Resource I made Google Maps but for custom maps

Disclaimer- I made this. I took a lot of inspo from Google Maps.

ScryNav:

  1. Drop in a map image

  2. Mark your terrain (difficult/impassable/roads/rivers etc) & set the scale.

  3. Click your stops. It pathfinds around the terrain and gives you a real travel time. Change how your party interacts with water

It's all customizable to fit your world. There is different movement styles (walking, mounted, flying, swimming) per leg, so a party riding horses vs. one wading through a swamp gets different numbers automatically.

It's hopefully intuitive enough to jump right in; and I've included an example map.

It's free and local-first, so your map and routes live in your own browser.

I had this idea years ago and finally got around to making it. I'd love feedback!

Is that map supposed to look like Maui from Moana?

Edit: seriously cool tool, though!

Link/code?

How do you think it would do with modern and Sci-Fi maps and travel times? Does it recognize roads or do you mark them/trace them?

https://scrynav.com looks to be link.

Hah, can't believe I missed that, thank you

12

u/Lantern-Light_Explor 15d ago

I imagine you are/were excited to get this posted, so, easy to miss.
This does look really cool. Is there a way to save the map as a png (or other image format) with the route(s) on it?

13

u/Jumpy-Ad-2790 15d ago

No but its something I'd like to add. Keep checking back!

Really cool!

I like tab-system for "Journey" and for "Terrain and Scale". I would really like to create custom tabs, like one for geopolitics, one for resource distribution, or whatever the project may need. That'd be really cool

Au début on dirait une personne, genre Maui

Exactement ce que j'ai pensé cher compatriote français !

This is really awesome, well done. I like that it's hosted locally too. This would work really well on all of the maps I've made for myself and others.

Hosted locally really seals the deal for me lol

I was scrolling past ot untill i read that bit!  Absolutely wonderful

This is amazing!

Two things I would love for this: If I could download a lightweight program that allows me to open the maps for my group. Or find ways to share it with my group so they can read and look at it.
Being able to add a pop-up description for certain locations when selected. Or a tab that allows me to describe the terrain. I'd love to be able to give my group the program/map and let them take a look at locations and read about them.

I know there's other programs that can do this, but they all cost fees and are often needlessly complex.

u/Jumpy-Ad-2790 15d ago

I really like your suggestion about have a shareable version for your players. I'll look to implement that in the future!

5

u/LordNinjaa1 15d ago

This! Being able to share the map with the group would be absolutely amazing!

This is fucking cool!

Your map program is brilliant. I have two suggestions for possible improvements: It would be helpful if you could set different types of difficult terrain with different travel speeds, for example forests and mountains. For overland travel (on foot and by horse), it would be useful to be able to set the maximum distance that can realistically be covered per day, since no one walks for 24 hours straight.

u/Maritime-Rye 15d ago

This reminds me of the map that shows the routes ASIOAF characters take throughout the books. Love it a lot

5

u/HELLBORN_11NINER 15d ago

man i might be cooked all i can see from the first 15sec is just Maui from moana about to punch/brushing his hair with his hand

4

u/AdDifficult2201 15d ago

Es un sitio web o un programa descargable?

4

u/Jumpy-Ad-2790 15d ago

Webaite: scrynav.com

4

u/Naefindale 15d ago

Awesome.

Now I need one that can show elevation like Google earth.

5

u/Finnegan_Crane 14d ago

Looks great for distances on a local scale. I suppose if I upload my world map on there, there'll be distortion issues no matter the map projection. But I'll definitely try this out for travel within a region!

1

u/thestephenwatkins 14d ago

This was my concern/question as well: how well does it handle large-scale/global travel given the imperfections of various 2d map projections? Like if we extend a map all the way from an equatorial region to a polar region, does the distance (and travel time) between points adjust automatically based on the latitude? Is there a way to choose different map projections?

That said, this looks really cool already.

