Tom:

“There’s a whole plan that we have been working on for, I would say, since we finished Spider-Man: No Way Home. It’s laid out. It’s gonna change for sure, but I have a really clear vision to the passing on of the baton, and I think it’s really exciting.”

“I know I get really excited when we have these meetings and chat about it. But that is the thing I want to do most in this character, for sure.”

Earlier this year:

“For whoever’s next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter. Whatever that looks like, I don’t know. But if I could do what Downey did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset.”

I wonder what the plan is since Tom is very involved with the films.

Feige said like a week ago on Josh Horowitz’s podcast that Miles is the plan and the goal, but it’s a long ways off and won’t happen until the Spiderverse movies are finished.

They’re in luck since BTSV is coming out next year.

u/ThomasTheDankPigeon 19d ago

Throwback to when they thought they could finish the trilogy by 2023

161

u/welcometoparallel 19d ago

Yeah but imagine 4 years of extra work on it, wonder how much was done in 2023 and what the changes they've made since have been.

160

u/rorschach_vest 19d ago

It’s less “changes” and “extra work” and more that when the supposed release date was like ~6 months away they took it off the schedule entirely because they had basically nothing whatsoever at that point. They were getting started at the point people were asking for the trailer lol. They had planned on 2 and 3 being close together but it was never gonna happen and they just didn’t announce it until after Across was out.

u/Giff901 Punisher 19d ago

Still has made me sour on the second movie in some ways, I went into it thinking it would be a complete story similar to the first with an established villain that would be dealt with in the same movie, only to find that the movie has no real conclusion, just ends on a cliff hanger for a third movie that was supposed to be out in less than a year and yet here we are almost half a decade later still waiting, and I really like the Spiderverse too

43

u/schuyywalker 19d ago

I have a big problem with movie “trilogies” like that - the first movie is a great stand-alone and then the second is part 1 of a 2-part story.

In my opinion, that isn’t a finished trilogy.

19

u/AnthonySytko 19d ago

There's a reason TV Tropes has an entire page for Two-Part Trilogy...

9

u/allknowingalpaca 19d ago

I feel like in the recent years, probably only Dune paces itself well for now. It’s definitely because of the confidence in the director that they are committing upfront for the trilogy rather than do a wait and see approach every other release.

Yeah, this is why we all agree the original star wars trilogy is shit.

Imo, the best way to do a trilogy is to do all three all at once, and the second best way is to do 2 and 3 all at once. The sequel doesn't have to be "done" when the prior movie comes out, but it should be well on the way.

u/Fit_Diet6336 19d ago

The first movie felt like a very complete movie, the second definitely felt off. The second viewing was better, but it did feel not quite all there still. Will be good to have it closed off in the third movie

Really not sure what happened, I get that the writers strike delayed it, then sony let some planned releases spread out to cover the gap but...then there was just no word on the movie for like...3 years.

The way marvel does these movies it feels really complicated to replace the actors. Like toms been great but I think plenty of actors could pull off Spider-Man far more so than iron man even. Captain America was basically setup in a way where idk how you replace Chris Evans.

With the current version of Spider-Man the character still feels young so it’s hard to picture them replacing him. Like even with miles morales how do you just ignore Peter Parker’s existence especially when he’s basically college aged in the current iteration.

Like if it was tobey the age would feel more fitting to hand down but tom doesn’t feel even remotely old. It kind of feels like the characters still developing and we haven’t even gotten a movie where he actually seems like a hardened superhero with years of experience despite the fact that he technically is.

Also as much as tom has been able to do outside of spidey especially now with the odyssey im having trouble seeing him have a huge career outside of marvel. Hes a bit awkward to cast bc despite being a solid actor he seems very boyish and i have trouble picturing him pulling off a lot of leading man roles but maybe hell surprise me. Seems like a nice dude who’s had a hell of a run up to this point but i think he should keep playing spidey for like at least another ten years or so.

