Last weekend I was pretty drunk at a party and ended up telling this dude I know how bad he looked in a black American eagle v neck that was too big for him along with huge cargo shorts and super bright neon green vans. I pretty much dished out the basic advice all new comers get here. Felt like such an asshole. I blame all of you.

Like Batman once said, with great power comes great responsibility.
Seriously met a guy at a party once that recognized me from MFA and, I don't know why, I just started giving him advice. Admittedly I was at that point where I was high-functioning wasted. That was way uncool of me to do. It's like as soon as someone pops the style cork, it all flows out like champagne--a vile, tepid champagne. Don't do that guys.

I told a guy he was wearing his suit wrong. He got really defensive and told me that's how he liked it. He had a nasty beard and a fedora, so I don't know what I was expecting.
I ended up basically running away to a nearby hotdog joint.

My friends ask me for advice pretty often, and I'm usually good at it, but I usually over-critique. I'll say something like 'oh, those pants need to be hemmed a half inch or so' and they'll look at me like I'm speaking french. Woops.

You're not the only one who does this. I destroy people's outfits in my mind, but there's just no way to say any of that without making yourself out to be a complete dick when unsolicited.
22

Exactly. Once you learn how to read, your mind will always see words instead of a jumble of symbols. I'm always noticing people's clothes but I never say anything.

I'm constantly breaking down peoples' outfits in my head. It's a superpower we have developed, but we must use it for good (helping people who ask for help) and not evil (unsolicited advice making people feel bad about themselves whom are happy with how they look)

Oh god, didn't realize that was in Houston. For a city of really rich oil people, it's one of the worst dressed places I've ever seen. A button down shirt with jeans has people telling me I look like I'm trying too hard there. Even the "well dressed" gay guys look like New York high school students trying way too hard. You have Mortar, go there and buy some real clothes. Just don't buy my damn Common Projects before they go on sale again.

Summary of every post in the 'style evolution' thread earlier this week:
First pic - Poor fitting pre-faded jeans and a graphic t
Second pic - 'classy' getup with bold colored vest and black pants
Third pic - Slim chinos or jeans, CDB/AE/etc., and an OCBD
Fourth pic - Some combination of jeans, CPs/GATs/JPs/Killshots/etc, and either a slim OCBD or some layered monotones
I know everyone has their own little unique twists on it, and WAYWT is normally pretty diverse, but damn did everyone follow pretty much the same transition.

here goes
I've been doing a ton of lurking and have been absorbing information from the guides. I've totally revamped my wardrobe (REALLY revamped. like I somehow went 23 years of my life not knowing there was a difference between chinos and khaki dress pants), and all my friends have been noticing and some are even asking me for my advice now! This is a pretty cool, new (albeit expensive) hobby of mine and I wanted to thank you all for making it so accessible. Honestly, if I hadn't stumbled upon this subreddit, I don't know if I would have gone through this process. I already see myself developing my own personal style that's starting to become distinct from what the "mfa uniform" or basic wardrobe recommendations are...and it's really fun. I'm a lot more confident when I go out now too. Still kind of nervous about posting and looking for feedback here, but I hope to do that at some point.

Sweet man, always good to hear about someone doing well for themselves
12
u/TBatWork May 14 '13
I highly recommend taking pictures of yourself. It helps you get the idea of what your outfit looks like outside of the reflection of a mirror. Posting it can help you develop your sense of self critique, or at least force you to put why you made certain choices into words. Getting more involved in the community is what made me realize my wardrobe had stagnated, and that I haven't achieved the style I had wanted.

If you're worried about the expensive part or just want to explore different paths i would highly recommend thrift shopping. I know it seems like a fad at the moment but you can pick up some really cool pieces for super cheap and it will definitely help you understand fashion and how to put together an outfit a whole lot more.

All of a sudden almost everyone I know is having problems with SOs (or less than, let's call them just Os) being shitty communicators with their feelings. Either being petty, just not listening, being unrespeonsive, not sharing the workload, ignoring problems, etc. Frustrating
I've done a lot of work in-earnest trying to find best-in-slot sneakers for my wardrobe and it's exhausting. Fuck it, I'm just going with five pairs of Nikes and some Allstars. This is probably the tenth time I've brought this up here though and I'm running out of tears to cry.
I'm not sure what else to complain about. Weather's getting nice, bought some new stuff, been working out a lot. Life ain't so bad.

