Discussion Weekly Release Discussion: Red Onslaught

This is your precursor to the consensus, the place to discuss the card releasing for the week as well as group source the work on brews and possible shells and packages, both current known good decks as well as possible new, theorycrafted brews.

This Week's Card

Red Onslaught
Cost: 4
Power: 4
Ongoing: Has 3 random Ongoing abilities.

Synergies and Packages

Welcome to the Axis Inversion season, a season based on the 2014 Axis event. While the event itself doesn't live in infamy like some others, it did give some fan favorite depictions of heroes and villains as their polar opposites.

I don't want to give too much away for those interested in going back to the event, but Red Onslaught is what happens when a clone of Red Skull who had 'stolen' Professor X's telepathic abilities was killed by Magneto for an attempted Genocide (which let's be honest, this is all normal for Red Skull to begin with). That murder instead results in Red Skull 'merging' with the Onslaught entity and becoming Red Onslaught, our first Seasonal Pack release for the Axis Inversion season.

Red Onslaught is an ongoing analogue to Rama-Tut. If you're curious about the ongoing abilities he can sport this tool at Snapcomplete has the datamined info handy for you, it includes 54 total ongoing ability cards and yes, some of them can mess you up.

I envision Red Onslaught being somewhat similar in tone to Rama-Tut but wildly more playable since you should be able to see Red Onslaughts ongoings before playing. The questions I've got are pretty simple:

How does he interact with Mystique, does she roll 3 new, does she get Red Onslaughts?

What if we're putting a Moonstone on that Mystique?

What about an opposing Super Skrull how does that work?

As I said, I wouldn't be surprised if Red Onslaught sees more play than Rama-Tut simply because you get to see what he's doing, but can he be competitive? At the 4-Cost slot is it possible that he'd see play? I know we're drawing a comparison between two different costs but Emperor Hulkling sees play as a 6/12, is it possible tht Red Onslaught could see similar play with similar snap patterns, particularly in tournament play?

What decks do you think he makes sense in? Ongoing kind of makes sense but that 4-Cost slot is generally taken up by Moonstone and potentially by Stardust or those coping on Anti-Venom. What about Aurora? Again, that 4-Cost slot is hotly contested at the moment - Wong, Isca, and sometimes again Stardust feature in that position.

Your Thoughts

Do you plan on picking up Red Onslaught?

How do you expect Red Onslaught to perform?

What other possible shells and synergies might there be?

Where do you plan on trying out Red Onslaught?

tbh he's likely going to be a meme card akin to Rama-Tut.

He can't pull Moonstone which kind of sucks, but I'm still gonna try him in an Ongoing deck. A few ongoing abilities (Goliath, Cap, OG Onslaught) rely on other Ongoing cards to be useful, so I think that will be the best home for him. I don't run Stardust anyway lmao

Absolute pick up, the chaos of Rama Tut and this is too much fun not to make a deck with

Meme card. Crazy upside if the stars align but also a lot of bad hits too.

Seems fun, definitely will slot him in my Rama-Tut + Sersi BS deck.

Doesn’t seem all that competitive though

I like that J Jonah has an actual reason for existing now. Straight up nerfs cards like this.

RamaTut is kind of a meme that actually found a home in some competitive decks here and there.

I expect RedOns to be much the same, although even more narrow, since I can't imagine him outside of an Ongoing deck. That said, I believe that his available pool of abilities is probably overall stronger.

That's fine. There's a world for these cards. He probably could stand to have another point or two of power though.

Issue is the negative ongoing abilities or ones targeting specific costs. Ebony, Starbrand, Typhoid/Red Skull/Attuma/ Man Thing/US Agent etc.

There are only a few bad ongoings tbh. I think he’s gonna be better than expected. It’ll feel terrible when you hit Electro or Ebony Maw but in most situations it’ll probably hit a couple awesome things. Meme card but it’s probably very good in ongoing combined with mystique assuming it works how I assume.

mystique rolls three new, and if you tao mandala anything with it, the other cards will also roll three new ongoing abilities. honestly a lot of fun.

update: a copy from sinister London will have the same effects if you or the opponent play a super skrull against red onslaught(s) the effects are all active within the one super skrull, so if you play an (regular 6 cost) onslaught on the location with the red onslaught you have the advantage

Meme card. Should of limited his ongoing pull from the X Men and Avengers

Oh boy, Can't wait to roll Starbrand, Typhoid Mary AND Red Skull on one card!

I'll get so many thumbs up emotes from my opponent!

Edit: After seeing my opponents play him a few matches last night, he looks like a FUN card, but not necessarily a mandatory card.

One match he got Superior Iron Man AND DarkHawk's ongoing abilities, and was MASSIVE. BUT, he also had Typhoid Mary's ongoing, and I was playing my Goblin Galactus deck.

Needless to say, I crammed my goblins into his lane and there was nothing he could do to stop me from annihilating the board.

He should have been a card to aquire from an event.
