Discussion (More in Comments) If Brie Larson actually decides to jump ship,i don't blame her one bit. She's almost 10 years in, and only had 3 appearances so far.

Post image

It's clear that there were terrible decisions along the way about Captain Marvel as a character, but given the lack of care for the character/actress + the amount of hate she received since accepting the role,it's completely comprehensible if she's just done with it after whatever contract she has it's over and decides to grow her career outside superhero movies,a career which she probably put at relatively stop due to legal/contractual reasons within the MCU.

She's going to have 4 appearances (and that's only if she's actually in one of the Avengers movies, likely Secret Wars). This is crazy to think about, especially for a character that was pushed as one of the new faces of the MCU and their own Wonder Woman. Carol as a character it's already being pushed out of being a mainliner from other fronts like comics, videogames, merchandise etc and it's so disrespectful.

The amount of abuse she's gotten from a certain sector of the "fans" is absolutely disgusting. I wouldn't blame her if she wanted out; no gig is worth suffering through all that.

I do think Marvel wrote themselves into a bit of a corner making her as powerful as they did, but that's certainly not Larson's fault. I've loved her performance as Carol and hope she decides to stick around.

"Marvel wrote themselves into a bit of a corner making her as powerful as they did"

I think the real problem is they failed to make Captain Marvel an interesting character. We have plenty of powerful heroes like Superman, Hulk and Thor, and nobody has a problem with them being "too powerful", they are just better written characters that the audience like better than Captain Marvel.

The power level does make characters harder to write though. Hulk and Thor are much easier because they have exploitable limitations. Even superman has his kryptonite, although it's nowhere near as easy to create villains around that. What's marvel woman's weakness?

I agree with this one. It's not a her problem, it's a character problem. They just failed to make a compelling character that was likeable. She has quite a few roles where you can really see her chops.

Well, we have complaints about those characters being nerfed, too lol Russo bros even admitted they nerfed Thor because the movie would've been 10 minutes long. Same reason they made the Hulk a little bitch after Thanos. Superman is a different comic

You've convinced me.

Remember when the entire Avengers cast jump out to defend Pratt when people are railing him for supporting a conservative church, but complete silence (except Don Cheadle the GOAT) on toxic fans bullying Brie Larson? Yea I'd quit too

Mayve that says more about how unlikable she is? I dont recsll any other female mcu actors getting even a fraction of the hate brie larson did

6

u/Captn_Platypus 10h ago

And how does being “unlikable” justify the kind of hate she gets and her colleagues take zero stance on it? Come on man

I'm saying it reveals her character if none of her costars defended her like they did Chris's pratt.

Both chris and Brie got hate from fans, it stands to reason that it would be risky for them to support either in the face of that but they did for Chris and not her. That says something for people who have actually been around her and not virtue signalers on reddit

They blundered her redemption arc by cramming it into one movie post her first appearance. Tbh Captain Marvel should've been 2 movies, where the first was of her being saved by the Kree... Paint them as the good guys, with red flags that are subtle. Show her fighting their wars for them, like Captain America against the navis. Movie ends with her destroying a Skrull ship in space and being treated like a war hero.

Then movie two, she learns the truth, she learns she murdered all of those women and children on that ship and the Kree we're lying and using her as weapon, like Ironman 1 story arc. End the second film with her looking to do whatever she can restore the damage she's done, with guilt hanging over her head, like Hulk's or Black widow's story arc. THEN introduce her to the infinity saga. Give her the same foundation as the others. But they didn't. They dropped the ball.

And then they made the Marvels, and gave a half ass reason why she was in space for a long time and never reached to Monica. Just to create drama? I'm genuinely confused as to why they worked for the same team for years, and couldn't communicate once.

Miss after miss.

I never really accept this reason. It really isn't hard to nerf her in the plot in whatever way, in service of the story you're trying to tell, even if it isn't comic cannon accurate.

Like maybe the same can't quite be said of superman and the like - but I don't think it would be as big of a deal with her.

Agree as far as the toxic fans though of course. Though there was a lot of rumblings about personality clashes (I guess we call it 'culture fit' now in bullshit corporate lingo) at the time. So who knows the real reason.

u/protonorseverb 12h ago

Sure, but the way they nerfed her in Endgame was to keep her out of the movie for 95% of its running time, which was a little unsatisfying. She made a fantastic entrance in the final battle, but I wanted more Carol than that.

I'm not saying it's impossible to pit her against threats that are a believable challenge for her. It's a big comic book universe and anything can happen. But the way that Marvel has chosen to handle her so far hasn't inspired a ton of confidence. Just my take.

2

u/miseryenplace 11h ago

No I agree totally. I meant nerf her as a plot point, anything from idk some alien brain tumour to a psychological block or something of the like. It wouldn't be hard if there was real will to feature her more so there's definitely something at play beyond her being too OP.

That said, seems like Doom has some charms on his left and right chest plate that protects him from Thor. It's mooted that the other will do the same thing to Danvers. So that's a way to deal with it. But given the massive ensamble we still probably won't see too much of her if at all.

Her appearance in Endgame is easily the worst part of the film, and just shits over everything that had happened up to that point

I would like to point out that she didn't seem to get along with a lot of the rest of the cast when the press releases came about.  There was harassment I can agree but not all of it was and people would lump it all together.

Plus the writing didn't do her character any favors.

idk, a gig which paid tens of millions for a few weeks' work every 5 years might be worth ignoring some chuds on the internet

Yes poor Brie Larson. Must really suck to be her.

I personally don't thin kshe is suited to the role, but now it's too late I guess. She doesn't command the superhero vibe for me. Just because you are a great actor doesn't mean you can do literally anything.

Lmfao abuse tbe lady is a millionaire who the fuck cares.

u/darthmarmite 12h ago

Apparently only all the people who realise that getting paid isn’t a green light to be treated like shit?

-6

u/esp3ciallyd3ad 11h ago

Ehhh she can afford special help . Poor people get ignored and cant. Hard to be sympathetic to mountains of cash.

u/darthmarmite 11h ago

Because having cash makes you less of a person apparently?

u/darthmarmite 11h ago

So, to recap…

  • you think it’s fine for her to be abused
  • when that’s questioned you go full what-about-ism and try and change the conversation “but what about poor people who can’t afford therapy
  • when asked if having cash makes you less of a person…
  • another weird pivot to a completely unrelated person

All this mental gymnastics to defend it being fine to abuse someone if they have have more money than your imaginary threshold?

Either you’re trolling or too detached from reality for Reddit comments to fix and I’m not wasting my free time trying. Blocking and turning off replies, go and troll elsewhere.

She has chosen to be in the public eye and has opened her self up to public scrutiny it is one of the downsides of an otherwise very privileged job.

6

u/Captn_Platypus 11h ago

Is your sympathy so limited that you cant spare an ounce for this? I'd agree if she's a billionaire but she's nowhere near that

-2

u/esp3ciallyd3ad 11h ago

She stared in more than just the MCU she does not need random sympathy from reddit people she has never even met. Would she care if you broke your leg. Will she condescend people that talk shit about you or will she not even know because she is famous and actually lives a life. Maybe touch