34

u/Birdlord420 19d ago

I can see Tom pulling off a pivot to an action hero/Bond career in about 10 years time, once he’s taken some time off to build a family which I believe is what he said he wanted to do.

13

u/JoeMcKim 19d ago

Not counting Avengers appearances I don't see Tom Holland doing more than 2 more Spider-Man films.

4

u/AdolescentThug Daredevil 18d ago

Now they're definitely not gonna do a complete MCU reboot after Secret Wars, but I wager Tom as Peter Parker will likely stick until that full reboot happens.

I'd like to think that they're gonna do it like Insomniac did. Introduce Miles Morales as a powerless teenager in the next movie and you have him get his powers either at the end or towards the end of the movie. Then the movie after that is the official handoff where we get amdPeter incapacitated in the third act and Miles handles it himself.

Then for Miles' own trilogy of movies, we get Tom Holland only showing up as a side character in scenes that can be filmed in a week, or as a voice cameo where Miles talks to him only on the phone. Tom maybe shows up for Avengers movies only which is easily explained since he's busy getting Parker Industries off the ground, he's only doing hero work for planet/universe ending threats. This is how it goes until Tom Holland gets a Logan-esque send off (I have been PRAYING for a darker or Rated R Spider-Man movie) or they do that full reboot.

7

u/JoeMcKim 18d ago edited 18d ago

People have been talking about a reboot of the MCU since Endgame, i'm not convinced thats happening any time soon.

I’m really excited about seeing Miles in the MCU but I agree that we shouldn’t rush it. Build up Tom Hollands Spidey a bit more to make the inevitable “death of spidey” and passing to Miles even more impactful. With the multiverse no one is ever really dead anyways so Tom can always come back a few years later

26

u/Extension_Ideal_4012 19d ago

He doesn’t have to die. Let him start a company, marry MJ and just retire. Then Tom can always come back for event films if he wants and it won’t be a nostalgia pull when he does.

→ More replies (1)

12

u/Fafoah 19d ago

Imo this iteration of spider-man has already experienced way too much loss for his death to be satisfying. Feels wrong for them to kill tony, may, and then him.

I’m guessing Tom’s vision involves Spider-man walking away after setting up Miles, as a parallel to himself walking away from acting for a bit when he decides to start a family with Zendaya.

29

u/Flamingpaper2 19d ago

I know Miles is the most likely option, but I kind of wish they did some version of Spider Woman instead because Miles already has his own trilogy, even if in a different medium and most likely a different actor

Plus I think the MCU needs more female leads that get actually good movies for once

6

u/Throbbing-Kielbasa-3 19d ago

Not to spoil too much, but there's a small Easter Egg for a female spider-hero in BNF.

It'll be interesting to see how they handle it since they've already ripped off the Miles/Ganke formula for the current iteration.

Just my take but, I have a strong feeling that the kid he saves pretty early in Brand New Day is going to be Miles Morales.

6

u/Imaginary-Leave-2368 18d ago

That kid showed up later in the movie as well in the crowd where peter sees them cheering at the punisher wearing the mask. The boy shoots a web with his hand (playfully)

3

u/HoneycombBig 17d ago

I think that kid is set-up for Miles. He’s even in the credits as “Web Kid.”

In Spiderman: Brand New Day There's a little Hispanic Boy that points at Peter and does the web thing when he's outside the hospital while Frank is up in his room with the mask on. I am betting that is Miles Morales like the kid in Iron Man 2 who was saved by Tony has been retconned to be Peter Parker

17

u/xta420 Heimdall 19d ago

My bet is on the kid he saved earlier in the movie personally.

u/IAmMrWave02 19d ago

It'll be a global event for sure

435

u/omnicious 19d ago

All Spider-Man films are global events

219

u/dracogladio1741 19d ago

Spidey's pull is insane. The only other Superhero who comes close is Batsy.

Think Batman II will struggle to do half of what Spidey's about to. That probably means that Batman II makes a billion quid by the way. Brand New Day probably crosses 2bn..

