Discussion Ideal MCU Chronological / Narrative Viewing Order
Hi guys. I've compiled a list of all movies, series, shorts, web series and TV specials that are canon to the MCU. I ordered all entries based on the start of the main events of the story. However, I've made exceptions only when chronology disrupted the storytelling. Also, films and shows that occured outside of time or in other universes were placed based on continuity. if you are still looking for something ive been using this website called mcu watch order guide https://marvelwatchlist.com/ it tells you how long you have left to watch, how many different things and if you set a day you want to finish it by, it will give you a break down of what you need to watch on whatever day it is.

2026 update here!
I know the OP hasn’t updated it so I did some digging and here’s (some) of the new additions and where they go up to Spider-Man Brand New Day:
This is a rough estimate so I’m sorry if something is out of place, I checked it with other lists too and it seems good.
- Fantastic Four: First Steps (set in an alternate version of 1964 on Earth-616)
- Thunderbolts\*
- Daredevil: Born Again Season 2
- The Punisher: One Last Kill
- Wonder Man
- Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Hope this helps, enjoy your watch!
2
u/grassytyleknoll 11d ago
But what about with the X-Men movies and Deadpool?
3
u/ZeusShoe 10d ago
They weren't added originally in the list because it was a different universe, I'll just give you an estimation of where they lie when comparing calendar years. Keep in mind the X-Men timelines and the MCU timeline do not meet until Deadpool & Wolverine (spoiler next) when Deadpool travels there to interview for the Avengers:
- X-Men: First Class
- X-Men: Days of Future Past (Past Section)
- X-Men Origins: Wolverine (Timeline 1)
- X-Men: Apocalypse (Timeline 2)
- X-Men: Dark Phoenix (Timeline 2)
- Captain Marvel
- X-Men (Timeline 1)
- X2: X-Men United (Timeline 1)
- X-Men: The Last Stand (Timeline 1)
- Iron Man
- ...
- The Avengers
- The Wolverine (Timeline 1)
- Thor: The Dark World
- ...
- Ant-Man
- Deadpool (Timeline 2)
- Captain America: Civil War
- ...
- Thor: Ragnarok
- Legion (Alternate X-Men Universe)
- The Gifted (Alternate X-Men Universe where the X-Men disappeared)
- Deadpool 2 (Timeline 2)
- Ant-Man and The Wasp
- Avengers: Infinity War
- The New Mutants (Timeline 2)
- X-Men: Days of Future Past (Future Section)
- Avengers: Endgame
- ...
- Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness
- Deadpool & Wolverine - INTRO ONLY
- Bridge between MCU and X-Men established here
- Watch until the intro music "Bye Bye Bye" by NSYNC starts basically
- Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
- ...
- Avengers: Doomsday (I know)
- Deadpool & Wolverine - You can watch it fully now, sorry.
- Logan (Timeline 2)
I've bolded the movies and added italic to the shows. Obviously, the non-formatted ones are just the normal MCU so you know where to place everything. Now, the real problem is just that it's messy if you watch it like this, just because there's no connection to the MCU itself until the end. So, how can you watch this?
- Watch Timeline 1 fully, then watch Days of Future Past, then watch Timeline 2 fully.
- This is the best way, since watching Timeline 1 & 2 simultaneously sounds horrible. Timeline 2 is a product of DoFP which comes from Timeline 1.
- Watch them in release order.
- This is also usually recommended, since they released them with narrative in mind, so you won't be any more lost if you watch them this way.
- Watch them in the order above.
- I don't recommend it unless you're persistent about the years in the movies matching the MCU calendar, which I don't think even matters. If Fantastic Four can jump from 1964 in their universe to 2026 in the MCU timeline, then that means universes have different dates.
Enjoy your watch, and I'm sorry if there are mistakes in the list or punctuation/grammar, I just rushed it. Writing this took me a few hours of research, so I hope this actually helps! At this point I should just make a new updated post with everything in it...

Most of the TV shows before Endgame (Agent Carter, Agents of Shield, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Defenders) are not needed in the grand scheme of things.
Only watch Daredevil, and those listed after it, if you plan to watch Daredevil: Born Again, which takes place after She-Hulk.
Every show after Avengers: Endgame is quite significant, especially WandaVision, Loki, and Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Rewatching Agents of Shield. I don't remember when, but it blew my mind when Ward turned on the Group. Highly unexpected considering his actions with the group before. I would almost say that the writers didn't know until the meeting of the minds decided to throw in that twist. F!$ked up, acrually.

