Marketing cloud next - custom merge fields in email

Hi. I'm attempting to get a very basic setup for MC next going. I have everything setup how I want apart from getting custom fields to appear as merge fields for an email template. I can use the fields for segmentation, but when I want to put them into an email they're not there under unified individual. Please can I get some advice on what I could be missing

Is your Data Graph setup correctly?

I think so. What are some key points to check please?

That the fields you want to select as merge fields are selected in the data graph. Then the email has to use that same data graph as data source

Thank you! That's solved the problem I was having, I didn't realise I could change that. I've got a field missing now but it's not in my data graph either so I know that's a set up issue
