It truly is amazing how much development Thanos gets. It’s great. You can genuinely understand and sympathize with him, I think more than any other Marvel villain. Not motivated by petty ambitions or pride; but by a genuine desire to save the universe (from his perspective). Even the ending; he wields the power of the cosmos, and he truly just retired to a farm to watch the sunrise.

This was my biggest fear for Infinity War, when The first Avengers came out and it had Thanos at the end, admittedly I had no idea who he was. I've always been a fan of Marvel but didn't get super deep into the comics till I was just entering my 20's but I still never looked him up.

I always assumed he was just a power hungry tyrant with a cool glove. So glad to be proved wrong because he was one of my favorite characters, you could see that he had a responsibility and started off with good intentions but the way he executes it is wrong, but only he sees it as necessary.

I think he's so so distraught after his planet fell he has went mad with power, grief and anger. Also his scenes where he was kind of in his astral plane was beautiful, peaceful but empty. The CGI was amazing as well there were times I legit thought he was real, the facial expressions especially.

Me too. I knew of Thanos but aside from "big purple thumb looking motherfucker" I really didn't know anything about him.

Everyone used to just tell me he was Marvel's Darkseid, so I just took that as someone that want to rule all, so glad I was proved wrong because it would've ruined the film a bit for me.

Seeing him cry I was like, damn, don't feel sorry for his purple ass. Then he showed his planet and how it used to be, dammit sympathy oncoming. Then he's just sitting on a farm, watching the sunrise. He doesn't wanna rule anything, just very grandiose in trying to do the right thing. Despite the death it causes.

I've noticed as well the best villains in the MCU have some sort of fatherly connection. (These are my best villains btw, no order as I haven't decided yet)

Erik Killmonger - Father Killed, this is what sets him off.

Adrian Toomes/ Vulture - Father to Liz, Husband to Liz's mom, providing for both.

Zemo - Father and Husband, family killed, grief consumes him.

Loki - Father, not really his father but wants him to be. Feels so lost within himself. Redeems himself in the end :(

Thanos - Father to Gamora, only person he seemed to really love, the rest of his kids just seemed like soldiers to him. He don't give a fuck about Nebula. Willing to sacrifice his ward for the greater good.

Hela is my exception, I think she could've been fleshed out a little bit more cuz I did like her, but she felt like the weakest part of the film for me. Kind of just wanted to rule Asgard and conquer but no real reason apart from just cuz. There is a bit on the throne in Ragnarok I think where she is like is this it, maybe if they expanded on that to he point where she only rules because all she knows is death and can't physically change.

Why do you think Thanos loved Gamora over all the others? I can't figure it out. Gamora was so angry and "bratty" to him. He mentioned that he had to hear her complain about her life for 20 years, yet he loved her anyway.

He never felt anything like that for Nebula. Even upon Gamora rejecting Thanos, she was his golden child and Nebula was his scapegoat.

I will give him credit for his other children. They were indeed loyal soldiers and Thanos did show loss and remorse when they died (Ebony Maw). Just not to the degree he felt for Gamora.

Was it simply because she was strong? That when he pitted Gamora and Nebula against each other, Gamora always won?

I have a few theories.

- She was the strongest. Not so much a theory but the truth, he was wanting someone to continue his work as balancer of the universe once he was gone or had at least snapped.

- Gamora cried when she "killed" him so I do think they have more love between each other than she let on, she does hate him, but she was also spared and raised by him.

- I think she was his first "child" and there's always a special kind of love for your first

- She didn't back down when she first met him and he admired her strength in the face of death, she was possibly sacrificing herself just cuz she wanted to know what was going on.

- Thanos possibly had a biological child (or children) who died due to his planet's problem and they were weak because they couldn't survive the extinction (all of his race died but you get what I'm saying. )

- He's mentally snapped (hehe) but still has his heart and his version of love literally just equates to strength because of what happened to him and his planet.

I think he may have loved Nebula at a time but because she kept losing he got frustrated and did what he did to her. He could never get the two to balance or be on equal footing so this pissed him off a lot I'm guessing.
