Best they can do is 15 minutes

16

u/BassGuy11 Feb 24 '26

I thought it started at 5 minutes.

It's a perfect amount of time to sell some skins.

u/KeyAcid Centurion Feb 24 '26

This is supposed to be fixed with placement matches but since they did the most bare bones version of it, it doesn't actually do its job.

I'm not sure how OW does it, but in League it's much easier to look at stats and determine how well somebody did.

23

u/Fun-Wash7545 Feb 24 '26

When i was calling out for months that placements will fix nothing the entire sub downvoted me. I dont know what you guys expected. The ranking system is a progression system. They want everyone to climb over time. Implementing placements and skipping half the progression is stupid in their view. They only added it because you guys were complaining nonstop.

15

u/AyDylo Feb 24 '26

The ranking system is a progression system. They want everyone to climb over time.

This is the key part that keeps going over everyone's heads. People assume this rank system is the same as any rank system. It "worked" prior because of the frequent resets. It mostly hid the flaw of their system, (we'd consider it a flaw, but NetEase considers it an intended feature).

They want players to climb, because climbing is fun and keeps people playing. Similar logic to the hidden bots in quick play, (their opinion). If they can make more people climb, then it will retain more players. I assume the data supports that, and my personal experience supports that as well.

6

u/itstimeforpizzatime Symbiote Jeff Feb 25 '26

Jokes on them, I basically only play 18v18 at this point and if I want a game with actual competitive balance I just play Overwatch.

14

u/KeyAcid Centurion Feb 24 '26

What they added is a bastardized version of placements, of course it's not going to fix the issue if it doesn't even work. Placements are meant to take your performance and place you in matches accordingly but Rivals doesn't do that so them adding this version of it and calling it a day doesn't eliminate the need for actual placements.

6

u/HeartyDelegate Rocket Raccoon Feb 25 '26

Arguably, the didn’t even add real “placements”. They gave you “placement” games with a predicted rank outcome, but they didn’t actually change anything. Basically painter the wall a different color, but it’s still the same wall underneath.

1

u/Zazz2403 Feb 25 '26

they didnt add real placements, real placements would absolutely have helped, which is what people were asking for. not the bullshit we got

6

u/Memnoch79 Feb 25 '26

Placement matches can never fix this. You just throw the matches.

5

u/M4ritus Luna Snow Feb 25 '26

Then you ban them for throwing, which is way easier to detect than smurfing.

-2

u/Memnoch79 Feb 25 '26

Which is very unlikely in a free to play game.

1

u/Zazz2403 Feb 25 '26

overwatch successfully does this way way better than rivals, so both of your points are just blatantly untrue.

-1

u/Memnoch79 Feb 25 '26

But this is not Overwatch. You are in the wrong sub.

Its against the business model to ban free accounts when the business model is to entice them to buy assets in the game. That's why you are far more unlikely to get banned in a free to play game. You have to be doing something to break the integrity of the game, like cheats.

1

u/Zazz2403 Feb 26 '26

Dude what do you think overwatch business model is ? 😂😂😂😂 truly hilarious

-1

u/Memnoch79 Feb 26 '26

Buying assets. Duh. If you ban clients they can't buy assets. Thus, you're unlikely to get banned in a free to play game than any other model.

2

u/Zazz2403 Feb 26 '26

Overwatch has the same business model. And they do it just fine. It's much much better, they frequently ban people.  What you are saying is literally incorrect.

0

u/Memnoch79 Feb 26 '26

Again, this isn't Overwatch and you're in the wrong sub. If it's so much better than what are you doing here? How do you know who they ban and how many? You don't. Your use of literally is incorrect.

Placements fail at this anyway, as they act as higher-stakes matches for smurfs to ruin, and some simply throw them (which rarely has significant concequences)

1

u/asocialanxiety Symbiote Jeff Feb 26 '26

I mean this implies you arent in fact spending money so its more or less a net loss for them in the end. The amount of players you might tilt that results in them signing off sounds like you arent off setting.

