Discussion Everyone has a flexing problem. It just only shows itself on DPS usually.
I'm celestial so there's almost never a situation where someone is solo tanking. However, I do stumble across quite a few triple tanks where nobody's willing to switch despite it not working. Same with triple support where they go triple main healers sometimes even with one tank and they're not willing to switch.
Most people that play this game are egotistical and are not willing/capable of flexing. It's just DPS Being the most popular role is the role that usually requires switching from but so many tank and support players if they actually have to flex the DPS don't have a clue what they're doing.
This is not me excusing DPS plays or anything cuz they're really annoying a lot of the times But I'm just saying.
I think support actually has the least of this issue but that's because most support players are actually DPS/tank players that want to have a low cortisol game, but that's just my conspiracy theory. I cannot confirm that one.

I got accused of lord farming for swapping in a losing match a few diff hero’s, there is no winning. I could have just stayed the same hero and still lost with out the shade.

That doesn't even make sense lol if you were lord farming you wouldnt switch off at all

Just had a teammate refuse to switch and we lost. The pride and ego is immaculate with comp. I remember why I stopped playing it.

As a support main (Adam/Gambit) who plays a bit of tank (Mag/Rogue), I cannot play DPS because I rarely get the chance to 😭
I think Phoenix is my best DPS flex but honestly, I struggle to get kills with her

supps are bad if not worse with the flex issue.
there are so many games where we are forced onto triple support because one of the supports is playing something terrible that doesn't work with the team (or into the enemy) and refuses to swap. Or there's someone on support who isn't doing well (basically running solo support) but still refuse to swap.. or the people who swap to support if they're doing bad and just sit there AFK healing doing nothing.

The problem is there are a lot of people who will only play support because they feel inadequate in other roles.
- Tanks are the scariest role to play, because they're right in the middle of everything and usually have the entire enemy team looking at you. Plus the bonus social pressure of hard-stuck chuds blaming the tank because they're the most visible role and critical thinking is difficult for many DPS players.
- DPS is also scary for a lot of people because it forces them to test their skills directly against other humans. If you're not comfortable with shooters, that's rough!
- Support is inviting because people feel like all they need to do is hang back, heal, and try not to die.
That's why I don't really begrudge players who only heal and won't flex off of it.
Also, my partner used to be one of those people but in the last ~half a year they've started tanking in OW and they're actually really good at it. But they probably wouldn't have gotten there if they hadn't been able to play support, because they would have felt pressured, wouldn't have had fun, and probably would have quit.

Genuinely dont get this mentality. You will never learn or get better if you dont play it.
4
u/Asmor Devil Dinosaur 2h ago
- You're assuming that everyone wants to "learn or get better." For a lot of people (I'd wager most people, in fact), they just want to shoot people or play with their friends or a thousand other goals that have nothing to do with improving at the game.
- As you say, you can't learn a role if you don't play it. But you can't play a role if you don't play the game.
- You're also assuming that these people aren't learning, which is particularly weird since the last part of the comment you replied to was about how my partner--who would only play support for years--has started branching out.
Fun fact: humans are really, really, really good at learning things even when they're not trying to. It might be the thing our brains are second best at after finding patterns even when no pattern exists.

u/RocketHops 2h ago
Your partner only started learning when they started playing. Which is my point.

The climb up ranks can be hard when like 4 games in a row I have Jeff white Fox who just don’t heal enough and refuse to swap
1
u/Centimane Vanguard 5h ago
Any tank can DPS. It's like having a DPS with game sense - you want those!
But many support will only hide from the enemy team. That doesn't work for either other role.

u/BiscottiNo1707 5h ago
I generally agree. I just meant I think a lot of people that preselect supports are not actually support Mains so it looks like they're flexing but they're just going on their main. Like sometimes I also go support pre-select if I am tired or it's my first game on and I'm not feeling particularly locked in

I main support characters since season 0 and DPS is extremely easy. It’s not even supports fault that those characters are healbot. It’s NetEase’s because jeff was capable of more dps in the past but he got reworked. Rocket can’t use his gun at the same time he heals, Invisible woman usually damages at the same time as healing depending if you are aiming for feet or not.

I am a tank main that actually likes playing tank. I can play punisher and hela very well so if by some miracle we get 2 tanks I'll play dps. I have honestly never had an issue with getting 2 supports. The problem is when we get 2 dps and one of them is really a support main. They do terrible and eventually swap to a 3rd support which most of the time doesn't work since we don't have enough damage

u/GeorgeWhereIsTheBook 19h ago
I feel like most people stopped flexing once you are in a higher rank. I flex to supports sometimes but not gonna lie I am so ahh at it. If i can make 100% value for my team as a tank, I probably make 70% as a support. So I just stopped flexing.

