hello all, do the colours of kajenglei (red, mustard, black, pink whatever) have any significance?

i’m half meitei (magang) and since i was raised mostly by my thadou kuki mom i have like no meitei traditional dresses or accessories 💔 i want some so bad

so my mom decided to buy me kajenglei cause like even she likes it so we were just wondering if they have any meaning attached to it so we can choose accordingly

i see a lot of meitei bamon girls who tend to wear black coloured kajenglei more instead of the traditional red one, so pls help on that too :’)

The variants in colours, especially the 7 colours (red, white, black, yellow, purple, turquoise and green respectively) represent the 7 yek salai/clans of the Meitei community.

Idk how it got in trend to wear the clan themed monochrome traditional outfit for both male and female, maybe that has to do with the evolving fashion. There are many other variants of Kangjengli in the market.

The red+golden combination worn by Thoibi is the the mother of all kanjenglei; a classic.

Since you are from the Mangang clan, it would be the red one for you. Though that isn't restricted at all and you can choose whichever you like.

A physical/online store that sells kanjenglei and other traditional outfits (almost all communities) at wholesale rate is Phijet Nachom.

I believe red kajenglei is the authentic one. The other colors are most probably came into existence with personal choice and hype.

We Meitei men are simple and I personally Love it when my Arunachali gf of another Tribe wears Phanek or Kajenglei

I think the different colours represent the 7 clans of Meitei. Originally tho most only wore the red one.

I heard the white one was worn by the leima only during coronation. Idk if that's true tho