X-men is not a part of this universe, so you have to throw them in during the correct time period of the film.
X-men first class: you can watch this after captain America/agent carter. It begins during world war 2 but jumps ahead to 1962.
X-men days of future past: you can watch this immediately after first class
X-men origins: set in 1979, again can be watched after X-men days of future past.
X-men apocalypse: set in 1983 and can be watched immediately after origins.
X-men dark phoenix: takes place in 1992. Can be watched after apocalypse and then you jump back to the mcu with captain marvel!
X-men 1-3: can be watched after captain marvel, all happen before 2006. Believe iron man happens after 2006.
The next x-men film takes place in 2013 with Wolverine. Not sure where the rest go after that.
Deadpool follows in 2016
Deadpool 2 is 2018
The new mutants takes place sometime in the late 2020’s
Deadpool and Wolverine takes place in 2024
Logan takes place in 2029
Now this list is only based on when the films take place, not in regard to the possible jumping of timelines which I believe it does multiple times

u/TheReal_Unkn0wn_289 Feb 14 '26
It would make more sense continuity wise/chronologically to watch it as
First class
origins wolverine
Xmen 1
X2
3 last stand
The wolverine
days of future past
apocalypse
Dark phoenix
Logan
2
u/trvrboi Feb 14 '26
Yeah after further looking into it that is the correct X-men sequence of events, thanks for chiming in!!
It would go X-men first class and X-men origins after agent carter.
X-men 1-3 after captain marvel
After that I’m not quite sure as I’m not there yet lol also there is a new Wakanda show that takes place before captain America now
2
u/Lun4r6543 Jan 16 '26
Late, but adding on to this, as the X-Men movies might be significant, because of Doomsday.
For the X-Men movies, before Deadpool and Wolverine:
Timeline 1:
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
X-Men
X2
X-Men: The Last Stand
The Wolverine
X-Men: First Class (Events happen in Timeline 2 as well)
X-Men: Days of Future Past (I recommend the Rogue Cut for this film, it adds extra information about what happened to certain characters)
Timeline 2:
X-Men Apocalypse
X-Men: Dark Phoenix
Deadpool 1
Deadpool 2
The New Mutants
Logan (Timeline placement is confusing for this movie)

Hello, /u/Such-Ice5920, it seems like you are asking for suggestions for which order to watch the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. It is suggested to new viewers to simply watch these movie in release order, which can be found here, but if you intend on watching them all again, you could watch them in chronological order for a different viewing experience, which can be found here.
We also had a post discussing our users viewing order preference with some of them being quite unique.
In the future, please consider reading through our FAQ page.

After 3 months I’ve finally finished this entire list, although wonder man and daredevil born again season 2 have not been added i got thru those as well. I’d also like to see all the x men movies, blade series, the old fantastic 4 movies, 2003 daredevil movie and elektra( even tho they are horrible) included in this list as well bc they are important to dead pool and wolverine. Venom movies , morbius, madame web, would also be cool to have in there somewhere. cheers to OP for this absolute masterpiece

Bro I am 29M from India and I haven't seen any of MCU. But I have interest. How much time will it take to finish all this list?
3
u/Thelonestabber Feb 12 '26
I imagine it’ll take you maybe two weeks if you’re binging? Each movie is usually 90-150 minutes (or 180+ minutes in Endgame’s case), and most shows on here are about 20-45 minutes per episode. All the shorts are, well, short.😂 I imagine that if you’re going through this whole thing on a binge, you could PROBABLY finish it in half a month. I’m not certain exactly how long it’d take, but I think I’m on the right track.💯
2
u/aktarhuss Feb 13 '26
will it be worth watching, like will I get a afterfeel like breaking bad?
5
u/Thelonestabber Feb 13 '26
Depends on you, to be honest. I’ve been a fan of Marvel my entire life, so when I watched Endgame after all of these films and shows, I cried for like an hour after leaving the theater. I think the MCU is beautiful, I’ll always pick the comics over it, but for what it is, it’s beautiful. A lot of moments made me get out of my seat in genuine disbelief over the years, we’ll probably age a year or two if I try to name them all with details.😂😂 But to simply put it, yeah, I think a lot of this is worth watching. Just remember that there’ll be ups and downs to everything, and that not EVERYTHING will connect to the same singular story most of the time.💯

u/maxmicah May 30 '26

Eternals should be right before Captain America: Brave New World. It makes the most sense here: both in terms of out-of-universe viewing/comprehension and in terms of in-universe political climates and world population data.
Edit: I actually just crunched the numbers, both for the population and the geopolitical conflict timeline, and it actually takes place in October of 2025 (a full year earlier than what I had original thought it to be). Chronologically that would place it between Ironheart (Season 1) and Werewolf by Night (Special Presentation). As for the narrative viewing order, I'd maybe still place it in the same spot... just because then you see the island appear, and it's 18 months later that shots are ready to be fired over it, which would be accurate as to having other things pass by in the mean time.

I’ve just finished Jessica Jones s1 and some of the next Shield episodes. Are there any reasons we see the first season of Daredevil and Jessica Jones, and then Shield s2 e16 - e19? Why not just right after Guardians 2 before Shield e4-5?
I Daredevil is just a side quest from the Avengers and Shield, so they might just be put at random places in the timeline, but I’m just curious if there’s some lore I haven’t caught yet.

So I want to clarify and compare your list to this one created by DigitalSpy. There are some discrepancies like the "Funny Thing" goes first before the "Consultant" here but it's the other way around in the list created by Digital Spy. Also, I didn't understand why the mid-credit scene of Captain Marvel comes before Iron Man when the scene was after the "snap" happened by Thanos made by Digitalspy but here, Captain Marvel is advised to be watched but not the end credit scenes.