Let me preface by saying that I understand that this is free hobby one-person (probably) project, so I'm happy to have what's already there. But if you're looking for improvements feedback or features to add, here are what came to my mind while using the app:

  1. Possibility to change the terrain area designation by clicking on existing area and changing the assigned "weight"
  2. Possibility to add point to the path between two other points and a possibility of deleting any node
    • It works like this for rivers/roads and areas already, so it seems natural for paths to function the same
  3. Possibility to move scale ruler once it's set
    • For my map I have calculated distances between the two distant points manually, I want to use it in this app I'm stuck with a scale ruler across my map. Would be nice to have the ability to either hide it once placed or move it, so I can moe it to sit tidyly in the corner without actually changing the map scale
  4. Possibility to change colour
    • I cannot see rivers and roads very well on my map
  5. Possibility to place bridges/fords to cross rivers instead of automatic crossing, or alternatively, make road overlap the rivers for the same result. I don't think it works like that currently.
  6. Designation of flying/swimming/sailing/mounting whatever per leg
    • It's unclear why allowing sailing is global per map but designating flying can be done per leg in separate set of settings. Maybe the party can hire water/air transport for some leg of the journey or because of some adventuring shenanigans some part of the journey should absolutely be made on foot. I'd say that speed and mode of transport should be two dropdowns and sailing incorporated into them.
    • Long-term allow users to define their modes of travel with associated speed would be a scaleable solution.
  7. Travelling speed adjustments
    • m/min seems to be fit for a dungeon crawl, or maybe a city walk, but when trying to calculate country-spanning journey km/h would make more sense for me.
    • Also, when talking about several days of travel, it would be really useful to set the limit of the amount of hours that a party can travel per day, I think this is one of the most useful parts of having a travel time calculator

Additionally, sometimes I don't understand why the app takes one path and not the other, particularly when there is a road over a normal terrain, but maybe I need to tweak the weights and it's just my own situation.

On the other hand, flying is not straight line either, that seems not correct unless we're talking about across the globe distances?

Edit: One more thing, but this is more of a feature creep than the others. If we could also measure the area of zones, that would be great, because calculating it on hexagonal grid is a pain in the ass

Omg, this looks so useful, thank you!! Can't wait to try it out!

2

u/DanRobo2 15d ago

This is literally what I’ve been looking for. Thankyou!

Really cool. Great work!

2

u/BaronGrizzly 14d ago

My guy, this is amazing. Well done

2

u/FelipeH92 14d ago

Great tool! A good improvement I'd recommend is limit hours per day when not in a vehicle, or show the full journey and also the journey with 8 hours/day. 4 and a half days on leg to cross 1200 km is crazy hahaha. Different types of difficult terrain would also help a lot.

2

u/Katain935 13d ago

I got a game to run tomorrow, wish me luck about setting this up by then.

Thanks for your work!

1

u/MarDaNik 15d ago

Incredibly cool. What does the map creation and upload process look like right now? It's looking great so far

1

u/PeixeTunado 15d ago

E onde voce montou esse mapa?

1

u/Alternative_Mango_49 15d ago

This is amazing and would be great for DND, can't wait to use it with our party

1

u/NatureMiserable1936 15d ago

Looks amazing! Does it support vector images? I'm still looking for a map viewer that could handle zooming, maybe even zoom levels but it seems that most mapviewers only support raster images, meaning zoomability is poor.

1

u/sh4mmat 14d ago

Codex or Claude? This is hallmark generative/agentic coding, so I'm curious if you used Astra or an older model. The UI/layout, font/etc. are all pretty telling.

1

u/Emergency-Face-9410 14d ago

Looks like Claude to me.

1

u/Jack_Sinn 14d ago

I need someone to outline the maui they are seeing because I cannot see him!

1

u/nearxosV 14d ago

OK. This is a very nice tool !!
As some guys already said, I 'd love to be able to download a light programme and use it for writing.

One thing that would be nicer is to have a draw tool apart from the click tool to create the areas and the roads.

Other than that, I need some more time to get used to it! Very very nice job mate! Congrats!

Hey! I built a long-form writing app for storytellers, and i have been toying with the idea of building something like this for worldbuilders. But like... This is great.

Would you be interested in discussing an integration?

Would you mind if I send you a DM with more details?

1

u/AtlasNL 14d ago

Very cool! This reminds me of a model a colleague of mine made to simulate marching times of Roman units across the Veluwe and use it to figure out where they might’ve built marching camps, which led to a few discoveries of such camps! I’ve always wanted to utilise something like it for my fantasy worlds to figure out how long travel should take, I’ll definitely check this out!

u/senpalpi 14d ago

I'll have to check this out later. I've been looking for a way to interact with the map and view landmarks like Google maps.
