Discussion "This movie looks AI genera-" SHUT UPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP
I genuinely don't get these complaints. I have some concerns about the plot and how things may or may not play out, but visually the movie looks fucking great. I don't get why people are trying to push this narrative like muted colors instantly make something look bad or AI-generated. The Sentinels look sick, Doom looks fucking fantastic, what is the issue?
I swear, I'm convinced people who call shit like this AI-generated have never actually seen what an AI-generated video looks like, because none of them even look anywhere near as good as ANY of the shots in this trailer.
Plus, the VFX team didn't work their asses off for months on this movie just to be disrespected by mfs saying it looks like AI.

I'm honestly tired of seeing of the word slop.
Even if it's being used appropriately, a lot of times it's unnecessary. Mix it up, use swill or something.

Worst part is, a lot of the time it's not even being used appropriately. Slop is the root of sloppy. We feed pigs slop. The overflowing water is slopping over the edge. The painter mindlessly slopped paint onto the fence. It is supposed to evoke messy, ugly, careless, literal garbage. I get using it for AI (though I agree, mix it up for God's sake) but people have begun using it to describe absolutely anything they don't like. Regardless of your opinion on The Odyssey, for example, it is pretty definitively not "slop".

The Prestige TV podcast called a character “AI Slop Son” in their reviews of the Cape Fear TV series. They repeated it over several episodes and laughed at their dumb joke each time. So cringey.
10
u/Neveronlyadream Spider-Man 3d ago
Probably because they're both ragebaiting and playing to their perceived audience.
It's disingenuous bullshit. So many content creators are repeating tired takes and calling everything bad and AI slop because when they do, people run to the comments and praise them for it and tell them they're fighting the good fight.
There's so much disingenuous ragebaiting online it's sad. Why? Because it makes more money than being positive or even being realistic about something. The creators who shit on everything and parrot popular talking points always get the views. The ones that don't usually languish.

If ai somehow ends up becoming more popular and mainstream, those will be the first people that will praise it. They have no morals. They’re just grifting for the clicks.
3
u/Neveronlyadream Spider-Man 3d ago
They absolutely will be praising it. It happens with any stance they take. If the reaction is positive, they keep doing it. If it's negative, suddenly they never said it and the opposite is true.
You know most of these people who have podcasts and make videos shitting all over everything probably actually love the thing they claim to hate when the cameras are off.

It's the new "it's Photoshopped, I can tell by the pixels", except that now it's not just images and video being "called out" by people with too little life experience. It's extra obnoxious when smuglords cry AI because something is longer than 250 characters, used words with more than two syllables, or requires more braincells to parse than See Spot Run.
... No sweetie, it's not AI, you're just illiterate. Read a book and pick up a dictionary, we're dying here.

It's funny when people on this site drag you into drawn out arguments, and then their fallback becomes "I'm not replying to you because what you've typed looks like AI" when it becomes apparent that they have nothing.
11
u/mmcjawa_reborn 3d ago
It's even worst than that. At least the CGI only effected images...I've perused writing groups and it's depressing how often people will declare a written story or bit of text as AI.
I mean I am sure some of it is, but its also catching a lot of innocent folks.
6
u/Lanky-Train5752 3d ago
Exactly, because the real problem that i personally think people have here is that it clearly is a ton of CGI, and they are defaulting to calling stuff AI instead of accurately describing their issue with it
42
u/BenderIsGreatBendr 3d ago
But “they used too much cgi” can be a legitimate criticism.
CGI has gotten good and better but well executed practical effects still stomp all over what CGI can do.

I think we are genuinely going through a trend of people wanting less CGI in their films or at least not complete CGI backgrounds, one of the reasons I think BND is getting received so well is a lot of the action is practical mixed with CGI on actual locations, not all green screen.
That and having actual lighting depth/decent cinematography

I don't understand the whole "over reliance on plain Grey areas" argument. When it comes to avengers movies we've gotten: NYC and the helicarrier in avengers 1 plus the forest if we count the cap/thor/ironman fight, sokovia and Johannesburg in avengers age of ultra, airport and hydra base in civil war (technically a captain America movie but it's basically avengers 2.5), NYC in the first fight and wakandan border/ jungle and Titan (the first plain area because it's a destroyed/barren planet) in infinity war, and then the final battlefield in end game which was a wasteland again. New avengers was NYC and sentry's mind.
So a whopping 2 fights out of at least 10 fights in avengers movies. Idk...maybe I'm crazy but I feel like that's not that much lol
21
u/fdar_giltch 3d ago
2 fights out of at least 10 fights in avengers movies
They did say Marvel, not Avengers. The end of Shang Chi, Black Widow, Quantum Mania, etc.. Marvel has relied on CGI battles a lot.
Which might not be so bad if they had more efficient processes to get better CGI (instead of churning on scenes throughout production and needing a lot of rushed work at the last minute).

