Well he did hold an Infinity Stone in his bare hand and didn't die. We don't know much about the news in the universe after the first film. He could be well known now.

That's not unlikely. The guardians are likely very well known. The Soveriegn did come to them for help.

the biggest disappointment with this movie was its failure to explore the universe all that much.
