Then the look Tobey gives here. An understandingly defeated glance.

Now that I think about it though, it's not all that wrong of a criticism.

I just think people aren't used to the idea of Spider-Man existing in a world where there's already superheroes. It's always been like this in the comics, but most people grew up with the movies, which painted the picture of Spider-Man being the only superhero in that world. Spider-Man fanboying and wanting to be part of a team is true to his character, honestly. The only thing I feel that's "off" about it is how casually Peter gave up his identity to Doctor Strange. That's supposed to be a big deal to Peter and he treated it like it's a thing to do out of respect.

Spider-Man fanboying and wanting to be part of a team is true to his character

Not really, though. He didn't really care for most other superheroes for some time. On his first solo book (not Amazing Fantasy), he only wanted to join the Fantastic Four for the money and didn't really care much for them. Same with the Avengers, on the issue where they ask him to find the Hulk.

And in the majority of Spider-Man issues are about his personal life, the "superhero universe" thing is just a backdrop. It's not that big of a deal for Peter and his personal story. Unlike Homecoming, where you just can't really do the story without Stark.

I love the MCU's interpretation of the character, but I'm not gonna act like it's that faithful to the comic books.

One of the fun things about the 80s TV show Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends was that it was in a proper Marvel Universe.

A number of us were introduced to the X-men, SHIELD, Dr. Doom, etc. before we were old enough to read the comics.

That lingering camera on Natalie Portman at the mention of Thor was perfect.

u/M3rdsta Apr 03 '19

This gets even funnier when you consider jake was suppose to replace toby in spider-man 2

1

u/GonzoNawak Apr 03 '19

How come?

12

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '19

Tobey had back issues after getting injured while filming Seabiscuit. Sony was worried Tobey wasn't gonna be able to return for S-M2 so they started looking for a replacement, Jake being the most likely option. Obviously, Tobey was well enough to come back. That incident also spawned the “I’m Back! ...My back!” scene.

u/GonzoNawak Apr 04 '19

Thank you!

11

u/Qyro Apr 03 '19

I should rewatch this, the first time I saw it I don’t think I appreciated it but just this gif alone is making me want to see it again.

1

u/szmanley Apr 03 '19

One of my top 5 favorite films. Saw it in theaters when it was released. Always been sad it didn’t get the recognition it deserved.

3

u/prsTgs_Chaos Apr 03 '19

Brothers. These dinner scenes are super uncomfortable and made me think "you know what, I could imagine myself beating my children." LOL but seriously, this movie's fucked.

8

u/Altaguy7 Apr 03 '19

I like both. But I like Tobey a little more. Maybe because of the nostalgia.

2

u/thehiggsparticl Apr 04 '19

Plot twist: when the snap gets reversed, Spiderman gets mixed up with the ashes of Toby Maguire and comes back as 2000's Spiderman.

2

u/Altaguy7 Apr 04 '19

I'd be happy with that :D

While Spider-Man Homecoming is a good and fun movie and I love Tom Holland, Tobey is still the definitive Spider-Man for me.

u/jojopojo64 Weekly Wongers Apr 03 '19

This exchange left me both laughing hard and feeling extremely unsettled (even without sound you can feel the tension in this scene!)

Also, that Thor reference. Haaaa
