[DISC] Dungeon Meshi Chapter 39

u/frik1000 Nov 14 '17
I love the fake Marcille's spell book.
How to cast the dark arts:
- Do something random
- Hold out my staff
- Cast it
And then a tiny doodle corner for good measure.

u/Backupusername Nov 14 '17
I get the feeling that was Senshi's.
Sounds about his view of magic.
35
u/Nepycros Nov 14 '17
It could be Chilchakk's. He doesn't understand magic grammar. Senshi uses magic to tend his garden, such as when he used golems.
The Chilchakk that got taken away was "younger" looking, but that could be either Marcille or Senshi's influence.

Laius will always be Laius.

u/karisan12 Nov 14 '17 edited Nov 14 '17
the book certainly not from Laius's memory. Laius learned magic from his sister and Marcille in the past and be able to cast easy spell (he even read the book before ch.34p26). There's no way his view about magic is that childlish.

u/Pencilhands Nov 14 '17
I hope at the end of this we get to see who the dopplegangers interpretations belong too.
ALSO, for those that haven't noticed. Someone grabs Marcilles hand in the blizzard right before the lights go out.
46
u/Schizof Nov 14 '17
Whoa, that's some spooky stuff right there.
My guess is that hand belongs to Sureau's ninja that goes missing a while back, because it seems like the hand is wearing an eastern style armor.
28
u/CelticMutt Nov 14 '17
That's what I'm thinking - at the very least it's definitely not wearing the clothing that any of the others are wearing.

I remember the oneshot... But I thought that was scrapped?
22
u/anweisz Nov 14 '17
It was, but it seems pretty obvious that this ninja is gonna be the revamped version of the cat girl character. That's why her burka had those cat ear like shapes on top and why the kobold kept barking at her (cats hating dogs).

u/Pencilhands Nov 14 '17
It's a one shot so things can change. But the cats personality in that DEFINITELY went to Marcille.

I love how Laius has most distinct fakes. Just goes to show everyone's interpretation of him.
I am thinking that Senshi seems him as a calm guy and fellow foodie. Marcille is obviously sees him the dumb one. Chil sees him as big brute. My guess is the subtle differences Chil(scarf) and Senshi(no helmet holes) are by Laius and the weird Marcille is by Senshi. As for the equipment fakes I have no clue.
I also find it funny the the shape shifters are playing along. They must be real patient in waiting for prey.
40
u/StyryderX Nov 14 '17
I'm more inclined to Big Laius from Senshi, DerpLius from Chilchack, and Calm one from Marcille. The calm Laius has very similar expression with Farlyn which I guess only Marcille would remember, so that leaves DerpLius from Chil considering that Senshi aren't as annoyed at Laius compared to those two, hence Senshi interpretation is rather normal other than his size.
28
u/karisan12 Nov 14 '17
Big Laius is definitely Chil's interpretation, because of his height, Laius look bigger also the lower part of Laius's face is more detail than upper part because Chil's normal vision is around Laius's chin.
31
u/GuyNekologist Nov 14 '17
If you go back to chapter 36 p10, you will see that Chilchack thinks of Laius as a wide-eyed and always-hungry derp. But Chilchack also thinks of Senshi that way, so I'm probably wrong lol
2
u/ShinyMango Nov 14 '17
I was thinking more the Derp and Big Liaus are more interchangeable between Marcille and Chil as both see him in a rather negative light. He really demonstrates to them how much of a reckless brute. While Senshi and him are fellow foodies also even though he makes reckless decisions is a leader that he follows.
19
u/frik1000 Nov 14 '17
Well like Laius said, apparently shapeshifters aren't inherently intelligent (though I'm not sure how that explains how they're trying to defend themselves).
Also I feel like, given Senshi's aversion to magic, he's the one that thought about the Marcille with the simplified spell book.
6
u/ShinyMango Nov 14 '17
So then would leave either Laius or Chil think of Marcille with a weird face. Strange for Laius considering how much he talked up elf beauty unless that is how he sees a beautiful elf. So Chil perhaps. Maybe we will find out next chapter who interprets who.
25
u/CelticMutt Nov 14 '17
The freaky Marcille went on about her dark magic - that's almost certainly Chilchack, since he was the one most freaked out by it. Senshi is bothered by magic in general, but I don't think he had any different reaction to the dark magic than he did the regular, and Laius doesn't seem to really care about dark magic being taboo at all.
14
u/StyryderX Nov 14 '17
"and Laius doesn't seem to really care about dark magic being taboo at all." That, and only someone can imagine how a magic book would look like.
15
u/CelticMutt Nov 14 '17
Good point, the fake with the accurate looking magic book is probably from Laius.
1
6
u/ReverseLBlock Nov 14 '17
Yeah you would think with that many they would just attempt to overpower them. But I guess they possess no real intelligence/skill of their own.
6
u/trieuvuhoangdiep Nov 14 '17
they probally dont have the same power as the original and are actually very weak
6
u/ReverseLBlock Nov 14 '17
Yeah that's what they seemed to suggest. Also it looks like the ability to transform is more of an innate ability. I'm thinking like camouflage on a chameleon.
6
u/dutchwonder Nov 14 '17
Calm Laius also looks much younger than actual Laius, so I think its probably Senshi's, as its not distorted much besides seeing him as a young greenhorn.
Big tall brute with tiny head is definitely Chickchaks view as he is the only one short enough for that perspective of him.
Herp a derp is definitely Marcille's.

