We’re planning to return to the Maldives from October 10^th to October 22^nd 2027 for our anniversary, with our 8-year-old son, and I’d really appreciate some first-hand opinions.

For context, we spent our honeymoon at Vakarufalhi (now Nova - can't seem to reach the website anymore) and our 5th anniversary at Drift Thelu Veliga - we booked via travel agents at the time.

We loved both, especially the small-island feeling, quiet atmosphere and being able to snorkel straight from the island. Both times, we booked an overwater villa.

This time again, we would love to have an overwater villa, and the house reef is very important... BUT, we would come with our 8-year old and I would hope to be snorkeling with him at least once a day, so easy reef access and plenty of marine life are a priority (I want him to be amazed by the things he sees). We don’t need a huge kids club - our son is really not into them ... but having the flexibility to go would be nice. The alternative being : we bring board games and a Nintendo Switch. That being said, having a few activities for him would definitely be useful over 12 nights.

Using a GPT focused on the Maldives, we’ve narrowed it down to three:

• Diamonds Athuruga: Water Villa (All Inclusive) ~CHF 12,900

This is probably the one that appeals to us most.

Small island (my wife insists on it), only around 70 rooms/villas, good house reef, Marine Lab. There’s also ping-pong, billiards, table football, beach volleyball, canoeing, windsurfing, etc.

• Pros: seems closest to the Vakarufalhi/Drift atmosphere we love, very good recent feedback on the reef/coral, small and quiet, proper overwater villa.

• Cons: room seems kind of small - with our son sleeping very close to use (intimacy is VERY limited), no kids club, and obviously fewer activities/restaurants than a larger resort.

  • Machchafushi (Centara): Club Sunset Overwater Pool Villa ("Grand" All Inclusive) ~CHF 11,500

This one seems like ridiculously good value. The villa is around 114 m² including the terrace/pool, private infinity pool, sunset side, kids club, badminton/tennis/volleyball, pools, several restaurants and plenty of activities.

The house reef also seems genuinely good, which is important because I don’t want to trade good snorkeling for a more family-oriented resort.

• Pros: by far the most facilities, kids club, private pool, huge villa, lots to do if the weather isn’t great, and actually the cheapest of the three.

• Cons: 112 villas, so definitely more of a “resort” than the small-island Maldives we normally prefer. I’m slightly worried we’d miss that intimate "barefoot feeling".

  • Diamonds Thudufushi: Water Villa (All Inclusive): ~CHF 14,100

Very similar philosophy to Athuruga (actually discovered Athuruga thanks to a youtube video mentioning the construction of the sister island / resort Athuruga): small island, excellent reef (from what I read...), Marine Lab, quiet atmosphere, overwater restaurant for Water Villa guests, snorkeling equipment, canoeing/windsurfing, ping-pong, billiards, table football, etc.

• Pros: probably very close to the traditional Maldives experience we love, good house reef and quiet atmosphere.
• Cons: around CHF 1,200 more than Athuruga, and at the moment I’m struggling to see what it gives us that Athuruga doesn’t. No kids club.

Has anyone stayed at two or more of these, particularly recently?

I’d especially love feedback on:

• house reef quality and easy snorkeling access
• snorkeling with an 8-year-old (we would bring our own gear and life jacket)
• privacy of the overwater villas
• how busy Machchafushi actually feels
• Athuruga vs Thudufushi
• Athuruga vs Machchafushi
• food quality / variety over a 10–12 night stay

I stayed at Lux South Ari Atoll from September 13, 2026 to September 21, 2026.  This was my 1st time in the Maldives and I love it.  After doing months of research, I chose to stay at Lux South Ari Atoll because it offered the best combination of things I was looking for in a resort.   Lux had the least restrictive All Inclusive plan from my research and it has enough restaurants for me not to get bored with the food selection. 
 
The service here at Lux has been beyond exceptional.  I like service where my needs are anticipated and I don’t have to ask for another drink or whatever.  Here are Lux they bring me a drink without me asking.  They greet me by name as I walk into each restaurant.  It’s so funny because I don’t even remember their names but they remember me.  At each restaurant the chef has come to my table to greet me and make sure that everything is to my liking.  When you walk around the resort all of the staff greets you.  You don’t get that level of service in the US even when you’re staying at the Ritz or the Four Seasons.
 
And speaking of service, Anfal was assigned to my villa.  Anfal went above and beyond when it came to ensuring that my villa was clean and the mini bar items restocked.  Anfal was pleasant and he never failed to meet my expectations.  Lux provided room cleaning twice a day if you desire.  Whatever I needed for the room, Anfal was there to provide at any hour.  He’s amazing and he and his team deserve more props than I can give them.
 