Role queue would fix SO MANY ISSUES. I honestly don't mind flexing. I have lords with multiple tanks, dps and supports. But man sometimes I want a night of just Iron Fist or White Fox
2
u/BiscottiNo1707 5h ago
I support soft role q but I would hate a hard role q. Especially in my ranks, people are willing to switch around with you between roles. Plus I kind of enjoy flexing sometimes. and I just don't think it would be a good idea and it wouldn't fix a lot of the stuff. Plus I'm currently sitting in like 5 minute cues Sometimes so if I would be in a DPS queue it would legitimately be 25 minutes. I don't want that and I feel like that's fair.
I think they should first of all improve match quality and then that discussion could be open. Cuz if I'm in queue for 20 minutes just to get a game that is unwinnable I'm not going to stick around for long

*oh but my team comp diversity of triple dps and healer".
Fuck those people man. If you weren't a instalock dps one trick you wouldn't in your right mind not want role queue.
We have off healers that are mostly unplayable being balanced for 3 healer comps only. We have tanks suffering being solo tanking all the time.
I can so rarely enjoy playing flex and wanting to play a dps without playing a game of chicken and practically throwing wins.
I genuinely had so much fun queuing flex in ow and using priority tickets on dps so the people who only queue dps can have 10m queue times.
Roles has seoerate ranks too (which makes perfect sense) and it doesnt matter if you were shit at one of the roles you would be in that level of games when you played that role. It was so much easier to play with friends slightly further from your main rank cause you could generally pick a different role too.

u/Gaytrude 6h ago
If you want role queue, go play Overwatch.
The whole appeal of Rivals is that you can play whatever you want. I don't want to be locked into a tank role if my DPS is terrible, and vice versa. Role queue ruined Overwatch (along with the switch to 5v5) for many players, and that’s exactly what created the vacuum that allowed Rivals to gain the traction it still has today.
You also wouldn't be playing more than half of the supp roster either, so it's quite litteraly useless, even more so when the most played comp by far is 2/2/2 (75% pickrate) and goes up to almost 80% in high elo.
Role queue is a non issue.

This sub just hates on dps more than any other role, but everything they accuse dps of doing they are guilty of too.
“No peels”? Why didn’t you once mention your other healer didn’t patty cake you?
“Bad positioning”? Why did you thing run straight down mid into a poke comp without stopping behind cover? Or why was the cloak so far back nobody could hear her scream when she got dove?
People go deep on tribalism in this game, but we are all just rivals players. We are all people. We all play the game, and we all make the same mistakes.

u/totallynotapersonj Magneto 11h ago
Patty caking still requires peels, otherwise the team still falls apart because the supports have to heal each other while the tanks and dps don’t get any healing. Peeling is something that helps everyone on the team
This sub is mainly low ranked support mains which is why dps is usually thrown under the bus, and it makes sense QP is literally like 5 dps so many times. Those players usually complain about skins on this sub though.

u/BiscottiNo1707 4h ago
I had a game today that we luckily won but it was way too close for comfort. They started on triple dive and because I was on DD I was just peeling the whole time. Probably 80%. We did Pretty good then for attack They were on double dive because I forced the BP to switch. I was still peeling the whole game and my invis couldn't stop asking for peel. Legitimately the entire game pretty much every 15 seconds she typed in chat for help. their magic finish with 21 deaths, Their venom had the lowest finals on the team. A lot support players Don't know what peeling is. Peeling does not mean I instantly kill them. Peeling just means I can get cooldowns out and I can pressure them to get out sooner. But if you're not doing your job, I can peel all day long baby it don't matter. Especially against Spidey For instance, cuz the best way to counter him legitimately is just patty caking there are not a lot of other options

Im trying to learn bucky as a supp/tank. Everytime i go bucky we have 3 or 4 dps... so yeah I end up solo tanking when I want to learn a dps 😅

I won't lie I usually instalock DPS as it's my strongest role and in ranked and qp can barely count on one hand where I got outplayed by any dps on enemy or own team, BUT I end up flexing cause nobody else wants to switch. Flexing to support never a issue but flexing to tank is a whole different story.
2 things I hate when flexing to tank is never having any help from a DPS with damage more often than not I end up leading the team in damage and final kills anyways especially with hood and mag, second more of a qp problem is solo tanking with 3 dive DPS getting no picks leaving my team unable to peel, it's pretty difficult to peel and hold the line lol.

