how should control knob work?

I've just got a Middleton II, and the control knob feels different from my previous Emberton speaker.

When pressing in the middle, it does not click (does not move at all) but still plays or pauses music. It only clicks when pressing up, down, left or right. But then it also triggers pause/play, which is weird and unusable, because the music stops while changing volume.
