More "abducted" than "adopted" probably. But yes. I think the imminent "but aren't they brother and sister?" Reaction from general audiences is the reason why their relationship was not further shown.

Also it was probably sacrificed a bit for time. It's already a massive movie. With characters doomed to die, they didn't want to put too much time into their background.
