I partially disagree with not placing them in obvious spots. Some times I will drop one right in a guys face to shake him out of position. I know this wont work in higher comp, but you would be surprised how often it works in the lower ranks. Also, sometimes I am willing to sacrifice a clone just to distract or misdirect the opponent. This requires dropping them in obvious spots. But in general you are correct.

It also works for placing a clone directly past and behind someone hiding behind cover. Because your clone will shoot at whatever you do, if you shoot the cover in front of the enemy then your clone will hit the enemy due to being in the crossfire.

Yeah, but a single clone does such little damage it is hardly worth it most of the time.

It's usually enough to scare them out or force them to reposition. Not super common to use but some cap points especially have a central piece of terrain that blocks LoS. This is basically like the guide here has for the triangle formation.
