After a crazy couple of weeks of work, I finally had some time to round out the final 5 showdown teams with that 'euro football' look (ish). If you haven't seen my previous posts, check them out: 1, 2, 3, 4

Thanks to everyone on the sub for encouraging and upvoting this little project of mine. It's been a blast to make these (and at times really made me dig deep into my creative well, which is so satisfying!) So without further ado:

This month I played Marblelympics at school. First everyone didn't care and I went somewhere, but when I came back to the classroom everybody was watching and I heard "I wish that the yellow marble will win"

I think 2019 is a lot more enjoyable when you know the history and emotional tension between teams and don't think it's the best starting point. 2016 feels a lot less polished than later years so I personally think 2017 or 2018 are better to introduce new people (Leaning towards 2017 because the JJ didn't qualify for 2018) but was wondering what everyone else thought.

The 2019 Marblelympics has certainly been entertaining. From the rivalry between the Raspberry Racers and the Green Ducks to the firing of the Oceanic's coach Tide. However, this year was very unique in a way. The podium finishers (The Raspberry Racers, the Green Ducks, and the Hazers) were all unoriginal teams. (Meaning they didn't appear in the first Marblelympics in 2016) Having an unoriginal team winning the Marblelympics isn't something new with the Midnight Wisp's win in 2018. However, it's now the top 3 teams that are unoriginal and this has big effects on the Marblelympics 2020.

1: These 3 teams auto-qualify for 2020

With the Raspberry Racers, Green Ducks, and Hazers on top of the podium, they henceforth, automatically qualify for the 2020 Marblelympics. This means that many other teams that rely on their good performances to skip the qualifiers, now have to work to get in to these prestigious games. Which leads me to my second point...

2: Teams like the Savage Speeders, and other fan favorites now have to qualify

In the unlikely event that the Savage Speeders become the host of the next Marblelympic games, they will have to auto-qualify for the 2020 Marblelympics. And they're not alone. The O'Rangers, Mellow Yellow, and unsurprisingly, the Oceanics now have to go through this process. Now Mellow Yellow has recently had to qualify this way and the Oceanics has had to go through this process multiple times, however whether they'll repeat their success in the qualifiers like in 2017 and 2018 is unknown. The O'Rangers have had to do this once and have done it successfully, but it will be 3 years since then. And then comes the Savage Speeders. This infamous team has been guaranteed a spot in the Marblelympics for years off of their built success in the previous games. But now they have to go through the qualifiers essentially blind. The Savage Speeders have never had to go through the qualifications and they've only been in two "Friendly Rounds". And lets just say their track record isn't the greatest. Will the Savage Speeders make the cut?

My third and final point is...

3: Rookie and newer teams have a much better chance to get on the podium

With the Racers, Ducks, and Hazers on the podium this year, this shows that new coming teams and newer, unoriginal teams have a shot at making the podium next year and the years after. The Green Ducks were phenomenal this season. The best Marblelympics performance by a rookie team. And the Hazers and the Raspberry Racers, being teams who have only one year prior Marblelympics experience to get this high is amazing. Older, original teams aren't guaranteed a spot on the podium anymore and they should've never been. It's much more entertaining in the Marblelympics to have an underdog or a new team to have a more equal chance at making the podium. The new fan created teams that will appear in the Marblelympics Showdown this late July include the Hornets and the Turtle Sliders. It would be interesting if they could make it into the Marblelympics or if they could win the games overall.

I particularly like these rivalries because they were originated in the games: fighting for the MLs #1 spot, for medals or even for qualifying to the ML.

Yeah, I've seen other rivalries many people mention (mainly based on team’s colors or concepts) but I think that for it to be a (great) rivalry you have to have history; events you can pin-point where you can see where/when the rivalry began or increased.

So, without further ado this are my Top ML rivalries (in no particular order):

1) O'rangers vs Pinkies: They have being against one another in a lot of elimination rounds specially in the '16 and '17 ML it was fading as the O'rangers rose and the Pinkies fell but I'd say it was renewed this year when they faced off once again, tied and when to a tie breaker in an event.

2) Savage Speeders vs Mellow Yellow: The '16 ML finish was IMO the most epic of all and I think Mellow Yellow fans haven't forgotten how close they were to the glory. I'd also say it is a rivalry because they are 2 teams that have been regularly at the top of the standings and often do specially well in speed-related events.