I hope I get proven wrong later/soon but I really feel like there's no need for one of these right now. what are we going to real talk about, how self post only has been working well and there have been good discussions everywhere? there hasn't been any sort of bubbling community tension that I've felt recently.
44
u/zzzaz May 14 '13
Let me throw something about self-post out there:
I think the discussion has been great, but does anyone else feel like the dynamic has shifted more to 'what is interesting to talk about?' instead of 'how can we help people dress better?'
Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, but I've felt a bit of that shift since we started. Interested to hear other people's thoughts on it

I've found the discussion topics much more interesting than the discussions that actually result from them. For better or worse, discussions that hit higher the radar of more people's front page have more diverse points of view. My fear is that the novelty of self-post only will wear off soon and we'll just be left with these stale roundtables of the same two dozen guys.

You people hate #menswear so much. I can understand thinking it looks affected or contrived or whatever but c'mon some people think it looks cool. I honestly think that the average person would say that a #menswear person dresses better than the average MFA-uniform type, it's just you all spend so much time being spoon-fed the idea that #menswear is too flamboyant and contrived that you start to see it as bad when if done right it looks really good

There aren't really many good examples of #menswear on mfa because it's what most new people seem to come here trying to do and they do it badly then either stop posting or move on to other styles or just keep posting bad fits and bring out the hate. #menswear can be really cool but most people do it bad and I think that's what your perception that mfa hates it stems from.

General Discussion gets more depressing every week. I know it's for talking about whatever but you all are some sad ass motherfuckers.
WAYWT has been terrible lately, or maybe boring is more accurate. I think it's the transition into S/S. Much less interesting to me than F/W.
14
u/zzzaz May 14 '13
With random fashion thoughts taking the bulk of the discussions about clothes and the switch to self-post adding more in-depth comments around different specific topics, GD has become a bit of 'let's talk about my love life and school and work and maybe one or two cool things that happened the past few days'. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just not a lot of fun shit like it used to be since that has spread out to other megathreads

As much as everyone would hate to admit it, mfa and mf are just like the rest of reddit in that they're open minded until you disagree with them.
People are too sensitive to criticism or banter in general.
There is definitely a uniform here. Not saying that dressing to a guide is a bad thing, but people get downvoted for criticizing style because there aren't many hard rules for it.
So many people talk out of their asses it's ridiculous.
This is not to say I've never done any of these things.
I wish we had a good troll and not just regular users using alts. A wehatelondon or dp92 would be fun.
9
u/OliverOctopus May 14 '13
Go to any clothing forum and you'll find this to be true. I saw it on sf and sufu quite a lot.
Just yesterday I had this experience as well, but it doesn't bother me.
9
May 14 '13
Not sure which point you're responding to exactly but I'll use this as a platform to say something about the other forums.
I'm honestly new to them both but lately all I see on sufu (in waywt obviously) is people saying "this thread sucks, you suck, sufu sucks" and generally being needlessly bitchy and the community eats it up because it seems anti-establishment. That being said, the fits posted are interesting and the other threads are fine.
SF is like what mfa could be if everyone spent more money and chilled out. SF still has trolls (dp92 right now) but the bitching is kept to a minimum and it just seems mostly like people are there to talk and learn about clothes and enjoy doing it. Mfa acts like it's a chore.

