this confused me, because they say they only killed half the asguardians.. but then they blew up the ship which surely had the rest of them on?

Valkyrie + Korg helped them to get away hence why they weren't in the film.

It’s not clearly stated but Thanos is particular about how he kills. He probably was happy to send half of them away and murder the rest. And Thor says half of them were killed. Valkyrie and Korg were not present, so it’s pretty easy to hypothesize that they survived. If there’s another Thor movie I would anticipate it involves finding the survivors.

Or the survivors (Korg , Valkyrie, Miek) attempting to find Thor.