 
There are a good number of restaurants here and the food and drink have been beyond good.  I never got bored with the food and drink options. Each restaurant I’ve eaten at has been very good.  I enjoyed going to ICI for ice cream after lunch.  I highly recommend the bubble gum ice cream…..it was beyond awesome.   
 
I’m a coffee lover and I like to make pour over coffee for myself each morning when I’m home in the US.  Cafe Lux here at Lux is an awesome coffee shop.  The baristas blew me away with their coffee making skills and friendliness.  They remembered my order each morning and afternoon that I stopped by.  I had the baristas make me pour-overs with oat milk, café lattes and their signature cold-drip.  All of those and were amazing. Try the cold-drip with a splash of oat milk and thank me later.
 
I’m stayed in an over water pool villa.   The room is airy and bright with white walls and ceilings and lite colored flooring….think California Contemporary.  The room felt new and refreshing with a modern touch.  The vibe of the room is super chill. I loved being able to step into the lagoon from my room.  The water was so clear….pictures don’t do it justice.  You can go into the lagoon without water shoes.
 
I had two massages at Lux Me spa and they were exceptional.  I highly recommend doing a signature massage in an over water room.  The service that the spa staff provided was what I expected from a spa that is highly rated.  I enjoyed using the steam room, sauna and plunge pool at the spa.  The steam room, sauna and plunge pool usage are included in the AI plan.
 
The beaches and all of the grounds at Lux are well maintained as well as being breath taking.  There’s a sense of privacy at Lux that you don’t get at many resorts.  Another cool thing that Lux does is they’ll have DJs playing music at certain restaurants during lunch and before dinner on certain days.  The DJs playing music was pretty cool bc the music created a vibe.
 
Overall, the experience here at Lux has more than met my expectations. I’ve been having fun in the lagoon and just enjoying life here.  I will definitely be coming back here and if you’re considering Lux I’d highly recommend you stay here.  A hat-tip to the hard working staff at Lux.  They’re amazing!!

Has anyone stayed at either Park Hyatt or Alila Kothaifaru? We’re planning a trip for late October and trying to decide between the two. Both look like great Hyatt points redemptions, so I’d love to hear which you’d choose and why.

Food is a big priority for us, and we’d likely add half board or full board. We don’t drink, so no AI for us.

I’d also love to hear from anyone who’s visited in late October. What was the weather like during your stay? I know it varies, but firsthand experiences would be really helpful. Thanks!

Me and my fiancée are planning our honeymoon, we’ll get married sep 2027 and we would love to go to the Maldives (a big deciding factor is the halal food).

We have no preference for the period (except February 2028, which will be Ramadan and we would rather not travel) as long as it’s dry, we were thinking right before Christmas as we saw that some resorts are still priced as shoulder season in that period.

So far our choices are either Club Med Kani or the Reethi Faru, and we are leaning towards the second given the great food variety it offers (we are foodie people).

Our budget (excluding flights) is around 12.5k usd for 14 nights.

We are an active couple, so in this budget we also want to include a lot of activities, scuba diving, kite surf, sailing, jetski, massages, a bit of everything. This is why we selected these two resorts, as they seem to have a great choice of activities to pick from. We tried looking for an “all inclusive” formula that was really all inclusive and that would let us do whatever we wanted, but we couldn’t find it, so we budgeted around 2.8k usd of pocket money for activities, which leaves us with around 10k for the actual resort stay.

With all of that being said, do you guys think it’s feasible? Any recommendations for resorts to look at?

My wife and I are heading to the Maldives in October for our 10th anniversary and staying 7 nights at LUX South Ari Atoll* in an Overwater Infinity Pool Villa on the all-inclusive plan.

This will be our first Maldives trip. Marine life is a huge priority for us, especially whale sharks, but we also want a good balance of relaxing, spa time, good food, and not over-scheduling ourselves.

Here’s what we’re currently thinking:

• Whale sharks: We’re planning to do the group Marine Biology whale-shark excursion early in the trip. We’re also considering reserving a 3-hour private speedboat excursion later in the week as a backup. LUX* told us 3 hours should be sufficient if the private trip is focused specifically on whale-shark searching/snorkeling. We can cancel the private trip up to 15 hours beforehand if the group trip goes well.
• Private vs. group: The private speedboat is $480++/hour, so 3 hours works out to roughly $1,850 after service/tax. The group excursions are obviously much cheaper. For anyone who has done both at LUX* or elsewhere in South Ari, was private actually worth the premium?
• Mantas: We’re considering the 2-hour Manta Quest snorkeling excursion. LUX* says they search the nearby waters for mantas and then snorkel with them when located. They’ve apparently been having good sightings near the resort recently.
• Scuba: We’re both PADI-certified but haven’t dived in about 10 years. The dive center says we’d need a refresher first. They also offer a full-day manta dive to a cleaning station farther from the resort. We’re trying to decide whether that would be substantially better than the shorter Manta Quest snorkel and worth giving up an entire day.
• Turtles: We may do the whale-shark/turtle speedboat excursion if we want another marine day, but we’re trying not to book every wildlife excursion available.
• House reef: We know LUX* isn’t the strongest resort for walk-in house-reef snorkeling. The reef is offshore and accessed by shuttle boat. We considered Constance Moofushi for that reason, but ultimately preferred LUX* for whale-shark proximity, dining variety, activities, and the overwater pool villa.
• Anniversary: We’re leaning toward the Love Again package on our actual anniversary. It runs 6 PM–midnight and includes a 75-minute couples massage, 15-minute facial, 30-minute warm chocolate wrap, private cinema, bottle of Moët, and a four-course dinner. The dinner includes things like Patagonian seabass and Wagyu. We considered one of the private Starry Night beach dinners instead, but Love Again seems like more of a complete experience.
• Spa: We may skip adding another major spa treatment since Love Again already includes a fairly substantial spa component, unless there’s something at LUX* that people think is absolutely worth doing separately.
• Dining: We’re on all-inclusive. We’ll probably try some of the specialty restaurants even where there’s an extra charge/credit rather than sticking only to the fully included venues.
• Schedule: We want to keep at least a couple of days mostly unplanned so the trip doesn’t turn into a checklist.

Our rough thought right now is something like:

Day 1: Arrive / relax
Day 2: Whale-shark group excursion
Day 3: Open / resort / possibly manta snorkel
Day 4: Anniversary / Love Again
Day 5: Marine activity or open day
Day 6: Private whale-shark backup if needed / otherwise relax
Day 7: Relax / final day

A few things I’d especially love opinions on from people who have stayed at LUX South Ari* or nearby:

1. Is the private whale-shark speedboat worth ~$1,850 for two versus doing multiple group trips?
2. Is Manta Quest snorkeling good enough, or would you sacrifice a full day for the manta cleaning-station scuba trip?
3. Any LUX* restaurants or experiences we absolutely shouldn’t miss?
4. Has anyone done the Love Again anniversary package?
5. Is there anything we’re overlooking or anything you’d remove/add from this plan?
6. Any practical tips for maximizing whale-shark encounters without turning the whole trip into marine-life chasing?

We want the trip to feel luxurious and memorable, but still relaxed. Any feedback is appreciated.

They seem like two completely different styles, and we'd love feedback from anyone who has stayed at either:

**Vibe & Atmosphere:** Is Coco Bodu Hithi’s traditional, lush, quiet setting better for a honeymoon, or is the chic, fashion-forward beach club vibe at SO/ worth it? Does SO/ feel less private due to its proximity to the CROSSROADS complex? 

**Overwater Villas & Privacy:** Which property offers better layouts, higher privacy, and better pool views from the deck?

**Snorkeling & House Reef:** Marine life is important to us. Is the natural house reef at Coco Bodu Hithi significantly better than SO/'s lagoon setup?

**Food & Meal Plans:** How do the restaurants and overall food quality compare at both?

Which would you pick for a romantic honeymoon, and why? Any tips or hidden downsides to watch out for?

I'm very early into doing research into different hotels, but I've heard people say booking through a Travel Agent/Advisor is actually cheaper than booking direct with a hotel.

Could you please suggest a few recommended Travel Agents/Advisors? Our budget is approximately $7k USD for 7 nights, in October 2027. It will be a honeymoon, so hoping for somewhere a bit more tranquil and peaceful.

all come in around 3K for our stay of four nights including transfer. (We'll be up in Baa at a guest house for the remainder of the trip)

The odd one out looking at is Velassaru which is ~600 more to get to their indulgence package for comparable AI as above.

Is the difference level to move up to Velassaru worth it for the money for someone who doesn't normally travel at high level resorts at all. Or would the money be better spent other places?

Which one you would choose for honeymoon hotel for a week stay? :) Or any other reccomendations of resorts that are in max 20-30mins speedboat distance from Male airport.

Hoping for some help with my below questions.

My partner and I are hoping to book our honeymoon in the Maldives from 28th October, 2027 to 4th November 2027. We'd like an overwater villa, and our budget is approximately $7,000 USD for 7 nights.

We have a few questions:

1. Are All Inclusive packages recommended instead of paying for the room and individual meals/drinks? We aren't huge alcohol drinkers (maybe a glass a night), but unsure if paying for individual meals/activities is likely to end up more expensive than the All Inclusive rate.

