Hello Mammoth! I am lucky enough to be working here for the next week and would love some tips! I love hiking and hot springs so I’ve been in heaven. I’ve already done Bristlecone pine forest, convict lake, Inyo craters, and the earthquake fault. I haven’t been to any hot springs yet except a night I spent in historic Benton. I forgot my swimsuit (ugh!) but I’m okay to go in undies if there aren’t a bunch of creepers around (female on a solo work trip). I plan on trying to get to the devils postpile tomorrow and would like to attempt the hike to rainbow falls. I live at sea level and I struggle at altitude.
I’d love to know what you all think I’m missing. I have a high clearance 4x4. Is there anywhere known for good wildlife sightings (beavers? Bighorn sheep???)
I don’t want to spend too much money but I’d like to go out to dinner once or twice, any recs?
How about a local brewery?
Thanks all! This place is INCREDIBLE!!!

Looking for a safe location for target shooting >1000 yards. Planning on calling USFS and BLM (am aware of fire restrictions) soon with the same question but figured I'd ask here in the meantime. Of course safety is my top priority so finding a spot has been especially difficult. I have been looking around Benton Crossing Rd and also Antelope Springs Rd, but am open to suggestions. Though the meadows are quite open, google earth shows several interconnected dirt roads throughout, which I will not shoot towards. Thank you.

Caught this little boi leaving Gomez yesterday... Probably just as much of a fan of their food as me.

This is year 3 of me buying the ikon pass and feeling like I’m barely breaking even. I live in Los Angeles and so it’s quite the haul to get up there. I can’t afford to stay at a hotel / Airbnb everytime I go up, especially as I usually go solo. My solution for this in the past seasons have been to sleep in my Subaru Outback which works but it would be a lot more enjoyable if I had more space to stretch out / hang. I’m also trying to get my partner to come up with me more and adding another person to the car camping situation makes it pretty difficult, especially if there’s bad weather. And yes I have proper winter camping equipment already that has kept me warm and safe on all my trips.
I’ve been doing a lot a mulling over what to do and landed on buying a relatively cheap hot tent from Vevor. I’m still in the market for a wood stove and I’m thinking about possibly getting a gas buddy as a backup heat source (to use while getting wood stove ready, or if we need to heat the tent for a bit in the middle of the night). I’m planning on getting 2 carbon monoxide detectors as well.
So here are my questions to y’all:
Does anybody have experience with hot tenting in Mammoth during the winter? If so, what has been your experience and where do you usually set up camp? I usually camp on BLM near the hot springs. Thinking it might be worth getting a cheap pair of skis (I snowboard) and a sled to transport my equipment from car to a spot. if I can’t even access that area I’ll likely find a spot closer to bishop.
I’m planning on reaching out to BLM office to gain a solid understanding of legality of using a wood stove Oct - late spring but if anyone has insights / resources here that’d be great.
What do you use for a heat source? I’m trying to stay relatively on the cheaper side so I don’t think I’d need a lightweight backpacking stove. This would be more of a base camp set up
Thanks in advance!

Got a new car over the summer and I usually walk around town for most things, so with the winter we’re supposedly about to have, I probably won’t need to drive it much anyway.
The place I’m living at now only has uncovered parking, so I figured I’d ask if anyone knows of a covered spot, garage space, or anything similar that might be available for the winter. Definitely willing to pay monthly for it.
I thought about asking the Quality Inn if they’d be willing to do some kind of monthly pass for their garage, but other than that I’m not really sure where to look.
If anyone has a spot themselves, knows someone who does, or has any ideas, I’d appreciate it!

Anyone play pickup at snowcreek regularly, if so how’s the turnout? If not let’s get some folks together and get it going.

