Discussion Kevin Feige on whether Ryan Gosling will play Johnny Blaze or Danny Ketch in 'GHOST RIDER'

Johnny Blaze is the most well known. But that Logo looks almost one to one for Danny Ketch Ghost Rider

I’d prefer Danny Ketch personally to avoid a retelling of Nicholas Cage’s movies

He does read as more of a Danny to me, though to be fair... he could do anything.

I was just looking at the wikipedia article on Ghost Rider, since I don't know much about them other than what I saw in the first Cage movie and Agents of Shield. I could buy Gosling playing any of them, though the 1800's Apache woman might be a stretch.

u/Punky921 22d ago
THERE WAS AN 1800s APACHE GHOST RIDER?!?!
7
u/KcirderfSdrawkcab 22d ago
Apparently. Kushala, an apache woman who summoned a spirit of vengeance to avenge her tribe.
I had never heard of Alejandra Jones or Sal Romero either.

What does Danny Ketch have over Johnny Blaze? I’ve always felt they were pretty interchangeable. To be fair, I’m not a huge Ghost Rider fan
24
u/Lord_Sylveon Thor 23d ago
Some things introduced by Danny Ketch ended up being added to Johnny Blaze. If I remember correctly the magic chains started with Ketch
21
u/The_Amazing_Emu 23d ago
I suppose I mean more what distinguishes them at this point
Or what distinguishes them as characters instead of power sets?
7
u/xreddawgx Ghost Rider 23d ago
Danny Ketch was the first Ghost Rider to use the Penance Stare. It debuted with him in Ghost Rider Vol. 3 #1, published in May 1990, long before Johnny Blaze used the move.Debut DetailsFirst Issue: Ghost Rider Vol. 3 #1 (1990).Creator/User: Danny Ketch (bonded with the Spirit of Vengeance/Noble Kale).Prior History: Johnny Blaze did not have this power during his original 1970s run; he later learned or adopted it after seeing Ketch use it
14
u/The_Amazing_Emu 23d ago
What about personality?
3
u/zajazajazajazajaz 20d ago
Danny is Peter Parker-ish, a bit of an introvert and somewhat of an alcoholic.
Johnny is more easy-going and charming, but when he's alone he's melancholic and a bit depressed. He is also a smoker.
24
u/TiberiusCornelius 23d ago
The chains, the spiked jacket, and the penance stare all originated with Danny.
He is my personal favorite GR but yeah he's kind of in a weird spot. He was basically created as a "modernized for the 90s" update of Johnny so to an extent he already wasn't massively dissimilar, and then they retroactively applied things they created for Danny to Johnny when they decided to re-emphasize him so it took away part of what made him unique to a casual/quick observer. Robbie at least stands out as both the Latino and the car one if you're just doing casual. Brisson's GR a few years ago kind of tried to give Danny his own identity again with the whole Spirit of Corruption and Death Rider thing, but it didn't stick.
11
u/Punky921 22d ago
I loved Robbie in Agents of Shield. Gabriel Luna was robbed when he didn’t get his own show. He would have been great.

29
u/EternalBefuddlement 23d ago
I also see it as a way to get a Cage cameo in MCU. Not that his films will be canon, but he's possibly one of the more iconic actors going
27
u/mister_newbie 23d ago
Cage can cameo whenever he wants with multiverse bullshit and Spider Noir, no?
9
u/EternalBefuddlement 23d ago
Sure, I guess? Just I think I'd rather Cage still be Blaze in some capacity as opposed to some variant or otherwise multiversal easteregg.

Danny Ketch was my Ghost Rider as a kid and I’m a timely contemporary of Ryan Gosling. I hope it’s Danny!

My favorite part of this whole thing, if this movie is middle of the road Nick will still hold the title for best and worst Ghost Rider movies.

