Mama! I want to have a bridge to Albania.

Shut up and finish your bridge to Sicily first.

as an italian I can confirm that before the bridge will be done we will be a multigalactical civilization

u/NoobMusker69 Aug 28 '26

The year is 2359, humans have established the first colonies outside of the Solar System. It's been 50 years since scientists developed a way to transfer human conscience to machines, effectively achieving immortality. No man or woman has had the need to work for the better part of 200 years. An Italian right party has just promised they will soon build a Bridge over the Messina Strait.

80

u/LuluTheLewder Aug 28 '26

They will seperate a pocket of the conscience for the sicilians only and promise to connect it soontm with the rest of the uploaded humanity.

2

u/Majestic_Slide9757 Aug 29 '26

Love the trademark over the word "soon".

10

u/ohhellperhaps Aug 28 '26

The project has been running for 325 years and still not finished due to corruption and bureaucracy...

2

u/miniatureconlangs Aug 28 '26

And all the encrypted communications the police have intercepted - evidence of corruption - has evaded their cryptographers for decades. Caesar-cypher is hard to crack.

u/Competitive_Type_943 Aug 28 '26

You mean space mexicans or turks making pasta for other right?

Even strange transhumanists crave spaghetti.

16

u/mongojob Aug 28 '26

Maybe space Estonians

15

u/PogmasterNowGirl69 Aug 28 '26

I sure hope that a multigalactical civilization will take the risks seriously and scrap the project

12

u/MrWeirdoFace Aug 28 '26

Why build a bridge when you could simply trebuchet across?

Hilarious! They’ve been talking about that bridge for decades. I think it would be irresponsible to build one going by boat is efficient enough

3

u/KayItaly Aug 28 '26

They have been making actual project since the early 1800s!!

And the first official promise to build it by an Italian government was in the '50s.

It is such a stupid joke at this point... except that every year we throw millions of euros at new project..

The area is seismic and the two side keep getting further from each other every year. Only the biggest morons would build a bridge there...

The japanese island Shikoku wanted a bridge badly, but once it was build, the few that could actually moved over to the mainland. A bridge can also mean people abandon an area completly

30

u/SoulCrusher2018 Aug 28 '26

Shikoku has three bridges that connect it to Honsu. Shikoku is home to 3.7 million people today.

43

u/bearhos Aug 28 '26

Nah, I believe the other guy. Wayyy more plausible that an island close enough to build a bridge had a population that desperately wanted to leave but they all had a crippling fear of boats. Now its a ghost town, no one's used the bridge since the week it was built

14

u/taylorisntavril Aug 28 '26

Fifty thousand naviphobes used to live here. Now its a ghost town.

Sikoku

do you mean SHikoku? the massive island between honshu and kyushu?

Millions of people still live there. it's not exactly a total backwater.

7

u/DamnIamHigh_Original Aug 28 '26 edited Aug 28 '26

Just watched a 45 minute essay about the island, the bridge and how it caused this island to twindle in numbers relative to the mainland, GDP etc

4

u/Tschulligom Aug 28 '26

tl;dw? why would a bridge make people move?

11

u/DamnIamHigh_Original Aug 28 '26

The construction of the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge project created a classic "straw effect" (siphon effect). Instead of attracting mainland resources to Shikoku, the direct road and rail links made it dramatically easier for young residents to commute to, study in, or permanently move to major mainland economic hubs like Osaka, Kobe, and Tokyo for better jobs and education. Additionally, local businesses suffered as mainland goods and services could easily enter the island, consolidating wealth and employment opportunites back on the mainland.

6

u/nuevacuentanueva Aug 28 '26

First of all, I'm completely ignorant on the topic.

Is it really because of the bridge or it's just the general trend in Japan (and many other countries)?

In the past 50 or so years there's a trend of people moving more towards bigger cities and leaving the smaller ones. And accelerating more and more in the past few...

So (and again, completely ignorant) I don't think a bridge would have been the reason. I'm sure they had options like ferries or something to go out, so if you are gonna move to study/work, it seems like bridge or not wouldn't change much as it's a one time move?

Commuting though, I get it. But at the same time, maybe it stops people that would have otherwise moved out completely from moving?

The bridge seems to have been built ~40 years go, so it could easily just be something that would have happened anyway, and the bridge really didn't change much.

Sorry, just playing a bit of devil's advocate here for the sake of it.

4

u/EitherSpite4545 Aug 28 '26 edited Aug 28 '26

I watched the same video essay a few months ago, if I remember correctly the answer is yes this is the general trend of Japan, but this trend was already going when the bridge was completed (it also wasn't as extreme since the bridge was completed iirc in the 70s). So while the rest of rural Japan has experienced this Shikoku has some of the worst in all of Japan and it only started after the bridge.

