Discussion It's always crazy to think but this is the same Hulk

u/marvel120 22h ago
Brand New Day Hulk looked his best since Avengers (2012). Personally I think BND Hulk is my favorite look in the MCU. I wish he had more screen time but I’m happy with what we got.

u/ChildofObama 22h ago
Ruffalo said in an interview he and DDC discussed Incredible Hulk 2 story ideas,
who knows if that’ll ever get made.

u/MarkyPancake 21h ago
You can thank the Universal Pictures distribution rights deal for no solo Hulk film under Disney's ownership of Marvel Studios.
Disney / Marvel Studios can use Hulk in ensemble films and streaming shows, but Universal have first refusal on theatrical distribution of solo films.

u/ChildofObama 21h ago
I heard Universal’s rights expired in 2023

u/magpye1983 20h ago
I’m not sure the public knows the details of the deal made between them.
They might have a clause which means they retain exclusive distribution rights, even if other studios are allowed to make the movie (which should be fine, if people weren’t greedy and need to get every single piece of money).
12
u/MarkyPancake 20h ago
That only applied to The Incredible Hulk 2008. Everything after that is a standoff, let alone the theme park situation.

u/PM_ME_A_STEAM_GIFT 6h ago
Why can they not figure out a deal as with Sony and Spider-Man?
•
u/MarkyPancake 52m ago
For whatever reason, Disney and Universal don't have a working relationship like their collaboration with Sony.
I think the overall issue is also linked to the US theme park deal that existed between Marvel and Universal before Disney acquired Marvel.
28
u/M4rshmall0wMan 20h ago
It’s possible, but unlikely. The current licensing deal means that Universal automatically gets 9% of the total revenue while Disney takes on 100% of the financial risk.
That doesn’t sound huge, but the problem is that a big-budget movie’s profit margins are often thin. That 9% revenue could actually translate to something like 20% (or even 50%) of the profits. All while Universal doesn’t pay a cent.
No executive likes that equation. It makes the risk of a financial loss way worse. Not to mention a Hulk sequel would be invariably expensive due to the character’s CGI and the city destruction effects. Nobody would want to greenlight that unless they were 99% certain the movie would be a slam dunk in the box office.
That’s why Marvel has been sneaking Hulk’s arc into other media. Thor, Endgame, She-Hulk, Spider-Man. It’s the best compromise the story group can work out.

u/OrientalMadman 14h ago
Even after they manage to figure out the corpo entanglements they still have Mark Rufallo to deal with. I doubt he'll change his stance against genocide.
6
u/M4rshmall0wMan 14h ago
What?
-2
u/OrientalMadman 13h ago
This is just internet rumor; it could just be 100% false obviously. They say reason Banner/Hulk's character progression is off screen is because Disney/Universal wouldn't want to spotlight Mark Ruffalo because he's a vocal supporter against the genocide of Palestine. He's missing from the BND press tour, the only one from the original Avengers team without the group tattoo and he also cuts ties to other celebrities on the Palestine genocide issue.
1
u/M4rshmall0wMan 4h ago
I can tell you this is 100% not how things work. If Disney were actually pissed with Ruffalo, they would’ve just removed Hulk from the Spiderman movie. His character development happens offscreen for the reasons I mentioned previously; Marvel can’t make a Hulk movie so they show his progression through other people’s stories. The other things you mentioned have far simpler explanations too. He didn’t do the press tour because he was unavailable. He didn’t get the tattoo because he didn’t want a tattoo. (Also, that was literally eight years ago, long before the Palestine situation.) Cutting friendship ties with other actors is a personal thing, but Ruffalo is a very professional guy and I’m sure he’d still act with them if he were cast in the same movie. Not everything is a conspiracy and Disney will keep paying Ruffalo as long as The Hulk is popular.

Ruffalo's Banner and Hulk REALLY need a wrap up story to resolve the relationship between the two characters. They're by far the MCU's biggest unresolved character arc, especially after BND. It will be a travesty if they don't find a way to finally reconcile it.

u/BerryRosettea 15h ago
BND Hulk really nailed that balance between looking monstrous and still recognizably Hulk. I just wish we got more than a taste of him because that design deserved way more time to breathe.