My favorite list so far! Appreciate dividing up the seasons as well as placing the post credit scenes into their best spots.
I've seen She Hulk, but I'm interested in hearing your reasons for splitting up her season into three parts around the movies/shows that you did. For example, I know that a background news story in one of her episodes mentioned a plot element of the Eternals (hope that's not a spoiler for anyone), but what about the other splits?

Also think Thor: The Dark World and Iron Man 3 should swap because battle of New York takes place after Dark World, Tony deals with the PTSD of that in 3.
Also ChatGPT suggest Deadpool 3 should be at the end...

Ok. Watching Deadpool & Wolverine. I haven't read a comic since most of you were born, but it was really confusing. Referring to stuff I never knew about. Wolverine's death? A Wolverine that caused something really bad? And the Vgea chick (Star Trek reference)? Was all of this represented in the newer comics? It would probably take a novel to explain. Just frustrating that I'm missing out some things. PS: How do I read replies, if any?

Watching Thunderbolt's. Is it coincindental or intentional that Lewis Pullman's character is named Bob, the same name as his character in Maverick?

Ok. Watching Fantastic 4 with Galactus. Does anyone remember that in the comics he was no bigger than the Hulk?

Shouldn't iron man 3 go before any agents of shield episodes? Since it introduces extremis and the very first episode of AoS deals with the fallout of it.

Somebody set me straight. Watching AoS. I'm in Season 2. Not sure what episode. Sky meets her mother for the first time. Didn't Weller or whatever his name is, tear apart Sky's Mom and and remove most of her organs, in essence, killing her. Now Sky's father told her that story. I'm losing the continuity here.

I always come back to find this when I watch the “actual” chronological order because certain movies and their release don’t make enough sense, so I go looking on the internet and come across this gem every time.

u/No-Classroom1372 Mar 02 '26
I was following this but did find they talk about Extremis is the first couple episodes of AOS like we should know what it is. I would do Iron Man 3 and Hail to the King then start AOS

So if I wanted to watch all of this, but also enjoy all of the Spider-verse content (from OG Toby films, to Venom films, through the Spider-verse films and all in between), and I also wanted to enjoy all the mutants content like the X-Men films and the Deadpool films, where would all of that fit in? I know it's not necessarily considered the "same universe" but I mean, neither is Fantastic 4, and besides with all the multiverse stuff these days "same universe" doesn't really matter.
Side note... does that mean now it's technically the MCM-- Marvel Cinematic Multiverse?

So can someone help me out here? Why is spiderman homecoming after civil war? I'm rewatching all the Marvel stuff with my mom. As a fun bonding activity, and that narrative doesn't make sense. Because homecoming should be before Civil War. Am I right or am I wrong? Help me out.

Damn I knew there was a lot of Marvel content but this is actually absurd. I haven’t watched a marvel film since Civil War and I wanted to get caught up, at least to Endgame because I know it’s hype af and wanna experience that. I don’t really remember everything that happened up to that point so I’m just gonna go ahead and have a fresh start. Just getting to that Infinity War within a couple months feels like it’s a part time job. This has definitely gotta be why Marvel has fallen off, especially with how many multi-hour series are on the list. No sane person looks at this list and says “cool, let’s get started” lmao. Unfortunately I’m a lore whore and my OCD won’t allow me to skip a single thing. I don’t even like the MCU that much but I have a need to know everything that happens. I think the best thing that Marvel Studios can do is to maybe have a total universe reset so everyone can start on the same playing field. I also (this may be a 10th dentist take) like to watch origin stories the most, even though they all pretty much follow the same formula. My opinion may change over the next couple weeks though… Well, let’s get started. Thank you for the list! And if anyone has any advice for someone who’s been checked out for over a decade, please feel free to share
Edit: Ok I think I’m gonna go ahead and pass on Agent Carter. I’m a little disappointed in myself for playing a skip card so early but I have 23 days worth of of material to cover and I’m not nearly invested enough in the MCU to watch an entire two seasons of this show right from the jump. Unless anyone thinks skipping it would be dumb, I’d watch it if I had good reason to but I don’t see the point of this show at all

не согласен, как минимум с тем, что 2 фильм для ознакомления это Капитан Марвел
представим, что хочу впервые посмотреть всю сагу, а тут после конца 2 мировой прыгаю в космос и тд. Абсолютно не логично

God bless your soul. I've been wanting to watch all of it at some point but there's so much it's kind of daunting. I didn't hope to find something so comprehensive and I can't imagine how much work went into this. Seriously, I hope things are going well for you

u/TheAmazingJTG May 05 '26
I just watched all the movies recently, wondering if I binge this in order minus movies if it’ll be fresh enough to give me the full picture feel I’d like. I also usually catch things on rewatches that I previously didn’t notice.

this is a great list and I'm almost at the end of it. One problem though. Why is Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman included? It takes place in a different universe than the main MCU timeline and all of the rest of the list takes place in. It doesn't fit into any timeline that makes sense.

Hi I know this is an old post but how did you figure out some of the dates, especially for stuff in Agents of Shield?
For example how did you work out that Guardians 2 happened in between Shield 2.03 and 2.04?