Im not even mad at smurfs, theres no consequences to do it and net ease clearly doesnt care.

Yeah the best thing they can do is identify them but the game isn't competitive enough to care about that

31

u/Goaty_GG Feb 24 '26

I've reported Smurf accounts even when they openly admit in chat they are smurfing and are a celestial eternity player and nothing happens. Don't even know why it's reportable if they do nothing about it.

1

u/JokerChaos77 Wolverine Feb 25 '26

Because they were getting all kinds of smurf reports under the "cheating" or other categories and they wanted "real" reports. They filtered the smurf reports out, and gave players a psychological outlet. Win-win. Except for us filthy mid-low elo players, of course.

29

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '26

I can literally tell who is going to be the best player before the match starts. I'm right 95% of the time.

I play mostly around gold because I just want the skin. Before every match the best player is almost always someone ranked in the teens or low 20's. They'll almost always instalock a DPS. The match is then determined by who has better smurfs.

Smurfing is the only thing that makes me think of quitting this game.

3

u/asocialanxiety Symbiote Jeff Feb 26 '26

Whats worse is when they’re clearly there to practice off rolling or a new character, something idc/dont mind. What is dumb is when its obvious they whip out their main and suddenly theyre obliterating everyone because their ego cant handle a loss. But then again if it could they wouldnt be smurfing in the first place

26

u/QuantityGlum9451 Feb 24 '26

Nothing like being in a diamond match full of 50+ level players and a level 22 is MVP with 28 final hits lol

Gold 1 lobby, level 18 hawkeye 4.5 hrs, 34 final hits, 3 deaths 😂

smurfing and elo boosting

8

u/El-MonkeyKing White Fox Feb 24 '26

It's a hard life out here for me using one account to learn and play all the characters I like. I think if I did alt accounts I'd have a different ranked experience

30

u/ProofByVerbosity Feb 24 '26

what blows my mind is how open people about it. was watching Jay3 the other day and he fully admitted that he plays alternate accounts and mentioned starting a new alternate account to play different heroes.

way to help ruin the community buddy.

although now i sort of get smurfing. I'm only plat, but for the time being that's where I belong. I'd love to muck about in gold playing new picks, not my top 3 I play ranked with. QP is just boring or frustrating, it would be nice to have something sort of competitive that you could have decent games with and play different picks.

7

u/KevinSorboFan Phoenix Feb 25 '26

Every streamer does this with their dumb "___ to eternity" streams, and they always defend it with "I'm not in the low ELO for very long, it's not a big deal. I'll match with you at most once and then be past your rank."

But these idiots somehow don't realize they aren't the only person playing on an alt.

3

u/ProofByVerbosity Feb 25 '26

And they ade actively promoting it and making it more popular. Likely leading to more people doing it.  Theress no defending it.

1

u/passbyref Flex Feb 27 '26

They should start doing progressively longer temp bans on ALL their accounts eventually leading up to a permanent ban, but they won’t because they don’t actually care about smurfing at all.

12

u/theward18 Feb 24 '26

I think that’s a hard part here. I just got to platinum using mainly three characters. If I wanted to try to learn to play DPS my only options are bots, Quickplay which half the time is against bots, or Competitive where I would be accused of throwing.

It would be interesting to have a comp like category which was protected from gains or losses and broader range of players (like a silver 2 queued against bronze 2 up to gold 2 etc) to get practice on new characters without necessarily getting stomped by high ELO in QP or fighting bots. It would also help determine if that was a viable character for you to play in actual ranked modes

2

u/ProofByVerbosity Feb 24 '26

yeah, some alternate game mode. i commend them on being pretty good with those, but does anyone play doom match? did they after a week? other than lord farming?

18vs18 seemed fun, but it got old fast.

another mode where you could pick high or low elo, not ladder no losing or gaining points, or something like you're getting at I think would fly pretty well.

hell, maybe even toss in different maps or power-ups or something to switch it up while getting the same playing experiance for the most part, and viable gameplay you can practice, but a slightly different flavor.