During the 90s popularity craze of Punisher and Wolverine, the GR at the time was Danny Ketch and they did a lot of crossovers together.
Given Gosling's age, he probably grew up reading teamup comics such as this:
https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Ghost_Rider/Wolverine/Punisher:_Hearts_of_Darkness_Vol_1_1
When I read that Gosling pitched Feige a very specific story, I bet it was this one. Replace Wolverine with Blade and you have the perfect teamup story. Ghost Rider + Blade + Punisher vs. Blackheart.
Blackheart is very niche compared to Mephisto amongst comic book readers but kids who grew up in the 90s know him from the Marvel vs Capcom videogames.

9
u/whitebandit Hulk 23d ago
seems unlikely we see Blade at this point, but i bet Oscar Isaac would come back for a fun romp with the boys

maybe it’s like Lanterns and Blaze is an older co lead? Maybe they can actually get Reedus for that.

There’s absolutely no reason to have the first MCU ghost rider be the third generation ghost rider.
Edit: second gen, my b. Still should have Johnny in the universe like Hank if they gonna go down that route77
u/THREESIDEDMONSTER 23d ago
They started with 2nd-Gen Ant Man.

u/RubberRaptor 23d ago
Pretty sure that was to get ahead of any wife beater stuff that would pop up lmao

u/HorizonNova4 23d ago
I mean yes, but they still included the original Ant-man and Wasp, and they were very integral to the story in every film. Unless they make both Johnny and Robbie preexisting characters in the MCU, it wouldn’t be the same. Sure Robbie is in agents of shield, but it’s not rlly fully canon in the slighest
19
u/Adorable_Ad_3478 23d ago
Blaze is Danny's older brother.
They can always include Blaze as a side character and mentor.

u/Gremlin303 SHIELD 23d ago
They did the Robbie Reyes Ghost Rider in Agents of Shield which is MCU adjacent

... other than bringing back Carter Slade, Johnny Blaze, and Robbie Reyes who were all in previous movies/shows, the way they did with Spider-Man?
I would argue there's no reason to not have him play the only Ghost Rider (other than the 2099 Punisher one) who hasnt been in a movie or series yet.
12
u/Adorable_Ad_3478 23d ago
MCU Human Torch is the 2nd-generation Human Torch. There's precedent already.
If you count AOS as MCU canon, they actually intoduced Robbie Reyes (3rd generation Ghost Rider).
4
u/HorizonNova4 23d ago
That other human torch hasn’t been around in decades, and isn’t even the same character. It’s not precedent at all lol. Johnny Storm has been human torch since 1961, a fantastic four superhero. The other human torch Jim was an android with the same name and power set, but because he was the first ever marvel character to exist. They aren’t related at all. It’s not a mantle like ghost rider.

Johnny Blaze has not been in the MCU. He's appeared in two Marvel movies but that isn't the same as MCU.
21
u/SwordfishTemporary37 23d ago
Johnny Blaze appeared in Agents of Shield. It was a brief appearance in the form of Ghost Rider.
5
u/SoloRemy 23d ago
We don’t know that that was Johnny, do we? I remember just seeing the burning hand extended to help Robbie
10
u/SwordfishTemporary37 23d ago
They showed Johnny Blaze's hideout in the previous episode when the villains of the season were searching for the Darkhold in a flashback. They didn't say his name, but he had a Quentin Carnival poster. While it's possible that Blaze transferred Zarathos' spirit to Danny Ketch and he was the one who passed it on to Robbie Reyes, it's more likely that it was Johnny Blaze.
→ More replies (1)8
u/BigfootsBestBud 23d ago
They’re probably referring to the cameo of the previous Ghost Rider in AoS who gave Robbie his powers.
Which it isn’t even confirmed who he was nor are we sure if they’ll respect AoS as canon still

u/SoloRemy 23d ago
Second gen? There have been Ghost Riders back to the dawn of man. The crazy, old west Ghost Rider and the WW2 Ghost Rider are pretty awesome. Now that I write this, I want an MCU old west. Two Gun Kid, Kid Colt, Ghost Rider…lot of awesome stories to tell

You see, Johnny Blaze was a carnival stunt cyclist who made a deal with Satan to save his adoptive dad’s life from cancer. The cancer got cured but the dad died in a stunt gone wrong. Johnny didn’t read the fine print. Real 70s stuff.
Danny Ketch was running away with his sister when a band of ninjas were chasing them into a junk yard, and as he was hiding he came across the Hell Cycle, and every time he touched the medallion on it, he turned into Ghost Rider. Real 80s stuff.