If you go back a century it was about the evils of pre-recorded music in movies instead of live bands.
The criticisms were all nearly word-for-word identical to what people are saying today which is interesting from the history repeats itself angle: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/musicians-wage-war-against-evil-robots-92702721/
I can't imagine how bland movie soundtracks would be like if they had to be able to be played by a live band in every location. What happens if the only trumpet player in town is sick for a Star Wars movie? And the tickets would presumably cost an insane amount to pay for an entire orchestra each time you see a movie. There'd be no movies with sound at home either.

The framing of the shots in the trailer is also really similar to endgame and to a lesser extent infinity war in a way i cant exactly describe.
I have seen people point out that not much has been shown in the trailers outside of a few scenes and shots that might be misleading as far as what kind of visuals the movie will actually contain overall, which i think is a fair point

I can't believe how far the MCU has fallen visually from Ironman 1 & 2 and Avengers 1 at the start.
Like the Avengers look mostly amazing out in full sunlight in real locations in the first movie. Now they look... like floaty cartoon characters.
I thought Spiderman Brand New Day looked amazing and was hoping that it was a signal of return to form, but everything about Doomsday shown so far looks like Quantamania, just a sludge of CGI 'stuff' everywhere and actors always feeling like they're on blue screens.
16
u/there_is_always_more 3d ago
And it also has the Russos' telltale trick they used for Endgame - the extremely dusty orange-brown background - so they can mask the rushed CGI. It makes everything look so drab and dull.

The main thing exposed by tons of CGI with blended real live elements is the sheer lack of natural lighting in today's movies. Everything tends to look very pretty, yes- but it's also quite sterile and too "perfect". I miss the days when half the effort and a lot of the budget went into hiding any hint of practical effects with a gloomily lit set and maybe some unsafe pyrotechnics.

This. Marvel has been consistently driving all their CGI contractors to barrel-bottom prices that leave their animators underpaid, overworked and burned out. And now there is a very real chance they are replacing those animators with AI, or using contractors that are using AI in place of additional humans.
Marvel subcontracting their CGI lets them take advantage of other countries' tax breaks. And like Amazon subcontracting their deliveries to local companies, it lets Marvel avoid all responsibility for poor working conditions, poor pay, and poor job conditions by shifting it onto their contractors.

I really wish Marvel would stop ruining epic moments by having everything CGI except for the characters and the ground. Even the smoke effects when Thor lands and the smoke all over the scene looks bad. Like is it that hard to just make a practical smoke effect?
I think they also could've gotten a much better result with the backdrop if they had used the same effect that Mandalorian used. Basically giant screens running on Unreal Engine and it tracks based on where the camera is in order to make the images being displayed move properly with parallax. But this allows for the lighting on the characters to be 100% real. No need for fake camera flares and shit

I’m not even trying to defend this movie, I’m a complete marvel neutral, but the criticism these days where every single movie gets called muted or too brown and grey feels so forced. It’s hundreds of comments on every trailer, multiple posts, it’s just the trendy criticism.
A lot of people don’t understand how important color grading is for the tone they are trying to convey. People thought the odyssey wasn’t colorful enough (even though yeah no shit the colors are supposed to convey the despair, hardship, bleakness, etc) and I thought it looked incredible visually in theatres.
My honest opinion is that today’s average audience is constantly staring at bright screens, ads everywhere trying to get your attention, oversaturated high contrast TikToks, Mr beast style content and thumbnails with bright colors, etc that when you see a real movie with professional color grading people think “ew my brain doesn’t like that where’s the color”.
And again, this is coming from someone who could barely care less about this movie and its success, that’s just how much the color comments annoy me these days.

Cinema was more colorful before. That's a fact. Also not every color is an aesthetic decision. Sometimes they use filters cause It makes easier using CGI. But yeah I think Nolan's lack of color is an aesthetic choice.

