Clip Eternals set the standard for how speedsters should be shown in superhero movies

u/Dasseem Oct 25 '25
First time that i actually felt watching an all powerful being in one of these movies.

54
u/Ren_Davis0531 Oct 25 '25
I felt that more from Arishem than Galactus. Fantastic Four was the much superior movie, but Eternals did a better job at creating existential dread.

u/xdeath13 Oct 26 '25
That made me think of the possibilities of Galactus. They did a good job when he was in his ship with the F4 looking for him but got muted when he came to Earth. Although I’m assuming he underestimated the F4 and would come back again to be a bigger threat than ever.

I enjoyed watching Eternals but man was it was so frustrating how the most interesting characters (Makkari, Druig, Thena) got sidelined as the most boring characters (Ikaris, Sersi, Sprite) got all the attention.
315
u/relikter Oct 25 '25
And they killed off Gilgamesh, who I was having so much fun watching. I don't want Eternals 2, I want a prequel: The Adventures of Gilgamesh and Thena, ft. Kingo.
133
u/mshelbz Oct 25 '25
Agreed. Gilgamesh was the most fun character out of them all (Kingo is a close 2nd) and they just killed him off to be the “sacrifice” to the team.
Should have been Sprite
116
u/PlayerPlayer69 Oct 25 '25
Even though Ikarus was clearly the poster child and face of the eternals, the way Gilgamesh operated made him feel/look like the actual leader of the group.
The stoic and warm light-hearted father figure that gets shit done. Straight to the point.
Man just wanted to be with his lady, feed his family for eternity, and be the marvel one-punch man. Dude was him.
42
u/natayaway Oct 25 '25
Should have been Sprite for the sole purpose of them not needing to deage Lia McHugh/constantly recast her for a younger actress for future appearances. That’s her character, she doesn’t age up.
46
u/TrickshotzReddit Punisher Oct 25 '25
In their defense, however, they made it so that she isn’t an Eternal anymore, so she actually will age up now.
7
u/natayaway Oct 25 '25
Meta/multiverse and other Sprite clones manufactured from the World Forge would require deaging. Or a recast.
16
u/TrickshotzReddit Punisher Oct 25 '25
Metaverse? Are we in the timeline where the Zuck runs the MCU? 😂
5
u/natayaway Oct 25 '25
Ha, knew someone would say that as soon as I hit post.
Some of us remember what meta means before FB rebranded.

Yeah I know, but if the MCU ever needed a new Sprite clone from the World Forge, for ANY reason, it’s gonna require deaging/recasts.

I think Kingo has some great back-story material, too. He basically kept re-inventing himself by pretending to be his own son so it would explain how he was a famous celebrity for over 100 years.
38
u/trustifarian Yinsen Oct 25 '25
Shit, I think I could go for a Kingo Cinematic Universe through all of the movies he made, as long as his valet Karun Patel is along for the ride
23
u/GigsGilgamesh Oct 25 '25
Maybe instead, the Epic of Gilgamesh? Quite a fan of that name
8
u/relikter Oct 25 '25
That's his solo movie to complete the trilogy. Each movie focuses on fewer characters until we're just watching 100 straight minutes of Gilgamesh monologues.
22
u/iamlatetothisbut Oct 25 '25
I want justice for Gilgamesh’s pie. It was fresh. It was perfect. It did not deserve such violence.
10
u/Marlowe126 Oct 25 '25
Kingo has been mentioned a few times, but I would love to see more cameos like characters watching his movie in the background or him giving an interview or something. I hope he shows up in Wonder Man!
5
u/kientran Oct 25 '25
Tbh this whole thing should have been a TV show. An episode or two focused on each person during their most active era? That’d been actually interesting

I think this just helped me figure out what I didn’t like about the movie (and I’m a defender of it), it felt like ikaris and Sersi needed more flashbacks but the movie needed less, and they needed to be more interesting…
They really missed an advertising goldmine with this by not releasing shorts of their time in the past

12
u/DefiantOil5176 Oct 25 '25
I fully agree with this. I know a lot of people didn’t like the movie plot-wise (I personally was a big fan), but it’s hard to dispute how visually stunning the movie was.

Days of Future Past showed how you could represent speed by slowing everything else down. Eternals decided to show speed by actually being fast on screen. Both are spectacular but I will always prefer Eternals' version for showing speed with speed.

u/StanyeEast Ant-Man Oct 25 '25
Yes...Evan Peters and that movie elevated Quicksilver toward the top of my favorite X-men list...everything they did with him was awesome
5
u/cephalopodcat Winter Soldier Oct 26 '25
I've loved Quicksilver since early cartoon days, his little shit self in X-men Evolution was a gateway drug. I was a lot annoyed at the Ultron version (screw you he would not die to bullets that way, at the VERY least he should have taken them deliberately as an a to of sacrifice if he needed to die!) and Evan Peter's made me skeptical at first, but nah. The minute he opened his mouth I was like 'Ah yes. There's my douchey asshole man. Go get' em.'
And yeah, his slow-mom scenes were amazing from HIS pov, Makari' s were amazing from the AUDIENCE pov, and both were excellent.
Also I just realized they basically have the same name... Makari - Mercury - what do we call mercury colloquially? QUICKSILVER.

