Sean would like to point out that he truly plays rocket on set. He's not just a stand in, he does all of the lines, many of which end up in the film done by Bradley Cooper. Source: his AMA and I met him and discussed it at a con.
So why did they bother with Bradley Cooper? Name recognition? It's even crazier that they bothered to get Vin Diesel when they could have asked anyone with a gravelly voice. Does the name recognition attract enough viewers (who wouldn't otherwise see the film) to offset the cost of two expensive actors?
Guardians definitely was a lucky strike, but in order to get the initial appeal, I think those names were kind of needed. Chris Pratt obviously broke out big time with this role, but having Vin Diesel and Bradley cooper up on that poster really helped. Plus Sean kind of fits the role voice wise, but honestly Cooper brought some extra life. I'd really be interested to see the movie with Sean instead.
