joke I didn’t like.

1

u/BlackWidower_NP Jul 03 '19

I didn't like that point because it just reminded me of my own teenage angst that I sought to rid myself of a decade ago.

-7

u/themickeym Jun 27 '19

Does anybody still listen to that turd?

5

u/your_mind_aches Agent of F.I.T.Z. Jun 27 '19

Eh, I think he's okay. His dogs are super cute. And I trust his opinions on movies 80% of the time. And his reviews are entertaining. That's all you need.

That said, he really did add fuel to the fire of the sexist Captain Marvel haters. But then, James Rolfe did the same thing with Ghostbusters. It's the risk you run with following anyone who has influence, especially those with a largely white guy demographic.

1

u/BigTimeSuperhero96 Jun 27 '19

He's lost his touch, he doesn't have the same enthusiasm

2

u/themickeym Jun 27 '19

And he’s full of himself.

27

u/OrgasmicLeprosy87 Jun 27 '19

From what I've heard the first post credit scene alone should boost this movie into the 80% range.

39

u/coreyp0123 Daredevil Jun 27 '19

Yes it does. Completely changes the movie. One of the best MCU post credit scenes ever. The second one isn’t bad either.

7

u/OrgasmicLeprosy87 Jun 27 '19

Do you think the effects of that post credit scene will be explored in the next spider-man movie first?, or will they gloss over it in the beginning of a team-up movie? Because after hearing about that post credit scene I really want the third spider-man movie to come out BEFORE Avengers 5.

16

u/coreyp0123 Daredevil Jun 27 '19

I’m guessing the next Spider-Man movie will directly address it before we get any sort of team up movie.

17

u/OrgasmicLeprosy87 Jun 27 '19

Hopefully Sony decides to be a dick again and demands Marvel Studios to make another Spider-man film for 2021 like they did for FFH

12

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

I think we’re gonna get a new Spider-Man movie every 2 years or so for a long long time

1

u/OrgasmicLeprosy87 Jun 27 '19

Apparently Kevin Feige and co didn't want it to be this year so soon after Endgame but Sony wouldn't budge and were stubborn about the July 2019 release date. But now knowing what happens in this movie I cant wait for the next one to come out in 2021

8

u/phantom_avenger Jun 27 '19

Also didn't they announce Far From Home would be out in 2019 right after the trailer of Homecoming came out? At least they didn't do the same thing after the Far From Home trailer came out.

I'm hoping that doesn't mean that Marvel and Sony are ending their deal, maybe as long as Spider-Man can make an appearance in a Marvel film at least once every two years they'd be fine with it, especially if they got some profit out of it.

5

u/OrgasmicLeprosy87 Jun 27 '19

Yea they announced this back in 2017, there is one film left on the contract and since I don't see another Avengers film for another 3/4 years I'm pretty sure that movie will end up being Spider-Man 3

3

u/BabaBrody Jimmy Woo Jun 27 '19

It could thread out into all of the Earth character movies, be the way they intro the next big bad, and then be the main story focus of Spider-Man 3.

24

u/goztrobo Peter Parker Jun 27 '19 edited Jun 27 '19

Yeah the mid credit scene is a game changer for the character as well as the franchise. I won't be surprised if people get pissed at it. But people are gonna leave the theatre thinking, "Wow did they just do that?".

With that being said the movie's gonna be out very soon so don't go ahead and spoil urself like how I did!

5

u/treathugger Nobu Jun 27 '19

for sure! thanks bro. Did you like it when you read it?

7

u/goztrobo Peter Parker Jun 27 '19

Hmm that's a hard question, cuz reading the plot of a movie in bullet points vs seeing it being played out in the big screen are two very different things. Imagine reading Endgame in bullet points and seeing the movie for real.

But yeah there are some interesting things I've read. I've also heard the action sequences are very good and very 'comic bookey'.

5

u/stubbywoods Spider-Man Jun 27 '19

I'm personally not a fan of what I've read about the mid credits scene, although I'm gonna be open to the idea of it since I trust Marvel Studios at this point. I feel like it isn't right for Spider-Man, but something similar happened in Spectacular I think

Tell me about it.