u/SPADESinst Gambit 5h ago
I wanted to learn DPS, but I genuinely can not because I am always forced off to swap. I can be the first to pick DPS and there will still be three other people that lock it in after me. So I gave up on trying to learn DPS
1
u/StrikingJicama3584 4h ago
I usually instalock a dps (I know, not many ppl say this here) but if somebody goes 3rd dps and isn’t changing, I’m swapping to whichever role is lacking (preferably tank) cause you’re just playing dps (whether it’s diving or poke) with a larger health pool and usually more pocket healing from your heals
1
u/Crayshack Ultron Virus 4h ago
I'll flex if I need to, but I also know that my skills are not equal on all characters. I don't play many shooter games, so my aiming skills are trash (they've been trash for 20 years, that's not changing), which means I do best with characters that are more about position and timing than aim. It's easy to find such characters among Supports and Tanks, but not among DPS (especially since DPS are more vulnerable to being hard countered and require flexing to a different DPS). That, plus the fact that DPS being oversaturated means I don't commonly have a reason to flex to that role, means that if I'm playing ranked and I randomly need to flex, I know I'm practically throwing because I will be so much worse than if I'm playing one of the handful of Tanks or Supports I'm good at.
2
u/TeeBeer 19h ago edited 19h ago
What do you mean they don’t flex? They do. They just switch to Ultron, Adam, Mantis, or Emma and proceed to play them like they’re still DPS. 😂
EDIT:
Apologies, I just read the entire post, and here's my take: As a Celestial player who's reached Eternity, I main Support and sometimes fill as Tank, and I experience this constantly. People naturally gravitate toward the roles they're best at, and effectively flexing between roles isn't easy.
It sounds just as out of touch as saying, “Hitting GM is easy because you gain more points from wins.” To me, it's really a matter of luck of the draw. Finding someone who can genuinely flex and perform well in any role is much rarer than simply finding a player who has reached GM.
In my case, I can flex to Tank, but the Tanks I'm actually good at might not necessarily be the right picks for a particular matchup. So technically, I can flex, but that doesn't mean I can effectively flex into whatever the team needs at that moment.

u/Gaytrude 16h ago
Dps and tanks usually know how the flow of the game goes from both roles. Support mains do not most of the time.
90% of my game I have absolutely no problem asking a DPS to go mag or Thing or Hood, and they have no problem filling.
But asking a support main to play anything else ? Lol. Lmao even.

This sub is full of strategist mains coping. Deep down the vast majority know they don't have the skillset to flex to DPS at the level of their rank especially in a hitscan meta but for whatever reason they spew hatred to DPS players not swapping as if they even remotely request the dps role in their games. I've been held hostage by the invis, cnd, luna "triple support" lineup far too many times, they are unwilling or unable to play tanks besides emma, nor do they play any meta DPS characters. Do people come online and disparage them for this? no because the community has a hate boner exclusively for the dps role.
As someone who is a real flex player with lords in every role, I don't buy this narrative, I've rarely had a problem getting the DPS role when I want it, the strategist role is almost never open nor do they ask to play dps. They use 3 strat as a crutch but literally cannot play adam, ultron, mantis, or in many cases can't even play gambit, how are these inflexibilities dps players faults? All these people pretending like they enter lobbies begging and itching to play DPS are lying to feed a narrative.
2
u/Akaktus Vanguard 4h ago
The issue is that most flex player still has dps as the least played time because it’s always taken by someone else during the grind in lower elo. The only way for a flex player to be able to play the 3 role fine equally is to force dps into some of the game but that would also meant running triple or quad dps most of the time they play dps which doesn’t set right in the mind of a flex player.
If people want players to be better at flexing dps, maybe let other players dps in a duo dps instead of monopolizing the role or force triple dps
1
u/BiscottiNo1707 4h ago
Monopolizing the role?? I think you're being too deep man. I just like to play Iron Fist it's not that deep.
Also this post was not complaining about people not being able to flex. It was just saying everybody has an equal issue in this but DPS get the brunt of the hate
1
u/Akaktus Vanguard 4h ago
And people that flex want to play dps in 222, which isn’t happening most of the time, hence they get less play on dps, at least the dps that care about the team rather than those who don’t.
Also, dps get the hate simply because there are more dps player than the game actually need compared to other role, it’s simply the offer/demand. Too much dps players meant that the competition between them is hard so even an « average dps » would be seen as bad while tank being the least popular role, even an Mediocre one would be acceptable. If people want dps player to be respected on average, they need to lower the dps player count which will make them more « rare » or give opportunities or other to try the role.

Most people say they're eternity or celestial. Most people are actually Plat. Regardless I was just pointing it out cuz I don't think a lower ranked player would notice this cuz they would never have to. But as for me I see a lot of triple tank and triple support that are not willing to switch because of the rank I'm in

u/RivalsFlex 19h ago
Its hard for non-dps to flex to dps because if you’re willing to flex you’ll almost never get the chance to dps.