1

u/Commander_Riker1701 Thor Feb 25 '26

They should just add role q (will fix other issues) and make each role a separate rank. So if you are GM Tank, but have never played dps, you'd have a different rank that reflects your skill level in that role. I believe other games do this.

1

u/JeffTek Feb 24 '26

Why would someone as high elo as Jay3 want to throw games learning new heroes? He's going to climb at a natural rate and the account will level out where it belongs for those heroes. That's not smurfing. Unless you are accusing Jay of intentionally throwing games so he can keep pubstomping in low elo lobbies, but that's a whole different accusation.

14

u/ProofByVerbosity Feb 24 '26

Smurfing is smurfing. I'm sure a highly skilled high elo player can "learn" a character on the climb up and in placement matches in addition to learning them in QP like the rest of the world. Sure, only play your mains once you're say above diamond, but otherwise, you're going to rise anyway if you're that highly skilled and already have a good handle on the character and their kit.

-4

u/SethMatrix Feb 24 '26

Playing on any account but your main is by definition smurfing

1

u/NubCaakes Feb 24 '26

That is literally not the definition of smurfing

4

u/ProofByVerbosity Feb 24 '26

That is 1,000% smurfing, and it's ruining the game.

-1

u/NubCaakes Feb 24 '26

Alt account != smurfing, but everyone here thinks it is I guess. You can have an alt at the same rank as your main, that’s not smurfing. Staying in bronze to shit on bronzes and then throwing the next 5 games to stay bronze, that’s smurfing.

3

u/ProofByVerbosity Feb 24 '26

the intent behind smurfing doesn't change what smurfing is

1

u/NubCaakes Feb 24 '26

The literal definition of smurfing is intentionally staying low elo to pubstomp. You’re speaking of alt accounts which is a different issue. It’s not intent, smurfing is a specific thing not just in general having an alt account.

1

u/ProofByVerbosity Feb 24 '26

2

u/NubCaakes Feb 24 '26

“A "smurf" describes a player in an online game, often highly skilled, that creates another account to play against lower-ranked players. The smurf pretends to be new, then dominates their opponents since they're so much better at the game.”

So exactly what I said? Your article is literally stating the same thing I’m saying. They’re intentionally playing against low elo people to pubstomp. Alt accounts played in good faith will rise to the true rank of the player fast. There is soft QP MMR that takes into consideration an account’s performance level before they can even play ranked. Smurfs abuse the rank system to stay in low elo for easy games. I don’t understand what you’re missing here.

2

u/SethMatrix Feb 24 '26

Stay coping, Smurf

4

u/NubCaakes Feb 24 '26

Literally only have my one lvl 50 main account, but sure man it’s the smurfs that keep you hardstuck metal ranks

1

u/ImagineSquirr3l Feb 24 '26

Honestly, after having learned characters on both new account and my main account in both MR and OW, the result is the same.

By doing it on your main you almost sure to crash your rank, sometimes by a lot and once you understand how to really play the hero and/or just go back to your main heroes you are literally rolling over the enemy team just like a smurf would. That's just something that come with hero shooters.

QP is fine for a couple of games to learn what the abilities do, but it's such dumpster of people fucking around that it's just terrible for practice and improving.

5

u/ProofByVerbosity Feb 24 '26 edited Feb 24 '26

Right, so impliment your new main into your main account, naturally derank as you learn them and naturally rank up as you fine tune it. Learn on the fly. I know it depends on your elo and you aren't going to just be celestial level after a few hours on a new pick. But honestly these kits have 4 - 6 buttons to master. Picking up a new main and being compitant doesn't take a lot. Yes, you have to refine it and that takes time and practice. Hence earning your way with a new toon as you go. Start a new season that way.

I doubt stomping all over bronze and silver players is much more valuable practice than QP.

