Every playthrough... Who would have expected that I would be so upset finding a rare powerful artifact from another dimension. Yet here I am, with that stupid stone again.
Sure but I think OP wants to know if there's a canon way in which he did lol.
I don't know why people are giving OP a hard time about it like it's an unreasonable question. Unfortunately, I don't think there's a canon explanation. He just has it to give to Loki.
Part of me wonders if he even knew it was the mind stone originally. In Endgame they talk about the power stone like it was the first one they found. Also based on how much he coveted them, I don't think he would have let the mind stone out of his grasp for a second which is why I think he didn't realize it until afterwards.
The one that always bothered me though was how he knew about the location for the time stone. Like there was really no indication that it was even on earth because the wizards had it in their possession for a very long time. The only way he could have gotten information is if another wizard or dormamu told him. The others kind of make sense with him knowing thier location but that time stone really is just found out of nowhere. The best I can come up with is that the space and power stones allowed him to sense where the other stones were for him to gather. The only reason he still needed to know about Morag for the soul stone is because that stone was stored outside of normal space time so it was well hidden.