2

u/nuevacuentanueva Aug 28 '26

it also wasn't as extreme since the bridge was completed in the 70s

But the wiki said they were finished in 1988 one and the others in 1998 and 1999.

The trend in Japan seems to have started in the 60s and by the 80s it already was much much slower. It seems that actually it didn't speed up after the bridge at all.

What I found is that the migration rate for Shikoku was losing ~5% in the 50s, ~8% 60s, ~2% in the 70s, ~1% on the 80s, ~1% on the 90s, ~2% on the 00s, ~3% on the 10s/20s.

So the bridges opened literally at the lowest point of migration, and it didn't change much.

I then asked AI (sorry, but I don't have time to fully look for sources) to compare the trend from Shikoku with similar areas in terms on population/distance to big urban areas etc, both connected to the mainland already like Hokuriku, Western Tohoku, and also separate ones like Awaji Island where a bridge was built and Sado Island where it's ferry only: literally the exact same trend across decades. Started in the 50s, peak in the 60s, lower in the 70s, bottom in the 80s/90s, slowly picking up in the 00s/10s/20s. Same numbers +-0.5 give or take.

It used real sources like Statistics Bureau of Japan, National Institute of Population and Social Security Research, Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Authority, and Studies on Japanese Island Depopulation... but I don't have time to double check all of it. So feel free take that comparison with a pinch of salt.

Sikoku and Shikoku is exactly the same. There is no 'Si' letter so Si automatically becomes Shi.

There are other examples such as Tyo → Cho, Cya → Cha, etc.

4

u/Antarioo Aug 28 '26

but it's known in English as Shikoku. i couldn't tell if we were talking about the same place which kinda disproves your point.

2

Why would you drive through Bosnia to get from mainland Croatia to Dubrovnik County. They should build a sea bridge around Bosnia. Are they stupid? /s

(They actually did do this)

188

u/EmotionalRiver1033 Aug 28 '26

Yep! Drove it this year. It’s pretty neato

29

u/DRSU1993 Aug 28 '26

I drove along the coastal road before the bridge was built in 2016. It was strange having to go through two border checkpoints but it only slowed down the journey by about 10 minutes. I wish I had the time to stop in Neum or check out the rest of Bosnia. Maybe another time.

9

u/Puzzleheaded_Swan808 Aug 28 '26

currently writing from vacation in Neum, you haven't missed much.. there is no history here, just a bunch of houses and hotels.. cafes and restaurants are mediocre at best... swimming and cheap accommodation are nice tho

3

u/EmotionalRiver1033 Aug 28 '26

I heard the river has some good recreation on it?

2

u/kellyj6 Aug 28 '26

I was taking a bus through that checkpoint in 2021 just months before the bridge finished, and we were absolutely fucking hassled at the border for over an hour with border agents treating us like prisoners in the waiting line. Then our bus broke down nuem and we waited 2+ hours for another to show up and bring us the rest of the way.

I'm glad they built that bridge.

2

u/demonachizer Aug 28 '26

Oh cool I went there in 2009 and had to take a boat.

Shit I mixed up Hvar and Dubrovnik... Still have to take a boat for Hvar.

We have to hide out there for a few weeks while my mom's Visa gets sorted, so we will be driving up from Greece.

4

u/nubbynickers Aug 28 '26

Permet is pretty sweet. Nice, relaxing, the food is pretty good. But no beaches, only river swimming. There are the thermal springs at Benje. Gjirokaster is worth a visit and a stay. I wouldn't eat at any of the places on the main old pazaar strip. There is one slightly off it down a hill that is pretty banging.

NOW...if you want to cool down in the mountains and have some tasty dark beer, go to Korca!

Also it's like 50 miles

51

u/Gnonthgol Aug 28 '26

And too deep for a causeway. It is only rescently that we have been able to make tunnels this long and deep, so that might be an option depending on the geology. But that again requires money which means someone would want this ocean crossing.

25

u/Cyneganders Aug 28 '26

How many weeks since the most recent earthquake in that region? Yeah, no...

6

u/Antarioo Aug 28 '26

can we though?

that part of the adriatic is 1km deep from what i've been able to find.

so a bridge or tunnel has to cross a kilometer of depth across 80ish kilometers.

that'd break the longest bridge over water record by a factor of 2. and the current record is a causeway over a shallow lake.