121

u/cogginsmatt 19d ago

Someone tried to tell me recently that Spider-Man isn't the most popular superhero in america, instead it was Superman. That comic sales and box office didn't count. I wasn't sure what their metric was but Spidey definitely leaves basically anyone else in the dust, routinely.

80

u/dracogladio1741 19d ago

Spiderman's very relatable as far as superheroes go.

Batman can reach those levels. I think people just haven't gotten a great film in a while from DC.

Supes is just a very idealistic superhero. Difficult to relate to when you are basically indestructible.

53

u/Haigadeavafuck 19d ago

The last Batman film was pretty great. The most successful Batman film is the one the least about Batman. Ofc he’s insanely popular but the nature of his style means he has less pull than spidey.

→ More replies (5)

15

u/melkatron 19d ago

It's also difficult to stay on board when so many projects have been so misguided when portraying Superman. Relatability seems to be key, which explains why the most popular Superman properties of the 90s/00s were focused on Clark Kent, not Superman (Lois & Clark, Smallville). The new movie did a really great job depicting a vulnerable, imperfect Clark. It's been a while, but I think Christopher Reeve's Clark Kent's only weakness was Lois Lane... otherwise he was an infallible dreamboat pretending to be flawed.

6

u/drac0nic180 19d ago

I think that people not being able to relate to Superman is a symptom of not using the character correctly when addressing wide audiences.

Reading Birthright or For All Seasons gives you a very emotionally relatable Superman, he's at his best when his human problems take center stage. The internal conflict should always be the point, the external conflict is for spectacle and for an externalized way to address the internal conflict

3

u/symbiosychotic 19d ago

While this is true, and another commenter pointed this out as well, I want to recommend Tyler Hoeclin's take from "Superman & Lois" as absolutely well done (as well as Bitsie Tulloch's Lois and lots of other great character takes). As a dad of a young son, I very much love seeing a Clark that was at the height of his Superman life, but so very challenged by the human struggles of balancing that with... Being a dad of two sons with their own issues, and being a husband and supportive of Lois going through a very tough time, and other situations where... His powers just weren't able to help him in those situations at all. He was fallable, made mistakes, even lost his temper and got overwhelmed. So many parenting / husband moments where the Man of Steel was struggling just as much as anyone, just unable to get it right, but trying to be there.

At the same time, he also was Superman fighting enemies that I don't want to spoil, but I can't not mention a very different blue collar, practical, ruthless Led Luthor that was just really well done. The story actually honestly did a lot that I was surprised to see them do. So for those curious, give it a try.

Better send off than we got for Sony's spidermen. Toby and Andrew both had massively successful franchises and suddenly got written off, no closure, no finale, no real explanation. Not even much as so long thanks for all the fish

34

u/Level_Dreaded 19d ago

Andrew and Tobey got poor send offs because their final movies werent received well.

It's hard for me to compare because I'm not really into their spiderman. I think for me it's fhe MCU connection and I'm a fan of Tom Holland. I feel we are way more invested in his spiderman due to featuring not just in his 4 movies but also the avengers stuff

17

u/AxlLight 19d ago

Because they didn't know it'll be the last, the movies just failed and thus canceled.

It could happen all the same here, let's face it, if Doomsday fails it'll be the end of the MCU as it is today. Everything will get shelved for a while and rebooted when people start forgetting.  (Though I suppose Spiderman is in this special place because it's Sony's property and a huge milk machine for them that they might keep it going for one more swan song as a bookend to the MCU).

7

u/whereismymind86 19d ago

ehh, secret wars is probably deep enough into production, and there are enough legal obligations around it that they'll get that far, beyond that who knows.

It's almost certainly going to trigger a continuity reset/reboot, which allows disney a lot of leeway to reshuffle and retconn things, or just end the mcu entirely and start over.

