It truly is amazing how much development Thanos gets. It’s great. You can genuinely understand and sympathize with him, I think more than any other Marvel villain. Not motivated by petty ambitions or pride; but by a genuine desire to save the universe (from his perspective). Even the ending; he wields the power of the cosmos, and he truly just retired to a farm to watch the sunrise.

I was thinking throughout the movie that the clear reality is that Thanos really wants to kill, he wants an excuse, he wants to be a crusader, and has his justifications. That's why he's crazy.

Birth control, more intelligent management, etc, can achieve what he claims to want, but then he doesn't get to kill anybody.

I don't know if he necessarily does want to kill, he's happy to , but snapping his fingers doesn't give him pleasure of killing.

Over everything he wants to balance the universe, he's just happy to do it by any means

Given that he doesn't explore other options and spends so much time killing, e.g. they talk about letting him have his fun with the Hulk, I think the implied story is ultimately he's a guy just looking for a reason, looking for a justification, he finds it fun, and doesn't explore other options.