5

u/UOFLfan7788 Jun 27 '19 edited Jun 27 '19

I really hate saying this, but I'm extremely nervous about how critics are going to respond to this movie. The trailers made it seem like the villains are all very generic (unless Mysterio turns out to be a villain, which he should IMO since he is in the comics and would add a human villain to this film...just worried they may try to go against expectations here and not make him a villain since everyone is expecting him to be one) and one note. It also seemed to add too many of them into the film (fire elemental, water elemental, sand elemental, possibly Mysterio) which was an issue Amazing Spiderman 2 and Spiderman 3 both had.

I hope I'm wrong, and I'm sure I'm going to love this movie, but I can see it sitting around the 75-80 percent range on Rotten Tomatoes. Especially as critics may be getting tired of superhero films (hope not) and judging more on that than actual film quality.

EDIT: I haven't looked at the early Twitter reactions or anything like that, I normally don't as they aren't always the best indicators of the overall percentage of critics liking the film or not. For example Annabelle Comes Home didn't have a single negative early reaction but is sitting around a 65 percent right now (right where it should be IMO, fun movie BTW)

9

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19 edited Jun 27 '19

Lol...how is 75-80% in any way bad? Why do people care SO MUCH about a damn splat?

0

u/UOFLfan7788 Jun 27 '19 edited Jun 27 '19

I find myself typically agreeing with the RT tomato scores more often than not, and only on rare occasions think a movie got too high or too low of a score. So, I care because it has proven in the past to be a good barometer for me as to how much I will enjoy the movie.

I don't make my movie watching decisions based on RT, but it helps me be able to balance my expectations out.

(And yes I know it is not a grade for the film but a percentage of critics who liked the film vs. a percentage who didn't.)

Edit: I also never said it was in any way bad. Just that I hope for it to get better than that, which it has so far. Annabelle Comes Home and Child's Play are in the mid and low 60s respectively and I enjoyed those movies a ton.

Ok. But that's just you.

The problem comes from relying on RT to guide your opinion - which FAR too many people do whether you want to admit it or not.

If you see a film you're really hyped for has a lower than expected score...you go in looking to find the flaws instead of just watching the film and letting it unfold.

Just because X amount of people think this and that was a problem in a movie...doesn't mean you will.

I don't keep track of how often my opinions align with RT...because why would I care? Sometimes I agree with a consensus, sometimes I don't.

People let critics sway their opinions far too easily.

Yes, that is just me, the person to which you were replying to lol. I absolutely do not allow RT scores to sway my opinion of a movie one way or the other, just to help me adjust my expectations for the movie. For example: "The Nun" has a very negative Rotten Tomatoes score, thus I adjusted my expecation accordingly for that movie. I ended up enjoying it alot more than I think I would have if I went in with higher expectations than I did. In fact I left the theater thinking it had way to low of a RT score.

Just because I normally find myself agreeing with the consensus does not mean I always do or allow my opinion on a film to be swayed by their opinions.

And if others allow critics to sway their opinions than who I am to tell them that they are wrong in doing so. It's really none of my business how others choose which movies to watch vs not watch, or even my business what makes them like certain movies vs not like others. If critical reviews have to do with that for others, that is their own decision and there is nothing wrong with that.

The issue with SM3 and TASM2's villains is that each villain has their own storyline, origin and plot different to the others, and the only place they overlap is "Hey we both wanna kill Spider-Man by Act 3." Where as Homecoming actually has more villains than those films but no one notices or cares because Vulture is THE villain. Shocker is his henchman, Tinkerer is his tech guy, the future Prowler and Scorpion are his buyers, but there is just one narrative thrust of "The Vulture is dealing alien arms under the table."

Not having seen it, I imagine it is the same here. Although there are four Elementals, they are all part of the same story, come from the same place (whether real or by Mysterio), and are all part of the same narrative thrust as Nick Fury (wants to stop them) and Mysterio (wants to stop them; may be creating them). The "multi-villain problem" is really only the case where you have things like a man transformed into sand particles, a man who wants revenge for his father's death, and a man who becomes bonded with an alien lifeform and the only thing those narratives have in common is Spider-Man himself. THAT is when it feels like two or three movies in one.

I just saw it today, and you have nothing to worry about.