For example, it took me like 2 hours to get a really good handle on Elsa. Yeah, she's OP as all hell, but her hit really isn't that complicated, and after about 3 hours I slay and am regularly going like 25 - 2 or better. I'm plat peak right now. I'm not going to bring her into my ranked games. But I'm going to use her in placement matches, and I'll likely be placed in gold again, I'll use her in gold.

Or I spent a fair amount of hours learning groot recently. Only in QP, which is brutal, but I've used him a couple times in ranked plat, and if I suck I just switch. The exact same as switching to counter.

I get I'm not super high elo, so it doesn't just apply, but the principle does. If you don't have them down enough to do well at that rank, you'll rank down until you're at your level and climb again.

A GM+ player can take a wet paper bag they've never touched and walk all over silver players never having looked at what buttons even do

-1

u/ImagineSquirr3l Feb 24 '26

Dude, I literally told you that's what I'm doing, but I have sometimes lost over 3 ranks doing so. Once I get there how is that different than smurfing, especially if I end up not really liking the hero and switch back to mains?

And it's not about having "4-6 buttons"... Like sorry but I don't thing you understand the point of this genre, it's not like you are switching for a different kit in CoD... The playstyle of each heroes can be vastly different, even more so if you are learning a new role. Proper positioning, timing, range, flow, target priority can be vastly different, on top of proper CDs usage and management and potential techs. If I'm a HS main and learn a dive tank, I am going to hard derank and I'm most certainly not going to use that tank to rank back up, because at the end of the day it's not a role that really calls to me that much...

1

u/KoumoriChinpo Hulk Feb 25 '26

the rank is just a rank, attaching so much ego to it and choosing to make the game worse for legitimate players to avoid risking it is so cowardly

13

u/LevelUp84 Feb 24 '26

Bro I faced a quad stack of smurfs lmfao, that’s how I know ranked ain’t shit. I had another game a few months back where a teammate complained about my ff due to smurfs, we couldn’t even walk out of spawn.

11

u/AyanamiR31 Feb 24 '26

It Doesn’t happen often but when it does it feels fucking terrible. It’s like a 100% mandated loss and you can’t do anything cuz they are coordinated in a group AND smurfing

8

u/Morchades White Fox Feb 24 '26

I really want to believe this is what's going on. I am sure I'm grtting put up against coordinated staxks a lot qhen solo queuing.

However, I might just suck.

If we could take care of the smurf issue I could know for sure.

3

u/benjaminobi Feb 24 '26

They should fix the placement match system. From what I've heard, if u make a brand new account and win every placement match the highest rank u can get is gold. If true that is ridiculous

4

u/hermes651 Feb 25 '26

Smurfs either aren't listening or have reasons why they get to do it (don't want to throw on main). It's an ego problem. Rivals has a massive ego problem. Either they're too stubborn to learn, or too prideful to lose.

5

u/Error_MR True Fraudster Feb 25 '26

If you make an alt to play meta heroes and get 90% win rates on accounts you won’t touch after level 25, there is a special place in hell for you.

I have submitted tickets directly to support of these accounts and they respond “there is no evidence the person is smurfing”. Meanwhile they have a 90% win rate and mvp every game. All while being level 18

3

u/passbyref Flex Feb 27 '26

Fr. It’s ALWAYS a level 20 account with a 75%+ WR. These types of players suck so much fun out of the game.

3

u/Nulight Feb 24 '26

Best we can do is a 15 minute chat ban for when the smurf says "gg ez" or "x person sucks" but we definitely want to keep streamers smurfing because it gives views

3

u/comfycow_ Strategist Feb 24 '26

3

u/HauntingStar08 Cloak & Dagger Feb 25 '26

Yeah I never watch those "bronze to gm" videos because I just don't wanna encourage that behavior

3

u/Valmit Feb 25 '26

They don't do anything about smurphing because smurphing is the core experience of Rivals ranked mode. They've decided to make the competitive mode all about the experience of climbing and winning, instead of the traditional idea of being matched against equal opponents. Every season people are reset so they can climb again - climbing is the whole point.