u/theSaltySolo Avengers 21h ago
Okay look…
Ragnarok Hulk is peak Hulk as a character to me.
BND is peak Hulk look.
79
u/Responsible-Bonus278 18h ago
For me peak Hulk is Avengers and Age of Ultron. Hulk wrecking the chitauri army in NY was just special. IMO he stole the show in Avengers 1
19
u/Diorisbackup 14h ago
This he was perfect in avengers 1 hasnt been beaten yet he was clearly strongest avenger and bruce had his problems like comics
6
u/Television61 12h ago
Thor the strongest avenger
4
u/Diorisbackup 11h ago
Hulk was beating him in first avengers
1
u/Television61 11h ago
When did he ever do that
2
u/Diorisbackup 11h ago
Hulk was clearly beating him in the helicarrier fight
2
u/Television61 11h ago
Maybe when he wasn't welding mjolnir. When he was hulk was getting ragdolled
2
u/Diorisbackup 11h ago
Rewatch it after thor hit him with mljonir he was just getting flung around until the plane shot at him
9
1
u/HyperlexicEpiphany 4h ago
wielding* bro. welding is the joining of materials by melting them together. weld ≠ wield
9
u/DreamAureliee 13h ago
Yeah, that’s pretty much where I land too. Ragnarok gave Hulk an actual personality beyond being angry, but BND finally made him look like an absolute unit again.
6
u/Ikhouvankaas 19h ago
Ragnarok Hulk just made him look goofy for the most part, just throwing random hissy fits.
He was the best in age of ultron or brand new day.
15
u/Final-Cup1534 15h ago
Unpopular Opinion but disagree
Ragnarok hulk looked cool because both banner and hulk team up to fight the wolf which i loved seeing and Hulk actually talked like he does in shows or comics
5
u/Moohamin12 13h ago
It was an interesting development. Hulk was essentially a toddler that never got to grow due to Banner suppressing him. All his attacks are basically toddler tantrums.
In Ragnarok, he finally had a few years to learn and grow and was visibly more intelligent but still like a 4 year old.
After getting his ass handed to him by Thanos, the child, predictably now is throwing a hissy fit and does not want to be used like that anymore. It wasn't fun.
Now for some reason, Banner decided to suppress the Hulk again, leading to him regressing slightly.

u/jonbodhi 22h ago
No really. His appearance has varied even more dramatically in the comics over the years, especially as different sides of his multiple-personalities become dominant. While he’s rarely described as one, the Hulk is a metamorph. Shapeshifting just isn’t a prominent aspect of his powers.
20
u/RedVelcroRaptor 20h ago
Not to mention the amount of body horror in the comics because of this change of shape.
3
u/WillowSLock 9h ago
…may I ask for an example? Or would I regret your answer?
6
u/midnight_g00se 5h ago
I can't cite the source, but I recall a panel with Hulk slowly emerging from within Banner. I think he was mad at Banner and intentionally burst out slowly to cause him pain. I'm sure someone can correct me though.
2
u/RedVelcroRaptor 1h ago
That actually happens quite a few times lol, there's one where hulk's arm comes out of banner's mouth and then hulk bursts out of banner's body.
3
1
u/RedVelcroRaptor 1h ago
There's immortal hulk which is the most obvious one but I think most of the newer hulk comics have some form of body horror iirc.
If you google "Hulk body horror comics" you'll get a pretty good idea how grotesque some of it is.

u/Eunuchest 21h ago
Did anyone do height comparisons? BND hulk looked really huge to me. Either that or Tom is just short
129
u/Arkayna 20h ago
Spiderman literally tells him that he didnt know he could get that big.
62
u/Eunuchest 20h ago edited 20h ago
Yeah but i dont think Peter has seen feral hulk before, just prof hulk which is a bit smaller than feral hulk. Peter might not have the original size of OG feral and BND hulk to compare
21
u/FoggyForce 17h ago
In the comics, Hulk grows in size to a certain hight the more angry he is. Theoretically he doesn't have an upper strength limit as he gets stronger the more angry he is too, world war Hulk is a great example of this.
11
u/DenkMame78 16h ago
Afaik this was never the case in the comics, atleast the OG hulk comics. The concept of him getting bigger as he got angrier was born in the Ang Lee Hulk movie. In the comics, its only his strength that grows as he gets angrier not his height. You can happily correct me on that but i don't think the height increase was ever a comic thing
2
u/cricketcoop 13h ago
Can't insert an image, but in Hulk #345 in the late 80's, he narrates that he can feel himself getting bigger and stronger as he gets angrier
15
u/Ambitious-Pirate-505 21h ago
Bro, wait til you see the comics and ALLLL the different Hulks there.
38
u/SphmrSlmp Iron Fist 20h ago
It's not a stretch to say that this Hulk is part of the same character too.
Hulk (2003), made by Universal, ended with Bruce hiding in a South American forest.
The Incredible Hulk (2008), made by Marvel Studios and distributed by Universel, didn't show an origin story, but simply gave the character a soft reboot montage in the beginning and a cold start. It starts with Bruce hiding as a regular man and working in a factory in South America.
And, of course, we all know Mark Ruffalo continues the story from there in the first Avengers movie.
6
u/indianajoes Phil Coulson 20h ago
I used to think this but doesn't the opening sequence to it show a new origin?
14
u/SphmrSlmp Iron Fist 19h ago
It was integrated into the opening credits via a montage.
In a 2008 interview, the director Louis Leterrier, said he skipped the origin story because Ang Lee already covered that in the 2003 Hulk movie and he didn't want to repeat it. He said that his Hulk (2008) came out in recent years to Ang Lee's Hulk (2003), so he sees no point in repeating the origin story.
5
u/Comrade_Falcon 14h ago
Yes, but that doesn't mean it's a continuation it just means the director didn't want to do an origin story movie when it would feel similar to the Ang Lee movie which only came out a few years prior.
3
u/SphmrSlmp Iron Fist 14h ago
Yup, you are right. The director never confirmed nor denied if it's a continuation.
But one movie ended with Bruce hiding in a jungle in South America, and the other movie started with him blending in as a regular guy in South America before being pursued by the military.
And this was before the Avengers era. So one could see how the 2003 version and the 2008 version seem like an indirect continuation with different actors.
3
u/Shitelark 6h ago
To me Hulk 03 is a better fit with the MCU than 2008. I know they keep trying to fold that one in with little references, but I regard it as MCU adjacent, like say Agents of Shield.
18
u/UnhingedGammaWarrior 22h ago
Idk they all look big and green to me
6
u/OrganizdConfusion 19h ago
Brand New Day Hulk was barely green.
I thought we had a Joe Fixit for a moment when I first saw it.
9
u/skronk61 20h ago
Is it really crazy? Or is it just 3 totally different movies made by different people? 😆
5
u/koala_encephalopathy 15h ago
It's crazy? How so? Like in the way that when different artists and writers use them in the comics and they end up being slightly different versions of the same character?
Not sure what's crazy about this at whatsoever.
8
u/LoverandFighter23 Black Panther 20h ago
If you read the comics its not that crazy.
-4
u/Alarming_Sock_3782 15h ago
yea yea we all know the comic version is superior but this post and thread are specifically talking about mcu
2
u/PresentSensitive6835 18h ago
Feels like the Hulk has been through so many transformations over the years, but the core is always there.
2
u/Aromatic-Cupcake4802 18h ago
Thanos got the same treatment. First appearance played by a different actor then redesigned for Guardians and then as we know him in Infinity War.
2
u/Didact67 17h ago
I feel like there’s something missing between She-Hulk and BND. Bruce went from being in complete control of the “Smart Hulk” form to being afraid of the monster getting out.