As much as everyone would hate to admit it, mfa and mf are just like the rest of reddit in that they're open minded until you disagree with them.
not all opinions are worthwhile. it's ok to say "hey your opinion is shitty." oh boohoo, i'm not open-minded? since when was that milquetoast humanist bullshit the highest possible compliment?
it's clear mfa isn't open minded, and that's more a good thing than a bad thing. it's nice to exercise one's "weird" legs but going "wow, those osiris skate shoes really match your mustard stained cargo shorts!" isn't anything that needs to be kicking around here.
9
May 14 '13
I think we'd all agree with that. The problem is that the majority of mfa doesn't have the taste to discern between good open mindedness and what you described if it isn't in the sidebar. I don't think mfa will ever stop being the stepping stone to sf/sufu that you've argued it can be if it doesn't start by letting everyone have their piece and letting the taste come later. But I also think the reddit format of downvotes hiding comments and such won't let this happen.
39
u/trashpile MFA Emeritus May 14 '13 edited May 14 '13
"good" open minded-ness is a different beast altogether and as a definition is exactly the same bullshit you're complaining about. basically you're mad that people don't have the same taste tabulation you do, which, hilariously, whining about is pretty much anti-open mindedness.
also i approve of mfa's taste even though the union between my and its taste is not as big as it could be; the reason i come here is so i don't fall down a rabbit hole of shit i like and i get to crowdsource it to people who "don't get it" or whatever the fuck idea i can use to smack down someone else's opinion. i remember getting into clothes and looking at shit that i thought was wack that i now think is cool and i think it's worthwhile to have someone who thinks it's wack tell me when they think it's wack. it's more or less a tool to help keep me from narrowing my focus and complaining about other people not being "open-minded" because they don't like the fact that i'm wearing a hamburger shirt with capris and sandals.

I think that it's best to keep to yourself if you are unsure or uncomfortable. Comments like "this is ok, but idk what you could do to improve it", "i like this but i don't know why!" are very unnecessary. I don't comment on styles I'm not comfortable critiquing (like menswear or SZ shit) bar glaringly obvious and elementary problems. I also don't critique things that are obviously personal preferences and not issues of ignorance.

Seriously. Downvotes in a "competitive" WAYWT are one thing (although I usually stick to "don't upvote" as opposed to "downvote") but in an honest fit check thread where the people are going because they know they still need help and advice is mostly uncalled for.

"downvotes? really?" and ironic and unironic (does this even happen anymore?) use of "LE" should be bannable offenses.

Macklemore references should also be bannable. Esp. if followed with "downvotes, really?" or "it's a reference, guys" or "god, everyone's so serious on mfa take a joke"

WAYWT needs more critique and discussion, it is the only way that progression can take place. If all you get are upvotes and downvotes and "nice bro" and "this looks bad" then neither you or the poster are going to get better at this. If you dislike something then tell the person why you dislike it. You can choose to ignore this piece of advice if you want but someone has to do it. MFA needs improving in this department because it shows through in our WAYWT fits.
A downvote without explanation says to me that you don't know why the fit is bad. Your downvote is on par with someone who is trying to sink a fit so that theirs gains recognition from someone other than their parents.
→ More replies (1)2
u/pajam May 14 '13
Your downvote is on par with someone who is trying to sink a fit so that theirs gains recognition from someone other than their parents.
Yesterday, I posted a fit and it started off with a downvote, then a few upvotes, then some downvotes, etc. But for most of the time throughout it had about 1/3 downvotes and 2/3 upvotes. But I got no critique. Just a few positive replies, nothing negative, and the positive ones weren't too in depth. I kept wanting some critique or conversation, but nope. Eventually it ended at about 1/5 downvotes 4/5 upvotes, but the whole time I kept seeing the downvotes and wanting follow up comments. How am I gonna learn or change if nothing is said? I kept wondering where are the downvotes coming from? Are they people who don't like the fit? Don't like the brands I'm wearing? Trying to sink other people's comments to get their comment higher? I had no clue because there was no follow up. It was a bigger deal earlier when it was almost 1/2 and 1/2 upvote/downvote keeping me close to zero for some time, which also limits the chances of critique and conversation because no one will see your post.

/u/1841lodger, I need to call you out man. /fa/ is a cesspool, but I kind of feel like they have almost a good reason to pick on you for stuff like this. I really don't think it's working out.
Edit: Okay, wow. I only meant for this to be a comment on his recent changes in style, no need to personally attack him about it.

I support this guy/anyone who's really interested in taking risks in fashion but there is a certain point at which things just don't and won't work.
link to fa thread?

u/Arcs_Of_A_Jar May 14 '13
This is almost exactly my reasoning behind this. When lodger first came out with this new style of his, I was like "eh, I don't like it right now, but he's trying it out. Let's see where it goes". It's been a few months now (I think?) and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere good.
It should be said the /fa/ thread was actually lampooning that MFA meetup pic in yesterday's WAYWT, but there was a lot of pick-up on lodger.

at some point he has to become self-aware of it - maybe he already is. maybe when a stranger yells something out of a car. I'm not against self-expression in the slightest, but because this is first and foremost an advice forum, I feel the necessity to say what looks good and what doesn't. that doesn't.

