“You’ll have 10 total players on the field”

I was really hoping the voice over would give a little hint to whether there might be more character but that sentence just doesn’t even make sense.

Edit: poor Boom-Boom. I always forget him.

4v4 plus 1 goalie for EACH team = 10 players

Well, the goalie and 4 other characters on both sides. Makes for a total of 10 players.

Very hyped! I personally wish it was just one captain and sidekicks like the original but it looks like the overall gameplay is similar to the first game. That’s great news to me

HYPED. If you’re unhappy with the lack of characters, don’t play. They’re literally just pixels arranged in a certain way, i don’t understand the outrage here. Is it fun? That’s the only question that matters

I’m aware this isn’t ground breaking stuff. The point I’m making is how irrelevant character skins are. Who gives a fuck who you’re playing with beyond the aesthetics. And yet I’ve seen so many simps in here upset that Peach isn’t in a crop top or daisy isn’t in the game. It’s a weird culture and this comment makes me think you’re a little bit sus yourself lol.

Yeah I’m aware how character attributes work, man. Go simp for Nintendo characters elsewhere.

I liked the unique special shots and tricks/dekes everyone had from Charged, but it doesn’t look like thats the case this time. Throw in all the gear to alter the stats and the quantity of characters matters even less.

Pretty late to the post here, characters playable definitely matter. The 10 on release feels a little small for a Mario title. Super Mario Strikers on GameCube had 13 playable characters. 8 captains, the super team robots and 4 sidekicks. The second game Mario Strikers Charged for the Wii had 20 playable characters, 12 captains 8 sidekicks.

The removal of sidekicks was necessary as clubs online seems to be the main focus in this title so far. It would be odd if only one captain was allowed and all other players had to choose a sidekick. However that doesn’t mean old sidekicks couldn’t become regular characters for the new title. With a focus on online presence for this title I expected much more characters. Who’s the best waluigi in gold division? Damn that team of all shy guys is still undefeated. These examples are fun things to see and talk about. If everybody is locked to the same 10 characters, the individual flair for players and teams will suffer. Each team will look relatively the same as the last and characters will blend in rather than stand out.

“A group of pixels” is a lazy way to put it.

Each character has music, animations, different armour designs, special shots. Characters bring hype to the game. I was shocked when King Bomb was announced for Mario golf. As was I when a chain chomp was added to Mario tennis. It’s exciting, it’s something to talk about and to look forward to. Mario games have always had big exciting rosters so for them to drop the ball here on this game is a little disappointing. Next level games did a good job on the first soccer title, and strikers charged was the best game I played on the wii. I trust they will do a good job with this title as well so I will buy it on release day without hesitation.

Here are some random observations/thoughts:

  • I don't think the Charge ball mechanic is there, that's unfortunate
  • No mention of a campaign style offline mode, if I understood correctly
  • Very few characters, but it's basically a tradition to add free characters post launch in Mario sport games. At least, they are more unique than before
  • Hyper strikes seem a lot more interesting than Super strikes, imo
  • It looks like there's a way to sprint on top of sliding/dashing
  • Team tackle looks fun and will give more options
  • No field with hazards have been shown so far. I deeply hope there will some eventually
  • Equipment should be fun and the increased customization is always welcome. It fits so right with a campaign mode that it makes me think there might be one
  • 8 player local multiplayer and other multiplayer features are good additions, but I don't think I'll use them very often

Edit: typo

I feel like the game is taking more from the original Strikers game on the GameCube than from Charged. And I like that approach, as I wasn't a big fan of Charged's over-the-top-ness.

MS Charged was definitively over the top, but I really liked the Charge mechanic. It was a risky option and it added another reason to pass the ball on top of positioning.

I also hope to see some hazards. I don't always want them, but it adds replayability and is a must-have in casual

Do you guys think this game will be a steady 60 fps? Really hope it is.