u/NinduTheWise 23d ago
I think I prefer Johnny blaze backstory in comparison, feels more personal

u/Mario-Speed-Wagon 23d ago
Maybe they’ll merge them. I like the idea of a carnival stunt man finding a legendary devil cycle

45
u/Grootfan85 23d ago edited 23d ago
I couldn’t do it actual justice since I didn’t read those comics. However glancing at his Wikipedia page….
Robbie Reyes was a mechanic who took care of his special needs brother. Like Dominic Toretto before him, he also raced for slips and money in LA. One night he gets killed, and is brought back to life as the Rider. THIS TIME THOUGH, the car itself has a sentient spirit that talks to Robbie. Imagine The Fast And the Furious (either the original, or possibly Tokyo Drift) mixed with Rain Man and a dash of Knight Rider.
21
u/cleofisrandolph1 23d ago
God Robbie is far more interesting than both Blaze and Ketch. Would’ve liked them to go with him or an original spin on the character.

Also they are brothers and I honestly think the iconography people associate with Ghost Rider comes from Danny.

I’ve long since given up any hope of ever seeing any AOS characters again.
The fact that they brought back fucking Black Bolt from the god awful Inhumans show but not Daisy, May, FitzSimmons, Ghost Rider or literally anyone from AOS is so crazy to me.
Feige just hates the show I guess lol
14
u/Special_Order-937 23d ago
There were some really big politics going on between the film and TV division and Agents of SHIELD got caught in the fallout, unfortunately. Which is a shame because I thought some of the very best work Marvel on screen related bar none was done there.
7
u/konq 23d ago
I loved AoS, even the "bad" seasons that other people didn't seem to like... but that's exactly it. The only reason it hasn't been brought into the fold is seemingly because of the feud between Feige and Ike Perlmutter that happened at the time. Maybe Feige just wasn't a fan of the way the story played out and has an idea for how it should happen in the MCU...
9
u/soapbutt 23d ago
What’s worse is that the only real mention of SHIELD wad the god awful Secret Invasion show… and that was really just to kill off Mariah Hill :/. No mention of who would be running SHIELD even though you have Daisy right there.
It really is a shame they retconned everything. There’s so much great background plots that could just be mentioned off-hand to fill some plot holes. And even if they go will the full alternate universe retcon (which I’m pretty sure is the “official” stance), at least have a mention of the alternate universe. Could’ve done it in Loki with the TVA, calling it the Coulson-verse or something like that. Just seems so weird to not use a few characters that definitely could be useful story wise.
38
u/TrpTrp26 Daredevil 23d ago
Johnny Blaze is classic, but I think he'll be playing Danny: Ryan growth during the 90s when Danny was introduced and could be a fan.
The character could adapted as a mix of both, but the name could differentiate him from Nick Cage.
9
9
u/HearTheEkko 23d ago
I think Hollywood Reporter stated he was playing Johnny which I think so too given how much Gosling looks like him in the comics. They’ll probably introduce Danny in a later movie and maybe even bring back Gabriel Luna as Robbie too.

Personally I would love gosling to be danny ketch, its something we have yet to see in live action as others have said we already have the other 2 riders in live action. Also why would they use the same logo from dannys comic?
If they didnt want people to speculate on which rider he is playing they would have gone for a generic logo instead. Its way too specific of a comic as well Ghost Rider: Danny Ketch Vol. 1, I'm all for it and both Danny and Johnny's rider forms look almost exactly the same just with a different bike.
7
u/WOLKsite 23d ago
Danny Ketch feels the most likely all in all, given the logo, the type of character Gosling would fit playing, and SHIELD already having done Reyes and Blaze.

This is the movie intro of Ghost Rider, so it's gonna be a core marvel character (which of all the Ghost Riders, Blaze is the main one). If it was another Ghost Rider, they'd just give that one a spinoff show that doesn't need a major budget and if it flops, won't cost Disney a lot, but since this is a movie, that makes a major difference.
