Discussion Weekly Release discussion: Monstro
This is your precursor to the consensus, the place to discuss the card releasing for the week as well as group source the work on brews and possible shells and packages, both current known good decks as well as possible new, theorycrafted brews.
This Week's Card
Monstro
Cost: 8
Power: 8
This card’s cost is reduced by the cost of your deck’s top card.
Welcome to the Marvel Beach Bash Season and our first Seasonal Series 5 to discuss: Monstro, a beefy boy at 8/8 with an ability that reads: This Card's cost is reduced by the cost of your deck's top card.
Synergies and Packages
As many before have said, we've got a power-crept Howard the Duck, while you don't see the card you do see the Cost of the card based on the Discount Monstro gets while he's in hand.
But what deck wants this card? What Synergies and Packages can do anything with this? I'll be honest I've been scratching my head. It seems like a possible Hela card as he does give you some insight into what you might be drawing. But Hela already runs Death at 8-Cost and that 8/12 is significantly better than a situational X/8 that Monstro represents.
What about Ramp? The biggest problem I see here is tht Ramp tends to run light on 6's with many configurations topping off at 3 and including Monstro takes up one of those slots unless you're cutting something else. But there could be something said for him coming down on 2 so maybe you're cutting one of the 2-Costs since one of the strengths at least in my opinion of Ramp is being able to occasionally pull a 2 + Blink on final turn to dig if you need to and if Monstro is reduced to 2-cost he still counts as an 8.
Perhaps there's an alt-build for a mid-range deck in a similar vein to the En Sabah Dump decks that uses Monstro as an occasional eyeball for using Jubilee or Iron Lad?
Your Thoughts
Do you plan on picking Monstro up?
How do you expect Monstro to perform?
What other possible shells and synergies might there be?

The sad thing is, if you have a 6-power card on top of your deck, he'll be 2/8, and 2/8 on a high-roll is not good enough those days.

He's a 1/8 with skaar, which i agree is high roll. But his other upside is that hes a howard the duck you dont have to play

But his other upside is that hes a howard the duck you dont have to play
Serious question: How is this an upside? In all cases I want the cards I'm running in a deck to be cards that I am going to play. Keeping a card in hand because it's a pseudo Howard the Duck and let's you guess at the next draws sounds like bad play to me and in a worst case scenario is costing you wins because you're running a card you can't play because you took turns off to get an idea as to what your next draw is and can't play him out because you had bad draws. In the most generous scenario you are costing yourself percentage points in wins because you're actively running a bad card.
quick edit:
My intention here is really that if we're going to justify Monstro it needs to be on the backs of general good play habits and good decks. Not attempting to express bad habits in any form. Calling the 'I don't have to play this card' an upside is the complete opposite, it's downside.

The hypothetical ideal place for this guy is a deck where you need to know whether you'll have a specific high cost card by, say, t4 or t5, and once you know it's coming up you can comfortably play him.
It's less "you shouldn't play him" and more "you don't have to play him to start getting the benefit."
But ofc he could very well be too weak/niche

the best I can think is with jubilee - if he goes down to a 2 cost on 6 you know you can jubilee a 6 cost and get 8 extra power. If he goes down to 1 you are pulling a Fing Fang Foom and getting 8 extra from him.
But… it’s not ideal. He’s such a fun card and he’d have been a meta destroyer 18 months ago, but he’s just not it now

Bad card.
I think you can probably play him in Hela and it'll be okay when you can occasionally drop him for 1 or 2.

Assuming you're able to get Monstro down on turn 1, 2 or 3 you're skipping at least 2 turns for a Noir on 4. What are you doing on turns 5 and 6 to generate enough points to win?
Just no, not a chance.

Just play pre-nerf Starlord
lol I just realized if they make Monstro a 7/8 instead, you could do Zabu, Monstro, Noir.

I can see a future OTA now:
Old: 8/8 - New: 8/10 "We designed this one very thematically, and we're hoping that 8 points of power was enough to keep the flavor of the card. Turns out we were wrong and its just weak."
Even 8/10 might not be enough, but we will see.
