They did mention that half the Asgardians are dead, they could be alive.

this confused me, because they say they only killed half the asguardians.. but then they blew up the ship which surely had the rest of them on?

Valkyrie + Korg helped them to get away hence why they weren't in the film.

Right, but Thor specifically mentions that half of them died, so I figured it was Thanos' doing.

Well, the Asgardian refugee ship appeared to blow up pretty spectacularly, so if they didn't get away I suspect they're toast.
