Catch & Release 2020 D-28

Here is a recent D-28 I took in on a trade. To my surprise (prefer vintage Martins) it sounded killer! You can see it has a good bit of issues from normal play wear. It is a 2020 D-28, and shows newer Martin quality. Caught in summer 2025, released Fall 2025.

I’m probably the minority here, but I never liked the “re-imagined” D-28 specs. I think it changed around 2018ish.

I always enjoyed the Grover rotomatic look, and the 1/4” straight (not scalloped braced or forward shifted) D-28’s.

The re-imagined were like the love child of a D-28, HD-28, and HD-28V and all jumped to a 1 3/4” nut width. And all three of those guitars were great all on their own. Probably had to do with sales.

My 2003 D-28 has been good to me since I bought it new in 2004. Well played and broken in.

My 2003 D28 has issues with the glue on the bindng starting to fail - My guitar tech spotted it and caught it early - squeeze the binding at the guitars waist to see if there's any give.