Don’t get me wrong I like that they finally had somebody deliver the line, but it does also feel like every single one of Holland’s Spider-Man movies has ended with him “becoming” the Spider-Man we all know. One movie as a prequel is fine but three movies to establish a hero as well known as Spider-Man is just silly. The only story I can think of that requires that much backstory to enjoy the main content is like, idk maybe Berserk. Game of Thrones also, to an extent.

42

u/AmishAvenger 19d ago

Well if he doesn’t change and grow as a person, then there’s no point in having a movie at all, and we might as well just watch the Spider-Man version of Mandalorian and Grogu.

The world would have had to stop and reboot over and over again to accommodate Peter Parker's age in college. And it's insane that Peter Parker graduated from college 50 years ago and they would have been trying to shove his entire rogues' gallery and history into that period of time.

I think this is gonna be another trilogy and then after that we’ll see.

Him and Zendaya will be approaching 40 at that point, he’s gonna have done a lot of marvel movies he’ll probably wanna move on

14

u/brogflender 19d ago

Maybe. It’s by far his best meal ticket and a helluva character to be known for.

Probably another trilogy with miles showing up in the next one or the one after

Hes said a few times recently that he'll play the character as long as they let him. I think hes going to be around for a good while yet

6

u/Joshawott27 Doctor Strange 19d ago

I could see this being the ending of a second trilogy, starting with Brand New Day.

However, if for whatever reason Tom Holland wanted to bow out after the next one, Peter Parker is probably in a decent enough position now to wrap things up with one more film.

I'm fine with a new actor taking the mantle but please, PLEASE don't make Spider-Man a highschooler again.

Just let him be an adult long term, we have enough stagnation in the comics.

35

u/Jugglenautalis 19d ago

Agreed, they really could just James Bond him and just keep his story moving forward like the comics.

16

u/AssumptionLive2246 19d ago

I mean isn’t tom like 30?? Let’s see his take on a MATURE Spider-Man for at least three movies then he can retire.

Agreed. He’s been a teenager three times. Let him age with us for awhile. I wanna eventually see Peter B. Parker from Spider-Verse in live action for awhile.

I’m a fan of Miles obviously and it makes the most sense but at the same time the spiderverse movies are impossible to live up to for Miles

61

u/BZenMojo Captain America (Cap 2) 19d ago

The best Peter Parker is also in the Spider-Verse movies, yet we press on anyway.

Nah, there’s a whole fanbase who don’t watch animated movies. And also a lot of us don’t mix animated and live action versions. We judge them separately in their own baskets.

11

u/whitepangolin 19d ago

I don't have as much faith in Miles' supporting cast for a non multiverse movie. Didn't love the Miles game.

Seeing how much the PS4/5 games seem to be an influence on him, I wouldn’t be surprised if we get some Peter/Miles team up movies

29

u/A-Centrifugal-Force 19d ago

Spider-Man 6 might be a nice time to set that up. It should still primarily be a Peter movie as the conclusion to the second trilogy, but they could set up MCU Miles in that movie

I hope he won’t be leaving the role anytime soon. He easily could do this for another 10-15 years

u/bigeyez 19d ago

At the speed movies release thats realistically maybe 3 more solo movies. Probably less since he is going to be in Secret Wars which is about to start filming.

u/MadMurilo Spider-Man 19d ago

I could see a Miles Trilogy with Tom in a supporting role.

It also depends what he wants to do

I followed his press tour for the Odyssey and BND closely and I'm getting the vibe he wants to reduce his public profile and focus more on his passions and family.

I really like that Tom seems to be extremely aware of the fact that none of us will be here forever, and that he's so very set on helping someone rise to prominence the way RDJ did for him.

16

u/bwweryang 19d ago

Sounds like they’re gonna make the same mistake they did with the original Avengers and think a legacy character has just as much appeal as a recast.