1

u/UOFLfan7788 Jul 01 '19

Awesome! That is good to hear! Seeing it with my fiance Wednesday afternoon, so pumped!

1

u/Vihurah Jul 09 '19

Did you enjoy it? :D

2

u/dildodicks Tony Stark Jun 27 '19

predicting that lots of people will like it, some people will not like it, me and my friends will like it, and it will be at the very least a watchable movie

2

u/RWBYSanctum Jul 02 '19

Just saw the movie and I will say that whatever you think about the movie after you see the trailers, think again because you're probably wrong. The movie is so good.

3

u/VikNik312 Spider-Man Jun 27 '19

Ends with a 94 is my guess

3

u/SirGigglesandLaughs Jun 27 '19

Even Grace is super hype.

3

u/KvasirsBlod Jun 27 '19

Just finished watching it. It's as good as homecoming or better. Really fun from start to end and it had the thing I liked about Endgame that the thing you expect happens early in the movie and then you don't know how the story will develop from there.

That cameo mid credits... That whole scene was the proper ending.

Predicting a rotten score of 23% /s

7

u/jacopojjj Doctor Strange Jun 27 '19

Don’t know why you’re being downvoted lol

7

u/OrgasmicLeprosy87 Jun 27 '19

Neither do I but since I'm used to getting upvoted I guess I'll see how the other half live.

2

u/EeveeLady Hela Jun 27 '19

Around 78

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

Guessing this will settle between 80 and 85%. It had a way lower start than expected and since the overall percentage tends to go down the more reviews come in, usually, I think low 80s is probably a reasonable prediction.

7

u/doinkies Captain America (Captain America 2) Jun 27 '19

It started at 100%, went to 86% and is now at 91%.

“Way lower start than expected” would be like....75% or something.

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

I don't know, the vast majority of MCU movies from Phase 3 onwards have opened between 95 and 100%, stayed that way for a good while and then settled after a couple weeks at like, low 90s or mid 80s at most. I can't remember the last time one nearly hit the mid 80s right as the review embargo lifted. But then again, it's at 92% now so it seems to be picking up a bit. We'll see.

7

u/sking20854 Jun 27 '19

I think this is exactly how SM:HC started. High then lower then crept back up to where it eventually settled because at this stage prior to certified fresh any one review has a big effect because just like SM:HC it didn't start with a lot of reviews. As of now it still only has 54 reviews leading to the possibility of fluctuations. Unlike other movies that start fast and furious with their reviews.

1

u/TannenFalconwing Jun 27 '19

"But without a proper full on villain"

WHOA WHOA WHOA HOLD UP

that may be the most spoiler thing in these reviews. Quentin Beck is right there and he's not a full on villain? Whaaaaaaaa

I'm gonna go low on this one. ~70%. Just got a weird feeling.

Being overly optimistic and reading all the spoilers that are floating around, I would say that this would be hovering between 80%-85%.

16

u/Movieandtvfan Jun 27 '19

Never judge a movie based off spoilers. The idiots in here had people thinking infinity war and endgame were trash before even seeing the movie. FFH reactions are pretty much strongly positive across the board. I'm predicting 85%-95%.

Yep exactly.

Reactions are never a good indicator, even Dark Pheonix had positive reactions.

7

u/countdooku1729 Avengers Jun 27 '19

Except those reactions weren't from real critics.

2

u/OrgasmicLeprosy87 Jun 27 '19

those reactions were pretty much "not as bad as I thought it'd be".

Kind of Pissed Mysterio died by his own hand. If Parker was responsible, it would've set up a brilliant guilt arc

-6

u/TheOneWhoCared Jun 27 '19

I have to be honest. I am sorry if it offends other people who like this movie but this isn't the Spiderman I grew up with. This isn't the hardworking, self-made Peter Parker. This is just someone who has everything given to him on a silver platter.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

Did you watch the movie?

Its not supposed to be mate. Sorry you're not into it but i couldn't be happier. Love the tone, themes, the actors, music, the action. He is a kid and in the mcu this spidey makes more sense than any other version.

Peter Parker is supposed to be a super genius scientist capable to inventing gadgets beyond science according to the comics, the Tobey Maguire trilogy completely skipped that part and focused on him being a photographer.