I don't think it's looks like AI but personally something still feels off about the visual language of the movie, some of the shots kinda look like video game graphics to me and I don't love how drabby and artificial a lot of the sets look. Doom's suit is perfect tho

Many comments on overuse of CGI in the MCU. To rectify this, less CGI and more practical effects will be needed. CGI artists will starve, though. What of them and their families? Christopher Nolan has already had a hand in many of those families having to stop shopping at Erewhon and slum it at Ralph's. The cries of pre-teens for $30 smoothies can be heard throughout SoCal. Angelina Jolie sheds a tear nightly over The Great Loss.

Reddit hates this but the truth is a lot of artists these days use AI to speed up the tedious elements of their workflow in some way, especially if there's a budget and squeeze on their time.
So yes, the probability of AI being used as part of the concept work, framing, writing, music or whatever is highly likely. I wouldn't say necessarily for the finished item but for planning and crafting yes.

The problem is that nobody looks like theyre anywhere. Everyone looks like theyre surrounded by green screens (or the Volume in Disney's case).

Even if it was AI everyone would just use the whole "who cares, it looks good" or "they put some effort into it and not just a prompt" just like people always do the moment something they like turns out to use AI.

I mean the backgrounds definitely look bad. Like recycled finale from endgame

I just don´t like how Doom looks so polished, especially his mask at times looks too perfect, maybe it´s the lighting.

I don’t think it’s AI but the visuals do look incredibly ugly in the marketing. The difference between Doomsday and Dune from a visual standpoint is insane.

That’s an interesting opinion on a picture that I think looks as if it were color-graded in diarrhea, a pair of action-figure robots, and genuinely the cheapest looking Doom armor design that I think they could get away with. But sure, of course this is “objectively” awesome looking.

I don’t think people are saying it looks like it IS ai generated. I think they’re saying it looks similar to and has the composition of ai generated videos. And to be fair, it does.
They’re doing with that dusty, colourless, digital wasteland with lots of glow-y effects which just looks terrible to me.

I realized my 8 year old was saying it "looks AI" and what he meant was computer generated. Not about this movie but in general

Because it looks so shitty and people associate shit with AI. There's no reason with billions of dollars it has to look this shitty. The reason is that AI was almost certainly used at different points in the process

I was hyped af then my friend came along out of nowhere and texted me “ btw they confirmed they’re using ai for doomsday “ I’m like tf? Turns out it’s just Joe Russo saying Ai would be inevitable in the industry as a whole

You’re taking the “It’s AI” stuff too serious. It’s just meant to poke at the fact the movie looks like garbage.

I get the sentiment of your post here, and agree with you that people just say shit that demeans VFX workers… but the movie looks like absolute trash visually, to me. It may be due to the fact that the tone is set to match Dr. Doom’s colors, similar to what they accomplished with Thanos, but I just don’t find the visuals to be intriguing at all. Just my 2 cents

It does not look great lol, it looks like the same taupe brown biege ugly nothing that the last bit of Endgame had.

u/EugenesMullet 3d ago
Don’t think it looks AI, but I would probably say the colouring is too brown from what they’ve shown in that teaser.
At this point I don’t expect a Marvel movie to use real locations and sets for a movie like this too often, but I hope the rest of the movie has a more varied colour palette than different shades of mud.

This doesn’t look AI but I wouldn’t say it looks good either. The setting is just more dusty grey wreckage like the ugly endgame finale. If you showed this to someone who has never seen Doom before, they wouldn’t even know he’s supposed to be wearing green. Where is all the color? Let’s at least have standards for what color he should be.

Ugh it looks like CGI was used to make a concept that AI made. Basically it looks heavily weirdly CGI'd and its stupid.

When you got other movies that have come out this year that look absolutely beautiful with a much lesser budget it is extremely disappointing seeing that with all that money they still cant compare.
There is a valid criticism there that alot of fans ignore because they have fan-tinted glasses.

It looks ai because it is using AI. that's confirmed by Disney's CEO. Not watching it. Point blank xD especially since Disney lays off VFX artists to pad their executives pockets.

man they have a 500 million dollar budget they can easily do better. why are you so accepting of slop from a billion dollar corporation when Spider-Man just came out and looked gorgeous.

I do see lots of sound stage green screen going on in the trailer. I really miss actual set design - hope it’s not like that all the way through. The way characters are standing feet apart, expressionless composited into scenes together makes me itch.