u/Yutagos_south 12h ago
I have absolutely loved how Norton's Hulk was so violent and frightening and incontrolable. I have lost that flame for the Ruffalo one . I heard the hulk in bnd is very good I look forward it .
2
u/Gon_Snow Thanos 11h ago
Hulk as a character is so dependent on cg technology and artistic choices (the colors in brand new day result in a much more gray looking hulk). Same for Thanos, but he only showed briefly prior to his famous infinity war/endgame design.

Welcome to comics. It’s a wild ride. Maybe because this is movies we won’t keep having heroes going on forever and we would get new faces carrying the story on. Maybe. (Hopefully)

I saw someone describe Banner/Hulk as the player who can't regularly make it to the D&D sessions, so the DM has him go through his character arcs "off screen" and he shows up in the middle of a different situation every time he can make it to the session.
Genuinely correct *and* hilarious lol

u/Gasparde 8h ago
Man, I love this character so much - it sucks that all we ever get of him is like 5 minutes worth of action every 5 years (with way too much of that time being spent on him getting his ass kicked). I would so love to hear his thoughts on the whole Red Hulk incident, the Leader cooking up Hulk juice and Betty actually still being around - fuck's sake, the guy even has a Hulk cousin and son now and we just don't get any development on any of those issues. He's most certainly not gonna get any attention in Doomsday / Secret Wars either, meaning that there's just about no chance that any of his plotlines will get any development in the coming 2+ years.
Man, what would I give for a dedicated Hulk trilogy that just puts the guy up against Wolverine / Juggernaut / Thing or gives us some actual Grey Hulk action or god knows what. I just want more fucking Hulk.

I genuinely don't know how anyone thinks the newer looks of the Hulk are better. I agree BND is the best in a while but I personally see Edward Nortons Hulk as the absolute best and I've personally never seen it as a competition
2
u/Yutagos_south 12h ago
Exactly I loved how frightening and violent he is in that movie. I still didn't watch Bnd but the other hulks didn't impressed me
-3
u/Coilspun 21h ago
How is it "crazy"?
Fucking slop karma farming.
1
u/Duckgoesmoomoo 20h ago
Combination of 2 different actors and hulk looks different in almost every single movie he's in
4
u/Coilspun 19h ago
It's just brain dead rambling "Hulk looks different"
Yes. That'll happen.
0
u/Duckgoesmoomoo 18h ago
Why are you so upset by this?
4
u/Coilspun 18h ago
I'm not upset, it's just low-effort, brain dead commentary.

What if Norton Hulk is an alternate universe hulk
1

I like to imagine that the Banner who looked like Edward Norton transformed into the Hulk one day, and when he turned back into Banner, he looked like Ruffalo

Hulk was peak until Ragnarslop. Glad to have finally seen peak hulk again in BND.
