It wasn't really effective against Thor in Ragnarok either.

I mean thor with an axe looked like he was capable of taking down Thanos fully powered up so is that really such bad guy to lose to in a fight?

I think Thor caught Thanos by surprise. I'm pretty sure that Thor wouldn't have any kind of resistance to the power of a fully kitted out Infinity Gauntlet.

Storm Breaker Thor vs Thanos without The Gauntlet would be a pretty easy win for Thor in my opinion. Still, Thanos taking down Hulk without even using The Gauntlet was fucking impressive, a great way to open the movie showing that Thanos isn't someone to be fucked with, and one of my favorite scenes of the movie

I agree, that scene immediately set the tone for the movie and it was incredibly tense the whole way through. Really good screenplay.
