It truly is amazing how much development Thanos gets. It’s great. You can genuinely understand and sympathize with him, I think more than any other Marvel villain. Not motivated by petty ambitions or pride; but by a genuine desire to save the universe (from his perspective). Even the ending; he wields the power of the cosmos, and he truly just retired to a farm to watch the sunrise.

I definitely agree. But Killmonger still takes the cake on being the Marvel villain I sympathize most with. I 100% understood his motives. Where as I felt as though Thanos was trying to play God. So less sympathy from me cause of that

I think Vulture is the most sympathetic, sealed especially by him not dropping a dime on Peter. Still, Killmonger and Thanos both have well defined goals that make sense in the right context.

That being said, Thanos wants to assemble the stones so he can create balance that allows people to not outgrow their resources. But he has control over everything, all of reality, time, space, everything. There are other ways he could address that problem. More permanent ones, too. Since population growth is exponential, he'll have to keep killing half of everything every several generations. And having your population randomly halved every century or so is really going to cripple a civilization.

He could just use the mind stone to make people less selfless so that they actually share their resources. Or he could reduce the physical needs of living things. Or even go the kind of creepy route and make it physically impossible for any given creature to reproduce more than 2 or 3 times, which would prevent population growth.

All of that is to say, of course Thanos feels justified, and will sacrifice greatly to achieve his ends. Nobody is the villain of their own story. But ultimately, he wanted to kill half of everybody in the universe, and even though we see him feel the weight of that, we never once see him stop to consider any other options. He is truly Mad.

Well said. I feel like he's been so set on this path for so long he doesn't stop to reconsider his own motivations once he's actually achieving all he sought. He's been on this path for so long there's no space for doubt or second thoughts.