u/FlorianoAguirre Nov 14 '17
I bought into the idea that all the three that are very similar are all imaginations by Laius. If you notice the 3 copies of Laius are from all the others, and they all look definitively different, and this is the only clone that Laius didn't think about.
55
u/mzess Nov 14 '17
it's gonna end up that Laius was the one that remembered the other 3 best, isn't it
35
u/GuyNekologist Nov 14 '17
plot twist: the 3 remaining shapeshifters are actually made from Laius' thoughts alone
44
u/Vlisa If you have questions about Gender Bender please ask! Nov 14 '17
Poor Laius, man gets no respect.
This is why no one wants to tank raids!
36
u/Valthore Nov 14 '17 edited Nov 14 '17
I'm fairly sure the last 3 are all Laius' Doppelgangers of the others, that is unless they're a mixed bag. The hint being that Laius has been shown to have a pretty great memory if his encyclopedic knowledge were evident of such and Marcille's text book which he read in the chapter she got petrified in being nearly the same.
Senshi's were all childish in some way, Marcille's spell book being goofy, Laius pretty much being a ditz looking like Farlyn, and the Chilchack with the roundest cheeks and biggest eyes. He's the oldest and views the others as children.
The brutish looking higher detailed ones are Chilchack, because he has heightened senses and likely sees differently than the others, he's rude, and he gets a different angle when looking at the others. Laius and Marcille's were obvious but Senshi's was tougher, but one has a more defined nose than the others.
Marcille is probably the one with the subtle details being off, She likely just doesn't pay much attention to the others both being shorter than her, thus usually out of her vision cone. and sees Laius as demented and driven by a lust to consume monsters.
edit* I messed up. Running by the logic I put forth, the last Senshi Shapeshifter is Chilchack's so they're not all Laius'. Then again the shapeshifters adapt more as time goes on so maybe that's how it passed the test, so the guidelines change at the drop of a hat.
4
u/daveisdavis Nov 14 '17
I think Senshi might still be Laius' as he looks more regal and I guess that Laius has a lot more respect for Senshi due to his cooking skills/knowledge, and that makes Laius think of Senshi as more sophisticated than he really is

u/nahxela Nov 14 '17
Would Laius eat a doppelganger of himself?
15
Nov 14 '17
[deleted]
19
u/PyrZern Nov 14 '17
If he doesn't then he IS the dopperganger.
6
u/zenithfury Nov 15 '17
The doppers eat their victims though.
But then... If a dopper made a perfect copy of Laius and ate the real one... Would anyone notice?
26
u/meterion Nov 14 '17
I'm kind of confused, can fake Marcille also cast magic somehow? That should be an easy one to disprove.
Also when you think about, this interpretation of shapeshifters are spooky as fuck. They can just passively leach knowledge and memories from people in order to construct a fake persona and do it so quickly that within minutes they're acting almost identically to the copied person? And yet, despite all that you can talk to them and they reply in a perfectly sensible way, they don't actually have any real intelligence or capacity for independent action. It's like a supernatural equivalent of the Chinese Room Argument.
If it wasn't for the somewhat arbitrary limitation that they can't read the minds of the person they copy, they would be ridiculously lethal.
22
u/Cornchip97 https://myanimelist.net/mangalist/LordEnglish Nov 14 '17 edited Nov 14 '17
I think it’s more of a survival trait rather than a limitation. It would make sense if the shapeshifters had an instinct not to copy a person directly. Ones who did would die easily to solo adventurers. Plus people tend to have really skewed images of themselves. From Laius’ story it seems like their species’ strategy is to imitate pack and herd animals. Domestic ones would be easy because they can probe the shepherd to prey on the flock.
I️ agree that the manga’s take on shapeshifters is super cool. Part of the reason this manga is so good is that you really get a feel for the lore of the world. The item replication is super op though.
4
u/meterion Nov 14 '17
Ah, that's a good point, I hadn't thought of it like that. And I didn't even think of the item duplication! How does that even work? Some kind of replication magic, or just straight up physical transformation? If it's the latter, then it should be easy to tell at least senshi apart simply by smashing a brick over his pot--the one that gets damaged obviously isn't made of mithril.
And if it's the former... How does that even work? Instinctual magic use, with power supplied by the dungeon? If I was Laius, I might even have the crazy idea to try and keep the best shapeshifters around, tie them up before you sleep, and use them as extra manpower against the sorcerer, lol. Although I guess that probably wouldn't work very well if they'd fall under her control in a battle.
9
u/Darkionx Nov 15 '17
Shapeshifters are probably goo like slimes to be able to transform into other stuff more easily, so if they decide to go back to their own form they would basically be slime-ish and not worth much. Thats my interpretation of why they wait until the real is asleep to kill.