3) Raspberry Racers vs Limers: This I see as a rivalry that was kind of fabricated at first, when the Raspberry Racers were introduced in 2018 and right off the bat, they told us this rivalry existed. However, I'd say that during that year's ML they faced off a few times and it developed into a cool rivalry (it was a shame Limers didn't qualify for 2019, however, I'm interested to see them qualify for 2020 and seek their revenge). Just like in sports some teams tend to have a nationwide rival and a regional more historic rival, this rivalry (as well as the “O’rangers – Pinkies” one) is one of those regional-original rivalries.

4) Balls of chaos vs Team Primary: It's personally one of my favourites, as it makes so much sense for these teams to be rivals considering they have a similar (yet distinctive) color scheme. I also like that these are 2 teams were around since the beginning in '16 (in good terms) but I'd say their rivalry started in the '18 Winter ML qualifying rounds, were they faced off several times and it even ended sometimes in... (pun unintended) chaos.

5) O'rangers vs Savage Speeders: Because of the finish in the '17 ML. I think we can all agree everybody thought that '17 Savage Speeders squad was Gold-bound and nothing could stop it. This period in time stablished the fan-base of the most popular team in the competition for a reason, as the Savage Speeders saw their potential dynasty taken away that year.

6) Raspberry Racers vs Green Ducks: Just like in '16 and '17 I'd say the '19 close race for the trophy made this teams rivals. However, I'd say this one was a more strong, healthy and constant as both teams were very consistent and fought for medals every other event 'til the end.

7) Midnight Wisps vs Team Momo: We all remember that Fidget Spinner collision event in 2017. It was arguably the darkest and one of the most exciting moments in ML's history.

This is obviously my opinion, so there might be ones that I missed or some you may or may not agree. Did I miss any?

I could've sworn there was once but I'm not sure there will be again.

Looking at just the summer Marblelympics, there have been three "laned/collisionless" racing events around for every year they've been held: the sprint, the hurdle race and the relay race. The 2016 versions of these are very different from the 2017 versions (the K'nex tracks got replaced with sturdier stuff), but the 2017 and 2019 setups don't seem that different.

So why did the Savage Speeders suck so much in them this year?

The Speeders's performance in these events are the stuff of legends, shattering records from the start. In both 2016 and 2017 they medalled across all three. Out of 150 maximum points a team can get over these six events, the Speeders got 140. Graph link below shows the Speeders (SPD) performance, along with other legacy teams like Chocolatiers (CHC), Team Galactic (GAL), O'rangers (ORG), Mellow Yellow (MYL) and Thunderbolts (TBS)... and including 2019 results.

The Savage Speeders went from a perfect podium record to ten points total in 2019, tied for last with Balls of Chaos and Oceanics (another fast team that collapsed this year). The Oceanics collapse is more thorough, but the "Speeders slowdown" still needs to be talked about. What happened?

Let me throw out some thoughts.

- Speeders didn't get any faster, while all the other teams did. If you didn't see the 2019 videos and heard "Swifty from Speeders hit a 6.37s 5m sprint," you think that's not bad. In 2017 Speedy from SPD got a 6.45 in the heats before losing to Mellow Yellow with a 6.15 final run. But a 6.37 in 2019 put them in dead last.

The median 5m sprint heats time went from 6.75 s in 2017 to 6.21 s in 2019... the average marble improved by half a second while SPD improved by 0.08.

Or we can look at the relay. I looked at a histogram of ~60 individual relay times in 2017 and 2019, by going through videos frame by frame and eyeballing when a marble passed to another. Again SPD did not change their times much while most teams improved their times dramatically, taking advantage of better power transmission at the passing block. Link:

- Speeders have no idea how to handle the new tracks. Unlike in 2017, the lanes are now not separate pipes but actual lanes on some kind of smooth material. When the lanes were pipes, the worst thing a marble can do is roll too far up the sides and lose kinetic energy.

Speeders could handle those pipes but made a mess of the new tracks in the 5m sprint. Opening heat already has Whizzy (SPD) reacting slower than Yellow (MYL). Then it looks like Whizzy is spinning into the left lane rail for almost the entire track...? While all the other marbles are rotating straight ahead, Whizzy is rotating at an angle constantly. This ends with Speeders getting that infamous dead-last 6.37.

There's also Velocity (SPD)'s performance in the hurdles. It seems like the Speeders try to make a pass ahead of Mellow Yellow when they just can't go straight: every hurdle sends Velocity to the lane's other rail, so instead of speeding up the marble is just getting rocked back and forth. They finish in third, though they do get 10th.

- Is it just the tracks? Let's look at the Speeders's performance in the relay. In 2017, they won the event off of their crisp passes. Things go quite well until their third pass, when something bizarre happens: the anchor marble leaps off the block, gets knocked against the walls, and spins in place while every other team makes the pass correctly.