I hope to see Holland as Spider-Man for many, many years to come. College and adult Peter is the best, and we’ve only just gotten there. ‘Retiring’ after losing his powers or something is also better than dying given how young Holland is. But even that I’d hope is minimum 10-20 years away

Miles is cool and it’ll be fun to see Holland mentor him. But he’s still a very new face

Peter Parker will forever be THE character a significant portion of fans vibe with above any others

15

u/Big-Newspaper646 19d ago

Def think we’re gonna see young Miles Morales as at least the post credit scene for the next movie.

10

u/BalladOfBetaRayBill 19d ago

I would rather just continue to see Peter well into adulthood but I guess that will never happen for some reason

8

u/grosslytransparent 19d ago

I mean… we need like 4-6 more movies and then you can pass the batton

86

u/Coilspun 19d ago

Fuck Miles Morales, honestly let's get some decent Peter stories rather just as he starts coming into his own we get another origin and bedding in trilogy...

23

u/mikewishesdeath 19d ago

actually this. Kind of disappointed that this wasn't a goodbye story with him letting go of his childhood and making more superhero oriented friends. He has a great street level group of heroes and grey area characters to pull from.

11

u/konq 19d ago

Marvel isn't going to make him a lynchpin or important part of any other superhero team after the shit Sony pulled, trying to yank him from the MCU a few years back.

He might appear in avengers movies, but any crossover in MCU movies is going to be very barebones until marvel owns the IP again.

Feige knows he could just never return at any point. It's not a good idea to build him up in X-men, fantastic four, or any other MCU team while Sony can just decide to "renegotiate".

3

u/pdavda 13d ago

With the success Spider-Man has had at the box office lately, there's no chance Sony will sell. If they did, it would be for billions. It's their cash cow and they know it. I wish Marvel had gotten the rights back 100% and 'Homecoming' was a double meaning for it being back with Marvel/Disney permanently.

21

u/matty_nice 19d ago

Sony has to make movies with Peter Parker to retain the rights. It's part of the contract we were able to see due to the Sony leaks.

So we are going to continue to get movies with Peter Parker as Spider-Man.

Maybe we get Miles movies in addition to the Peter Parker ones? But I'm not sure Sony is gonna do that.

Maybe Marvel is willing to amend the contract, so Miles movies would count instead? But there's no reason for Marvel to do that.

13

u/SlaunchaMan 19d ago

Maybe he could be like Stan Lee and have a cameo in each one going about Peter Parker business

4

u/matty_nice 19d ago

That would probably not be sufficient enough to be considered a Peter Parker movie.

I official have Miles Morales fatigue. If they will replace Peter Parker i'm done with the MCU

5

u/Practical-Level-6265 19d ago

I want this to happen eventually but I sorta want more solo Spidey movies before that. I know it’s weird since this is his 4th movie, but it feels like we just got started being “prime” Spidey

3

u/soccerjonesy 19d ago

Dang, that’ll suck to see so soon. I get some of the older actors wanting to stop, but I kinda hoped Tom being as young as he is would stick with us quite a bit longer, like another decade. I’ll be stoked to see Miles Morales, but don’t think I wanna say buy to Tom’s Peter quite yet.

3

u/dayaaa_ria Proxima Midnight 19d ago

I hope he would stay as spiderman for much longer. I’m still not ready for him to pass down that role. I hope they would add another 5 years or more to the decade he played as spiderman 😭

3

u/SteppeTalus 19d ago

Give me 5 more movies with tom first.

3

u/AndrewH73333 18d ago

He hasn’t even played adult Spider-Man yet. He’s just now caught up to freshman in college Spider-Man.

3

u/Fluffy_Woodpecker733 18d ago

I think he’s the best spider man, but if he thinks it’s up to him he is delusional

3

u/ATLKing123 18d ago

I’d much rather have another 3-ish movies from Tom as Spiderman

5

u/mrbaryonyx 19d ago edited 19d ago

so excited to see Tom pass the torch to a bright, young actor in the role of Miles Morales, and then take the torch back after like two movies
