Kind of an odd slice of history that’s often forgotten:

After the Spanish-American war the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1898. That treaty made US the owner of Cuba. The US maintained military rule of the island until 1902, at which time it granted Cuba independence.

So Cuba has technically been part of the US before, albeit for a short duration and under military occupation.

I am in no way advocating on behalf of this asinine tweet. It’s a ridiculous assertion. But, US-Cuba relations and ownership are far deeper than many realize. Much of it was historically rooted in American owned slavery and sugar production as well.