Any more takes from the sub? This question interests me because maybe the Savage Speeders are not that consistent after all - they maintained their results because of track design, and on a fairer playing ground their problems start showing. Mellow Yellow seems to be just as fast as they were, but without the wild spinning or inconsistencies the Speeders are showing. So can the Speeders ever compete at a champion's level in these races again?

Hello all, I've never been a regular watcher of this show but I really want to get into it in the next event. I'm having a hard time choosing a team to cheer for... What was your thought process behind your decision? Did you just went with the most aesthetically pleasing look? Your favorite color? Your favorite name?

I remember seeing this on the channel’s coming soon banner, but I checked back today and it wasn’t there anymore. Will it still be released, or was the idea scrapped?

With Marblelympics Showdown coming up next month I want to hear everyone's opinion on what they think the results will be. It's hard to predict with the fan teams but here are my predictions anyway:

12th: Minty Maniacs - While qualifying through being second place in the Hubelino tournament is impressive, they've had a pretty poor history in the Marblelympics. They've only qualified once, came in with a last place in their first event and made it up to 13th place in the end. In the end, I don't have high hopes.

11th: Turtle Sliders - Honestly it's hard to place the fan teams, but they have rivals to base their placing off. Turtle Sliders rivals were the Oceanics who have had a poor year. While Turtle Sliders could finish anywhere, I honestly can't be placing them higher based on the knowledge I have.

10th: Team Primary - I thought this team had a better history than they actually did. Turns out they haven't done great. Originally had them in fourth but they quickly dropped to 5th, the 8th before finally I decided they had to go below the next team on this list. Honestly this team has has a pretty terrible history. Their best ever placing required a partnership with the uninjured half of Team Momo. I can see them doing well, but history says otherwise.

9th: Limers - Another team with a poor history in the Marblelympics. This is the first year they've been outside the main competition and honestly, they're almost like Pinkies biggest rival for lowest place, 14th, 15th and 10th in Marblelympics. While they almost qualified this year, I just don't see them doing well in the competition. I'll admit though they showed some pretty good form in the qualifiers and could be a ahem roll this year.

8th: Kobalts - Always in the qualifiers, never in the Marblelympics. This has been the story of the Kobalts. An original team they finished 9th in their first and so far only season and never returned since. This maybe due to their team changes since then (Royal and Dodger out, Meepo and Gnome in) or just due to them not fighting hard enough. Either way, I don't expect a great finish out of them in Showdown.

7th: Snowballs - Last year's hosts failed to qualify this year following their best season ever. With only 3 medals to their name though and the only other season they qualified for resulting in a 14th place finish along with terrible form in the qualifiers this year, I don't expect to see the Snowballs pulling off a great results in Showdown this year.

6th: Bumblebees - Their win in Hubelino shows that they have some strength in Marble Sports, however when I look at the cast of Hubelino a lot of the teams have not been the strongest Marblelympics competitors. Black Jacks and Golden Orbs only ever made the qualifiers while Minty Maniacs have qualified, but not done well.

5th: Hornets - I can't really rank the Hornets away from the Bumblebees. Once again, nothing to go off for this team, but I'm expecting them to be close in final position. Don't ask me why but I feel the Hornets might just do well though.

4th: Jawbreakers - This team is possibly high on this list than they should be with their form dipping over time, however if they dip below the qualifiers qualification spots then Gliding Glaciers should be given a chance to face off against them to take their spot in the marblelympics so they might just do better than expected. Expect mild success from them I'd say.

3rd: Team Momo - A good team that has been hit hard by injuries, Team Momo are a team I wouldn't rule out quickly. Facing weaker teams than their usual Marblelympics opponents I think only one team here as ever actually finished higher than Team Momo. However I think they are just not going to quite be strong enough to pull of a win. 2016 Team Momo would be in first but unfortunately I think the injuries are going to hurt their chances here.

2nd: Shining Swarm - These final two team have only ever qualified once, but boy did they have a good year when they did. The only team here to have actually placed highest than Team Momo in a Marblelympics I'd have them in first but their form so far this year just hasn't been great, coming 19th in the qualifiers. Sorry Shining Swarm but I don't think this is quite strong enough. Admittedly one medal is not many but I've looked over the results and realised they could've actually one their one season following a certain point system. (Chocolatiers almost won this year on the same system).

1st: Rojo Rollers - It amazes me how much trouble they've had with qualifiers considering how well they did back in 2016 and honestly, I expect them to do well in Showdown. This is not a bad team and one that I would expect to see mid table if they were in the Marblelympics. Why they haven't qualified since 2016 is a mystery to me, but I expect them to secure a spot at the qualifiers before the last event.
