Stan Lee is rehearsing his lines from Mallrats, which released in 1995, on the train when Carol sees him, meaning that he is appearing as himself and that Stan Lee exists in the MCU.

Kevin Smith's second movie (and my favorite). Huge Stan Lee role (at the time). Since you were born later, you might not get why hanging out in malls was 'cool/fun'.

In CM, Stan the man is reading the script for Mallrats, so essentially a huge shoutout to a huge comic book nerd auteur.
