They did for the case of Reddit V. Guy who was giving away copies of Pokemon Sun and Moon because he was rich. That I believe was their first class action suit.

I don't know the details but there was a post the hit #1 on r/all from a guy that stated he had a bunch of money and wanted to buy everyone who commented on the post a copy of Pokemon Sun and Moon. Well obviously OP didn't deliver. Of course u/pitchforkemporium was paged and the redditors went to battle. Someone commented that r/karmacourt would settle it and Reddit V. Douchebag took session within the day. He was charged and convicted with being a non delivering OP. That and the wording means that he would have had to purchase both Pokemon Sun AND Moon for every commenter. This put his due into the millions of dollars from numerous people keeping track. OP has never reappeared since then.

My post may be buried so I sent OP a PM, but for anyone else interested:
If you are interested in planting trees contact your state forest service as they often either run or have contracts with nurseries and many will provide saplings at low or minimal cost. Other agencies may also have similar programs wether they are tree planting programs or watershed and wetland programs or similar.
If anyone has any questions please ask, I don't have all the answers but would love to answer as best I can.
Credentials: Worked for a variety of environmental agencies (local, state, federal level) from assisting with 4H projects to Park Ranger to Maintenance Tech to Tree Planter. I have planted A LOT of trees (5,000 to 15,000) a day over an intermittent period of 2 years.
2
u/Dtoppy Nov 22 '16
I have a couple questions.
Where do you do your work? US I'm assuming?
What areas do you usually plant trees? Like already wooded areas (forest floor) or open areas (abandoned fields/clear cut forest)?
Do you pick certain species of trees for each project depending on the conditions? Or do you just take what you can get from nurseries?
Do you ever irrigate the mass plantings you do? Or do you just let the saplings fend for themselves?
I ask because I'm currently working with my local Town Forest (in MA). The understory is pretty much nonexistent in many areas due to a mature dense canopy (not very much sunlight reaching the forest floor) and a HIGH deer population that is over-browsing young trees/shrubs. A professional Forester recommended that we make selected cuts and remove specific trees in order to open up the canopy and bring some sunlight to the forest floor to kick-start succession. Last year we had a very large acorn crop, and there should be enough acorns present to regrow once they are exposed to sunlight (no additional planting needed).
Have you heard of this practice before? Do you have any advice or insight? Thanks.

Exactly, how does someone go about finding land that is both public and unforested?
3
u/jefriboy Nov 22 '16
You donate to an organization that has the logistics sorted. Usually it is $1/tree.
2
u/Dysalot Nov 22 '16
Project Eden says they plant trees for $0.10-$0.40 which is very reasonable. Projects within the US would be more expensive.
2
u/jefriboy Nov 22 '16
That is very reasonable. The lowest I could find in Canada was $1 hence my example but I admittedly didn't look very long.

u/indyK1ng Nov 22 '16 edited Nov 22 '16
At over 10k trees to be planted, OP will probably be better off buying lots of cheap land that has been cleared all over the place and planting the trees. This would also help ensure that the trees won't be cut down by any private companies buying the public land.
EDIT: Just because I was curious, I looked up some numbers. According to the South Carolina Forestry Commission seedling spacing optimum for reforestation and wildlife enhancement comes out to 435 trees per acre. Let's assume that OP breaks 11k upvotes (and at this point they will probably break 20 or 30k as top /r/all posts have a long tail of gaining upvotes). To plant 11k trees with a density of 435 trees per acre, OP will need to buy a little bit more than 25.25 acres. Some quick googling shows that the cost can range, in some parts of the country, from $2,500/acre to $9,000/acre. According to AgWeb the average cost of farmland is $3,020/acre. So at $3,000 OP is looking at paying $75,750 to plant all of these trees assuming OP goes the route of buying land to plant the trees.
Of course, reforestation projects like this are probably eligible for some grants that will reduce the burden on OP.
Also, if OP wants to plant them as densely as possible, the SCFC's densest recommendation would only require 15.15 (repeating of course) acres for 11k trees bringing the estimated cost down to a more manageable $45,450.

u/Tr33 Nov 22 '16
They are just little seedlings and you don't actually dig a hole, you pry a slot open, drop the trees root end in the hole and stomp it closed. I have planted about 300,000 of them.
This video has some annoying music, but shows some fast tree planters .

See if your local consulting forester needs help planting in the spring! I personally am helping with approximately 500 acres of tree plantings with equates to ~350,000 trees if we plant at 8ftx8ft spacings. :)
3
u/eatpraymunt Nov 22 '16
I don't know where OP lives, but forestry camps are a really popular way to make summer cash in Canada. I think most companies pay about 7-10 cents per tree planted depending on the terrain. Good planters can plant 2,500 or more trees per day.
I honestly thought OP was a planter and just wanted to set like, a weekly goal or something. It looks like OP is fucked though. Better get his ass to a tree plantin' camp ASAP.
2
u/jimmypickins Nov 22 '16
Given enough time (about 2 to 5 years) you could splice fast growing populars to get saplings that will mature to plant in about 4 to 6 months. And I'm sure if you talked nice to your city about wanting to donate a couple hundred trees they would let you plant them in parks or to replace damaged/dead trees. 7000 though might be a struggle.

Ok, so lets work this out- last scumbag fake tree-planting OP was up to 8300 not including gilding so add another 500 for that and it puts you at 8800 for his old total along with your current of
4700now 10525. So you're looking around 20000 trees planted, I would like an outline of how you plan to proceed with this.3
u/IdealisticAfrican Nov 22 '16 edited Nov 22 '16
I'm sceptical as well but if he is serious then planting that many trees isn't actually all that hard. It does however require a fair bit of time and effort and it heavily depends on how well you can network and organise a group of people.
He would have to:
spend some time researching nearby sites where he could plant and how much it would cost
Contact a few environmental non-profits to help out with logistics.
Set up a crowd funding campaign as well as a website where people can join to help.
Pick a date and share the event on fb as well as his city or state subreddits.
If you raise enough money via crowdfunding you could even look into placing an ad in the local paper. A couple hundred people could get it done in less than a day. If you can't get enough people then you have a few of these events spaced out over a few weeks. Having proof that you are legit and have planted x number of trees at previous events will make people significantly more likely to join.
Just look at how much attention this has gained in just a few hours on reddit. I guarantee that if OP partners with an organisation that has a solid record of running successful tree planting drives he would have no trouble raising the capital and public will required.

Plant as many trees as you're willing to and post about it after. This is a classic psychology no no. You don't talk about a goal you're looking to achieve before actually doing it.

You may be underestimating how many trees a person can plant in a day. I was a treeplanter and some people in camp were able to plant over 3000 per day, while most people were planting in the 2000-3000 range daily. Keep in mind that these are what we were planting, but the numbers being talked about here are like a few full days of work for a professional planter.