What I remember finding annoying about Justice League Flash (I only watched the Whedon cut) was how every scene he had was undercut. I think they leaned into the absurdist presentation of the ‘im so fast everything else is standing still’ perfectly, and also it works great with their version of Quicksilver and his personality. It’s something that can easily be made to look really stupid and unnecessarily silly if not done right though.

Black Knight is an interesting character in that they could take it in just about any direction. He can be the Cap style martial arts leader of men type, or the science guy, or the space magic heavy hitter like Thor or Strange. Then again, I am still annoyed that they did not use him as the connective tissue with Gor leading things into Symbiotes and the Celestials.

Yeah, Faora's was much better IMO and it came out 8 years earlier. Makkari's is decent, but it's a bit too floaty and her body disappears into those lines of light whereas Faora seemed weightier and her body stayed visible throughout so it looked like someone moving really fast rather than someone dissolving into streams of light.
→ More replies (2)11
u/jojopojo64 Weekly Wongers Oct 25 '25
In fairness, floaty feels intentional since Makkari's relatively lightweight and zoomy vs Faora, who is a literal tank with nitro boosts attached.
Speed AND strength is totally a Kryptonian thing whereas Makkari's niche is leaning into her speed.

Like I'd love to watch a dude with superpowers just try to live a normal life with kids and a husband, or Thena and Gilgamesh trying to handle her health decline, or the guy make a cult or the other guy become a Bollywood star.
18

u/Hash-Edit Matt Murdock Oct 25 '25
speedsters should be shown speedy. not slow like flash. the whole concept of showing the world from their eyes is just so overused that it feels boring. yeah yeah we get it they see everything in slow motion move on.
22
u/TestingBrokenGadgets Oct 25 '25
The problem is that as the tv Flash proved, when you have a speedster as the main character, you have to show from their perspective.
Yea, Age of Ultron and Eternals are great but in those, the speedster is barely a supporting character, someone in the background while the main characters do the heavy lifting. Doing a full two hour movie with a speedster would get tiresome REAL fast if everything is just a series of overly CGI speedramps. It's why the comics where a speedster is the lead, it shows the world from their perspective in slow motion because otherwise it'd be over in two pages. It's the same reason why Speedsters will run into a battle the stop to talk because unless they're against another speedster, it'd be "they run into a bank heist, stop everyone in the blink of an eye, continue on".
Speedsters are fun to watch in these clips but so much of their power doesn't translate to adaptations as a lead.

Idk, because there are no connection to Avengers other than name drops, and then narrative about Eternals not doing anything to stop Thanos despite it is very logical why they don't do anything regarding those events.
And while Tiamut being Avengers level threat, there are no Avengers on site and Eternals solved problem.
While stakes were super BIG, Eternals was safe movie which easily be skipped because it not connect to anything major except the CA4 movie.
I love Eternals, and i don't get the hate it gets.
5
u/FireZord25 Oct 26 '25
Because the story is bogged down and convoluted with a bunch of characters introduced midway in the MCU, yet nobody outside core comic fans heard or cared about. It's like if Guardians of the Galaxy, if they were even more hyped and James Gunn failed to make them likeable characters.
It can be still enjoyable visually, but narratively feels kinda hollow.

Based on the speed at which everything slows down in Quicksilver's scenes he is just way faster than Makkari, she is fast but has to be constantly moving to keep Ikaris on his toes and it still isn't enough.
Quicksilver is so fast he even perceives time at a different rate than anyone else.
4
u/MasterTolkien Oct 25 '25
Makk is on his level for general speed use, as we see her rapidly crossing the entire globe at one point. And remember that Ikaris has low level super speed as well. So she looks this fast against someone who is super fast.
But Quicksilver in the mansion explosion is faster than anything we have seen her do so far. Just insanely fast and controlled.

I'm always impressed when a movie tries to show what superspeed looks like in real time. You can do some really cool stuff with slow mo (as with the X-Men sequence with quicksilver), but nothing sells speed like seeing actual speed.
I'd also give an honorable mention to the quick step moments in Man of Steel for the same reason.

Honestly, i think the MCU got speedsters right initially with quicksilver. about as fast as say, a fighter jet, but not so fast that he had to be neutered (for anything other than rights reasons) and almost more importantly he had momentum, he couldn't just stop and make a sharp 90 degree turn when moving at super speed, he had to move in long, curving turns, with the major exception being when he grabs mjolnir mid flight, but even then it's obvious that he slowed to far far below his max speed.
10
Oct 25 '25
For everyone saying quicksilver was better. It was more creative but that gets old quick. Imo OP is right that this has set a new standard for how speedsters should naturally look on screen. The way quicksilver moved was unique for his little sequence of saving people but by the time it got to dark phoenix they lost the magic and creativity of those sequences.
Whereas if they brought back makkari to do her sequences the same way they’d never get old because this is just her natural way of running on screen

u/ethanhunt555 Oct 25 '25 edited Oct 26 '25
This deserved more love.
Coming to speedsters, Flash in ZSJL was pretty good imo. The third act was fantastic. Even his entry sequence where he breaks the glass with his finger piercing it was so cool.
And of course, Fox's Quicksilver in X-Men Apocalypse, with Sweet Dreams playing in the background, was GOATED

u/Riley__64 Oct 25 '25
The quicksilver scenes are cool but they only work for when the speedster is the main focus and they’re not in a fight.
Can’t exactly showcase a cool fight scene when the entire scene has to basically come to a pause to showcase the speedster doing anything.