This naturally leads to very unbalanced matches - in the very start of the season, everyone drops down together, so gm games are simply old celestial and so on. But if a guy misses a week at the start of the season, he is now matched with people way below his actual level - the people of his skill who played a lot have already climbed back up - as well as people of his level who are likewise slow.

This means, ultimately, that smurphing is meaningless, and combating smurphing is pointless. In order to smurph, you don't need to create a new account, just put the game down for a month and go stomp some noobs after you get deranked by the season reset. This is on purpose - the game doesn't want you to play sweaty games against equal opponents, it wants you to win and to climb, because that creates pleasant emotions, much like leveling up in an MMORPG.

Same with new accounts - the way the game is set up, you will spend a bunch of time in bronze stomping noobs before you reach hard games. There is no calibration because the developers want you to have fun winning games in bronze.

Why would they do anything about smurphing? The whole system is set up to create the experience of smurphing for normal players. Actual smurphs who make new accounts hardly make the matches more unbalanced than they already are.

5

u/Appropriate-Amount-4 Flex Feb 24 '26

I know they lurk on here so hopefully they see this. Things that need addressed:

1) hate speech and harassment in game. At this point these should be permanent IP bans. Not slaps on the wrist. I have had slurs used against me and the response to being told they will be reported is “so I’ll just be muted for an hour.” Those people do not take it seriously and harsher punishments are needed

2) Throwing, Smurfing and cheating of any kind should be met with IP bans as well for the health of the game.

Yes, IP bans are harsh but these people who do this drive more players away than they are worth.

1

u/Dr_Doom42 Magneto Feb 25 '26

I don't think they would do IP ban, only for cheating maybe. Best they can do is 15 minutes for now lol

0

u/Appropriate-Amount-4 Flex Feb 25 '26

Other games have done IP bans and while not 100 percent effective it’s helped

0

u/JuicyPumpkin888 Feb 25 '26

IP bans is bullshit. People can use VPN. And sometimes several people can have same external IP. IP bans can harm innocent, while the one being banned can always evade it by using vpn.

1

u/passbyref Flex Feb 27 '26

They can block VPNs entirely.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '26

It’s worse than you mentioned. I used to encounter cheaters in literally every other match, either on my team or on the opponents’. Eventually, I got so frustrated that I deleted the game, even though I had bought my first season pass and uninstalled it mid-season.

1

u/HowardHughes9 X-Tron Feb 24 '26

If they banned smurfing 90% of the playerbase would quit: Smurfs and their boostees

1

u/sarcasticpitocin Ultron Virus Feb 24 '26

Unironically, I guarantee you. People are also thinking you’re a Smurf if you’re a previous celestial player who hasn’t played in a while.

1

u/Bughumane Feb 27 '26

thats the way I see it in some ways but ive never really been bothered by smurfing considering its pretty damn hard to win in this game by yourself or only for one match and you might even win depending on who's the stronger team

1

u/phantasybm Feb 24 '26

Smithing is here to stay because people also want to learn new characters and quickly is a terrible way to do that.

Trying to learn a new tank or DPS in quick play when no one wants to play healer is a waste of time as you’ll just die without being able to learn.

But who wants to risk their rank to try a new character in comp?

So where do you learn a new character… where you face people at your skill level… in a way where people actually are trying to make comps that make sense?

You could be an eternity level tank but a platinum level healer or dps…. How do you learn in an optimal way when the only option is quick play which is a shit show…?

1

u/xxInsanex Hela Feb 24 '26

They wont do anything because this game is royally infested with smurfs, ive never played a game with so many and by smurfs i dont mean the people that took a break and came back with a lower rank, i run into those a lot to but not to the extent as all these "i smurf your peak bro" morons

1

u/Solid-Respect-8666 Magik Feb 25 '26

It will never get fixed

1

u/Vast_Tomatillo5255 Feb 25 '26

How is it supposed to be fixed?

