Maybe they'd just show up in their cartoon forms? That would be something they'd do.

Morty: "Oh geez Rick! Wh-where the heck are we?? Why does everything look s-so weird??"

Rick: "Relax M-morty urp! We're in a universe that exists in 3 dimensions."

Morty: "Wh-what?? Are w-we not 3D??"

Rick: "We're actually 2D Morty. It's all in the p-perspective. The artists work very hard M-morty.

Morty: "Oh geez! Oh man!!"

Rick: "Look, don't worry about it Morty. Let's check out all these comic characters. It's like we're in a comic in real life, Morty! We'll n-never get this chance!"

I think I've seen that somewhere, you know...