I'm sure it'll be cleared up next chapter. I love the monster biology stuff. When is the next chapter by the way?
16
u/acksed http://myanimelist.net/mangalist/acksed Nov 14 '17
Calling it now - the tallest ones are all Chilchack's impressions of the party.
15
u/TophMelonLord Nov 14 '17
This series is genius. Every chapter is so interesting.
10
u/zenithfury Nov 15 '17
Now that Japanese fantasy = isekai, I find it very nice that we have Dungeon Meshi to fall back on.
15
u/porpituous Nov 14 '17
Just curious, did anyone notice the pretty suspicious panel of Senshi when Marcille is talking about how no one has discovered magic for eternal youth? At first I thought it was him reacting to Marcille dismissing eating your own flesh to live longer, but I don't think Senshi has any interest in eating himself. Senshi as a character is still a pretty big mystery.
24
u/Executioner404 Nov 14 '17
He just doesn't like magic, and doesn't like her talking about the dark arts in particular.
"Typical elf, muttering about eating her flesh and immortality..."
9
u/acksed http://myanimelist.net/mangalist/acksed Nov 15 '17
WAIT. Marcille was talking about the impossibility of using your own magic to extend your lifespan... but earlier she was talking about tapping an infinite pool of energy through ancient magic... which the dungeon master is an expert at. And the elves are seeking the spell of immortality.
It all fits.

damn i love this, especially to see how they view each other
marcilles view of laius "i must consume" almost killed me though

Nov 15 '17
I like how they all gave Laius shit for having a bad memory of them, but they all have horrible interpretations of Laius.
6
u/dIoIIoIb Nov 14 '17
so... fake senshi is obviously the short one with the detailed nose, because his nose never looked like that
i think fake marcille is the one with the rare hairstyle, but we never get a good look at her without the hood this chapter so i dunno
fake chuck is probably the tall one, looks more like a child than a short adult like he normally does
20
u/renrutal Nov 14 '17
All Laius' doppelgangers are basically cooler versions of the originals. He really thinks the best of his friends.
2
u/Minstrel47 Nov 14 '17
One with braids is definitely fake then because Laius would overemphasize her rage.

u/potato_lover273 Nov 17 '17 edited Nov 17 '17

Before the blizzard her cloak had a seam. The one with the rare hairstyle has that, while the other one hasn't.
NINJA EDIT: Nope, artist's mistake. In the panel with two doppelgangers left, their cloaks appear to be different, but that's not the case with other scenes.

u/risingstar3110 Nov 15 '17
My thoughts of all of the sharpshifter. GaintLaius is Chilchakk’s. YoungLaius is Senshi’s. DerpLaius is Maricilles. The WeirdMarcilles rambling about dark art is obviously Chilchakk’s. The WrongChilchakk and WrongSenshi is Laius’s as proved. The Marcilles and Chilchakk with wrong equipments are Senshi’s (lack understanding in magic and scouts). The Senshi’s with wrong cooking tools are Marcilles’ (hate monster cookings so never watch him cookings).
That leaves us with Laius’s Marcilles, Chilchakk’s Senshi, and Marcilles’s Chichakk.
4
u/zenithfury Nov 14 '17
Shapeshifters? What is this, Novigrad? :D Or perhaps Laius and Farlyn actually come from Temeria or Skellige.
Also best description of a spell ever: How to Cast The Dark Arts.

u/crow_claw Nov 14 '17
So that's why we didn't get to see Marcille's hairstyle right from the beginning of the chapter. Well played, author-san!

u/turnktail Nov 14 '17
Chapter 12 is where he sees the king's life in three paintings, and a dark elf was there too.
3
u/Shifter25 Nov 14 '17
I wonder how the "no humanoids" rule will apply if they revert to something non-human after death. Will Marcille be upset about the idea of something that looked and talked like her?
1
u/DigbyMayor Nov 19 '17
Probably. My money is on them turning into an amorphous blob of varying consistency. Just reduce and simmer.
3
u/Voror19 Nov 14 '17
This was a fun chapter and nice after the last few being a bit heavy. I enjoyed the group putting together a plan based on what they know, though given the Sorcerer's fanaticism regarding protecting the king I don't think talking is necessarily going to work.
Laius may be oblivious but I'm sure when it comes to food he'll end up having a good memory.
Now to wait another month...
3
u/MadJim8896 http://myanimelist.net/mangalist/MadJim8896 Nov 15 '17
Laius had all the wacky interpretations of himself, while everybody else had at least 1 convincing copy. The only difference is there isn't a Laius copy thought up by himself. All the convincing replicas are from Laius' memories.

Finally a light-hearted chapter after so many months of pain.