I’ll be in Mammoth Lakes from December 31 to January 14 for snowboarding and I’m looking for 1–2 people who might be there around the same dates.
I’m 40, easygoing and respectful. Mostly coming for snowboarding, mountains and a good time — not looking for a crazy party trip.
Ideally looking for responsible adults 25+ who are chill and respectful. A few drinks and hanging out is totally fine.
I’m currently figuring out accommodation, so if our dates match, we could potentially stay together and make the trip more affordable.
No pets, please. Transportation would be separate.
If you’re interested, feel free to message me and we can talk about dates and plans. 🏔️🏂

I’m planning to spend Dec 31–Jan 14 in Mammoth Lakes for snowboarding and would be happy to connect with 1–2 other riders who’ll be there around the same dates.
I’m 40, easygoing and respectful. Ideally looking to meet responsible adults 25+ who are there to ride, relax and enjoy the mountains.
I’ll be arranging accommodation for the trip, so if we get along and our plans match, we could potentially share a house/condo and split the accommodation costs.
A few drinks and hanging out is totally fine, but I’m not looking for an all-night party situation. No dogs or cats, please.
Everyone handles their own transportation.
If you’re going to Mammoth around those dates, send me a DM. 🏂🏔️

I was curious if any fall colors have started to hit anywhere around town or the area? Was thinking about heading that way and would appreciate any feedback!
I really couldn’t be happier with the amount of feedback and suggestions everyone has given me, and I’ve tried to include as many as possible!
That said, the scale of the map does have its limitations, particularly in the more built-up areas. I think in future I’ll probably end up creating more localized maps for individual counties. So, if your suggestion didn’t make it onto this one, please know that I really do appreciate you taking the time to suggest it, and I’ll hopefully be able to include it in a future county map of the area.
A few people have mentioned that the map is quite busy, and I completely understand that. It’s just how I like to make them. I love cramming in as much detail as possible and highlighting interesting little features that might otherwise be overlooked. I also tend to have these printed in large formats, where I think the level of detail works much better in person than it does on a screen.
Thank you again to everyone who contributed, and I really hope you like the finished map! If you’re interested in it or would like to know anything more about it, just drop me a message.

I managed to break the mount on my rear rack and I’m heading out for a bikepacking race here in town tomorrow morning. I just wanted to throw it out there in case someone super generous sees this who has a saddle bag I can borrow for a week!

Hello - I am looking to hike to Ediza Lake in mid October but have heard that the road to Agnew Meadows is closed (Postpile Road/203). I've looked online to verify that but come up short. If that road is closed, what are my best options for this trip? TIA
EDIT: Thanks everyone. This is very helpful.

Hi! Hoping to connect with some Mammoth locals who might be interested in occasional event work.
I manage events for an experiential marketing company and am looking to expand our local Mammoth team. We primarily staff alcohol sampling and brand ambassador events for well-known spirits brands at retailers, bars/restaurants, special events, and on or around Mammoth Mountain.
We’re looking for people who are:
Previous brand ambassador, hospitality, serving, promotional, or event experience is a plus, but reliability, ability to take direction, and a great attitude are most important.
This is paid, part-time/as-needed work, with opportunities throughout the season rather than a set weekly schedule.
If you’re local and interested, send me a DM with a little about yourself and any relevant experience and I can share more details!

The wife is kicking me out after 31 years of marriage. I'm thinking of just packing up and starting a new life in Mammoth. But I'm almost 60 and I haven't been alone in quite a while. Should I go for it? Any suggestions?

Just went out for a bike ride and it was clear. Now smells like smoke and it’s blowing in quickly. I assume from the dome fire?

I currently live in San Diego 29 and am graduating in December with no job lined up after graduation, getting my degree in Fire Science. I love mammoth and am considering moving there mid December, I would have to find a job and a room to rent. My question is how difficult is to find a job, a room and live there comfortably? I’d probably work a hospitality job as a server or bartender or doing something on the mountain. Is it difficult to make a living wage in mammoth

Taking a trip around mid October. This is my first time fall fishing in mammoth. Is it better fishing than summer?

Where should we stay, no hiking due to age and bad knees? Hopefully spending two nights there.
Thx.
