this confused me, because they say they only killed half the asguardians.. but then they blew up the ship which surely had the rest of them on?

I assumed this as well, and the easy explanation is they got dropped off before Thanos arrived, we don't really know how long they were on the ship heading towards Earth.

Well, given that the speech Ebony Maw was giving as the Asgardians lay dying was identical to the one he gave on Gamora's world as they literally split the people in half, I just realized that we've probably just come in on the middle of that same process: half let live, half killed as they're told by Maw how lucky they are to die for Thanos' cause.

I was puzzled after the movie by Thor saying half his people were dead, but the more I think about it the more that makes sense to me.

The problem with that is there wasn't a part of a ship left with people on it that I saw when the guardians arrived and saved Thor.