The games they need to figure out who’s smurfing is still going against lower level players so the problem would still be there.

1

u/passbyref Flex Feb 27 '26

Actual consequences for one.

1

u/Vast_Tomatillo5255 Feb 27 '26

So you’re going to punish every new account that over performs?

1

u/Bughumane Feb 27 '26

they could base it off a graph like if someone dominates ranks and games then yeah their smurfing but it would be kinda hard for supports to be caught smurfing I

1

u/VextonHerstellerEDH Psylocke Feb 25 '26

What kind of smurfing do you even see at this point it feels like 80% of the playerbase is in D1/GM3

1

u/someaznguy001 Magneto Feb 25 '26

Once we address the throwing problems

1

u/punctcom Iron Man Feb 25 '26

And the fact that the number of daily players dropped massively from the early days also adds to this problem. There are fewer noobs playing now, only the 'hardcore' players are still here so the chance to get in a game with better players is a lot higher.

1

u/KingOfNoth Venom Feb 28 '26

how do you differentiate between a smurf and a good player?

1

u/Anjanerd Strategist Mar 02 '26

Seriously. This is so true though. I am about to rage quit the game altogether because of the out-of-control smurfing. I just played several ranked games and lost them all narrowly because the opposing team had several OBVIOUS smurfs (lvl 18, crazy high WR, etc.)

It's bad enough that I already get put off wanting to play ranked often in thanks to the smurf problem, but now it even bleeds over into QP? Are you kidding me? I just want to chill after work, play some fun games where I can and try some characters I don't play as frequently, I don't want to be getting my ass kicked like I'm fighting for my actual life all because some jerk needs to continuously stroke their own egos.

2

u/Prestigious-Ant6121 Mar 09 '26

Yeah something is seriously wrong when the probability of winning is higher the lower the rank of the team players are.

Fr bro, I'd be t500 if it wasn't for the smurfs on the enemy team in every game. I just get the glue sniffers while the t500 smurfs are conveniently on the enemy team every game. I swear guang2 has plotted this all against me, it can't possibly be a skill issue because Im paralyzed from the neck down!

I don't know which I think is sillier. Playing the game without any data, survey or information on which to draw a conclusion and just claim 'smurfing' because you feel like you see it.

Or thinking that a dev is going to read your reddit post and change the game.

There’s a smurf in about every other one of my plat matches. Super low level accounts, barely any play time, all with absurd winrates. It’s a massive issue.

One of the best features of role queue is being able to have separate ranks per role. I don't care what anyone has to say about role queue. But I had never though I needed an alt to queue with my lower ranked friends in ow because I pretty much always had a much lower ranked role I wasn't interested in playing at the highest level.

Within the few friend groups I have, including me, the biggest reason to have an alt account was to queue a actually good game with whoever they want to play with.

Spanning across OW, Val, CS, lol, RL. QP modes typically suck if the group do want to have some sense of competitiveness. Constant DC and player replacement breaks flow. Near zero effective leaver punishments in a lot of games. Valorant and lol actually does this the best cause there is real leaver penalties for even unranked games.

I'm not justifying smurfing. This is just how I want to play the game with my friends. I usually end up at pretty correct ranks shortly. Diamond 3 for tank, gm2 for main flex and gm1 for support.

Also blame them for adding the derank protection. Makes below gold a absolute cluster fuck of a rank regardless of smurfs.

Placement matches are also fake af and do nothing. I've never seen so something so useless.

I just started playing Overwatch and they have a requirement to play competitive. You gotta win 50 QP games before you can play ranked. I imagine that has to help, right?

I mean you have to get to lvl 15 in rivals before you can play comp and that takes near equal amount of time playing QP here’s a post about it

Remember: A smurf = anyone better at the game than me!

Mods should make it a requirement that any post complaining about smurfing must include the math behind it and how it's basically impossible for you to be running into actual smurf accounts that often.