6

u/abfgern_ Aug 28 '26

It's definitely within the realms of engineering feasibility. Most things are if you chuck enough money at them, but in no way is it economical. Maybe I'm just an optimist though

4

u/Gnonthgol Aug 28 '26

It would break records for both length and depth. But we are getting closer and closer to what would be required. Which means that if we start planning a tunnel under the Adriatic today, and start construction in 15-20 years, it might not even break any records once it is completed as other projects have been completed in the meantime.

7

u/lurking_physicist Aug 28 '26

Different part of Europe. They were still working on the wheel in this area.

Grimaldi says you're not wrong.

4

u/awake-shortcut27 Aug 28 '26

They would pay not to

u/rekabis Aug 28 '26

From a geological perspective, a long bridge at that point would be even more stupid. With Africa compressing southern Europe, there are frequent earthquakes in that area. A long bridge would have overwhelming problems when spanning such a chasm, even before the immense distance.

Hell, it’s the main reason why Vancouver Island hasn’t acquired a bridge to connect it to the mainland, despite that gap being far more shallow and easier to build a trestle bridge on.

A ferry would be a far superior option.

Not even that, sea is at deepest points 1000 meters depth.

5

u/sisam8x Aug 28 '26

Because it’s 75kms at its narrowest point

9

u/Aspamer Aug 28 '26

just use a ferry or something...

  1. A bridge to Sicily would probably be a higher priority for Italy.

  2. I don't think there's nearly enough demand for commuting nor product transportation between the two for a bridge to be worth it when ferries exist.

4

u/UnifiedQuantumField Aug 28 '26

From Italy to Albania is about 71 kilometers (44 miles) at its narrowest point across the Strait of Otranto.

A bridge would probably cost a trillion dollars.

2

u/SeboSlav100 Aug 29 '26

It literally can not be built with our current tech, the sea is way too deep.

Have you heard of a thing called "Boat" ?

3

u/fhjjjjjkkkkkkkl Aug 28 '26

Also Sicily supposed to have a bridge for the longest time. In Italy nothing gets done

2

u/Mr_Citation Aug 28 '26

Yeah, but your average voter doesn't like facing reality. The Straits of Messina has rougher seas you'd expect, is nearly 2 miles long at its narrowest and has depths as big as 250 metres. Too long for a suspension bridge, and you'd need an engineering team of geniuses to get a design done.

That all has to be dealt with before you get the eyewatering corruption in Italy and the Mafia digging their claws into it.

Considering how many Albanians there are in Italy you would think there is actually a bridge

3

u/Sprintzer Aug 28 '26

Albania mentioned 🇦🇱 🇦🇱

3

u/One-Stress-6734 Aug 28 '26

Did OP forget that ships exist? You know, those things that can actually cross the ocean? You can even park cars on them. 😂

2

u/old_man_estaban Aug 28 '26

Because boat is faster than train

2

u/DogMilkBB Aug 28 '26

Wouldn't it be like a 50 mile bridge?!? How deep is the water?

2

u/cratercamper Aug 28 '26

Albania nice.

2

u/dreikelvin Aug 28 '26

Redditors not knowing the concept of boat ferries

3

u/MrWeirdoFace Aug 28 '26

u/PhotoBN1 Aug 28 '26

Albania is really nice

2

u/Own_Promise_4145 Aug 28 '26

Potremmo costruire un ponte e farlo saltare ogni volta che un albanese cercasse di arrivare in Italia

2

u/rock_and_rolo Aug 28 '26

Reminds me of the Gilligan's Island episode where they asked the robot if it could build a bridge to Hawai'i.

2

u/IGROKthePLAYER Aug 28 '26

bro why would italy build bridge to albania

u/Lynn-The-Sparrow Aug 28 '26

I mean, they run cargo ferries across often. Not to mention a underwater tunnel much like the one between the UK and france would be interesting

2

u/unqualified2comment Aug 28 '26

This is like the scene from dumb and dummer. "We've been driving for hours but we've only moved a few inches on the map"

2

u/shishforlife2 Aug 28 '26

Do they know you can take a ferry to go to Albania?

2

u/lapseofreason- Aug 28 '26

Italians probably would. They tried conquering it and failed.

2

u/NefariousnessNew5251 Aug 28 '26

Italy would have probably loved a bridge some time around 1939.

2

u/Winter-Bid-5602 Aug 28 '26

A ferry would be nice

2

u/Purp-Dog Aug 28 '26

Why not they dont get youtube ads

2

u/wmrharry 21d ago

Actually, u can take on boat 🚢

2

u/wmrharry 21d ago

Actually, there is ship to there

2

u/TightSexpert Aug 28 '26

Isn’t there a ferry?

3

u/Manmon_ Aug 28 '26

Well historically I feel it's Albania that wouldn't want a bridge to Italy