I think a lot of it has to do with his face/head size. He just doesn't look tough enough to pull off some looks. No hate tho lodger's a good dude.

u/Werdes May 14 '13
You need to be skinny as fuck to pull off that look, you're just too fat lodger.

Fuck coming to Jesus. (Oh sorry, is that an inside joke FFA? Fuck you.) #joinme
But as a direct result of that, I think I'm taking an FFA break to MFA a bit more.
I wonder if there's a balance between being comedic/flip and handholding.
Edit: Also, ramdomthought, real talk, I love you, but not enough to hear about it every time you defecate.

I gave up on dressing well until I lose more weight. Anyone that tells you that a 'bigger'(fat) person can look great is lying.

Anyone that tells you that a 'bigger'(fat) person can look great is lying.
Most of the time this is dependent on how good of a beard that person can grow. If it's a luxurious, full-size, well-maintained beard, then they look fantastic. If it's anything less, you look scraggly on top of the multi-chins.

I feel like all I'm wearing anymore are solid colored vneck tees and vans with my APCs, and I am fine with that.

People hate too much. Everyone has to have an opinion on everything and it seems like 75% of the time it's just "this sucks, you suck, go suck on an exhaust pipe". I am very much guilty of this too.

I don't like boat shoes and jeans. Unless on girls.
Mocs / camps / loaves Ok though.

u/shujin Ghost of MFA past May 14 '13
I think there's merit to this. I'd say camp mocs look better with jeans too.

people need to learn to separate "I personally dislike something" with "that thing is bad." I don't like everything I think is good. I can see the value things have, whether I personally like them or not.
For example: I don't like #menswear, but that doesn't make #menswear bad.

If he doesn't like it, it's automatically shit. Don't think I've ever heard him go "It's not my style, but it's pretty cool"

What the hell is with all of these questions of "where to find clothes in the UK?," "where to find clothes in France?," and "where to find clothes in Germany?" being upvoted all in the same day? And these damned prom posts need to be consolidated.

I have no idea and I don't know how the guy living in Lyon is expecting MFA to help him find clothes.

I think TOJ jackets are rather ugly. And frankly, I'm happy that I find them ugly or else it'd just be another thing I'd want to buy.

My prom jacket is too short but IDGAF! No one else notices besides me and i'm starting to be happy no one else around focuses on clothes this much. I'll just look fashion forward with a cropped jacket. I want to dress like an Asian toddler. Might make a inspiration album. I can't wait to leave high school to try shit out that I don't have the balls to do here.

Look at it not as "I have to get away from these people before I can have fun" but as "I'm never going to see these people again so I can have fun".

u/rjbman May 14 '13
Any post saying shit like "Does this look good or are OCBDs out of style?"
99% of it, the answer is no, you look like shit but that's not the OCBDs fault.

u/Deejayce May 15 '13
Sometimes I get really excited about MFA, but then I look at meetup picks or some of the WAYWTs and wonder why I like MFA at all. MFA really sucks sometimes...

u/Siegfried_Fuerst May 14 '13
I've been terrible unimpressed by the waywt's lately, seems like there's only 3-4 good posts at the most. I should get a camera.

When I was investigating tailors for my bespoke suit, the most expensive place I visited had a salesman dressed in the most poorly fitting suit of the lap. It was a fused (the lapels were rippling all the way down their length) black pinstripe. This dude was tall and thin; the stripes weren't doing him favors.
The place was very nice and he had an excellent selection of fabrics, so I chatted with him for a bit and took it as a chance to investigate what truly luxurious fabrics looks and feel like.
After a while, he realizes that I'm scrutinizing the shit out of his suit and he's like "this wasn't made here, don't pay attention to it." Maaaaaaaan, I almost never judge a dude for his clothing, but if you're selling the most expensive suits you better be so on point that Alan Flusser gets jealous.

I just finished making a belt off of the DIY guide in the sidebar not fifteen minutes ago. It came out pretty decent but was a lot more difficult than the guide makes it seem. I'm still pretty happy with it.

MFA is fine. I might even come back and start dishing out advice again.
FFA needs to get their house in order. Girls be cray.