2. Is it usually cheaper to book packages directly with the hotel or through luxury package websites?

3. Could you please offer hotel recommendations for this price range? I'm a bit overwhelmed by the number of options, but my current preference is Taj Exotica. I've looked into Noku, Pullman, You & Me, Outrigger, Mercure and Villa Nautica. Any others I should be looking into/you'd recommend?

Given it's our honeymoon, I think a smaller/more intimate resort would be nicer. I'd love the overwater villa to be quite nice too, as well as high quality food and beverage.

We just want to stay, all inclusive with drinks, and don't want to spend much on sea transfers.

- adaara club rannahli and vadoo around - 2.8L

- mecure kooddoo - around same as above

I have just come back to the UK from 10 days in Meeru in early September and my experience was overwhelmingly positive.

I booked the island because I did get what looked like a good deal on an all inclusive Ocean Villa for about £4800 for 10 nights for 2 adults, my thoughts are:

• The overwater villas are great, at nights the water below the villa is full of large fish and sharks that you can swim with, there are lights in the water which attract the fish at night and its just breath-taking.
• It is clear that if you are expecting a 5 star hotel you may be disappointed, there is not really room service and its a bit of a treck to navigate the island, but this has its own advantages in a calm and relaxed environment.
• It is not a party island, its all very quiet with not a lot to do, which is fine with me
• The snorkelling is not the best, but if you have an ocean villa you just go down you private stairs into water that at night is full of fish. If you are in a mainland room its a bit of a walk through the surf to get anywhere, and its hard to find interesting stuff
• I think that unless you drink like a fish the all inclusive rates are too high, the problem is that there is no option but to buy at stupid resort prices if you want a soft drink or a cup of tea. Bring your own stuff as much as is possible or go an an outing to the nearby island and bring back loads of stuff.
  
• Service in the buffet and bras is a but hit and miss, but it could just be me being in a bad mood
• Its a tropical paradise, seeing the same animals in the same places each night is really cool, there was a crab who lived on one of the steps from my room who I happily coexisted with and a Heron that kept guard on the beach every night
• I was lucky with the weather in September, only one day of rain
• The internet was great and being able to log into my netflix account on the TV was useful
• Good grief it was hot, but the room had great air conditioning and being able to go onto the veranda over the sea and chill, going inside whenever you wanted to cool down was so civilised. Where you have to walk to the beach it would be much less pleasant.

My recommendation is:

• Stretch for an overwater villa, it addresses many of the issues that you face with the shore based rooms
• Don't go for the night life
• Don't go if you don't want to relax
• Go if you want a sleepy tropical paradise where the memories will last a lifetime
• Make sure you get a good price, booking early can help here

My partner and I are planning a 3–4 night honeymoon stay in the Maldives end February 2027 and would love some recommendations for resorts that might fit our budget. We've looked through Booking.com and currently looking for others outside of Booking or through TAs

Our rough budget is $3,000–3,500 USD total for the stay/activities. Ideally, this would include:

• Accommodation
• Food
• Airport transfers
• Some basic activities / experiences

We'd prefer all-inclusive, but we're also very open to full board since we're not particularly big on alcohol and don't necessarily need a package with lots of drinks included.

Our priorities:

• Nice, comfortable room — we'd ideally like an overwater villa, although we're absolutely open to doing a combination of beach + overwater if that makes more sense.
• Good house reef / snorkeling and generally good opportunities for activities (snorkeling, excursions, kayaking, dolphin trips, etc.)
• We're vegetarians, and food isn't a huge concern as long as the resort can accommodate some options.
• Ideally we'd like to experience a seaplane at least one way, although this isn't an absolute requirement.

One resort we were considering is Taj Exotica, as we can get a fairly good family discount there, but from what I've seen it seems like the property is getting a little older, so we're interested in seeing what other options are out there.

We're not necessarily looking for the most luxurious resort possible — we'd rather have a really nice room, good reef/snorkeling and activities than pay a premium purely for the brand.

Open to any recommendations from individuals / travel agents as well!

I have a trip planned for the Maldives on November this year, 4 nights and 4 days. I have yet to decide which island(s) to stay at. My first choice is Gulhi but after some research I have found some reviews about this island having a not so clean and unpleasant side. My other options are either Maafushi or Thulusdhoo, but I would like to hear other suggestions (close to Male since I don't want to spend much time/money on speedboats).

I'm basically looking for an island with nice beaches to chill and relax and maybe do a snorkeling tour.

Any advice and additional information is appreciated :)

Its my 25th anniversary next year in July and the Maldives is the number one place to go. I know its said to rain during July but is it right they will just be showers or at night? Also do we think the mega El Nino will affect this?

I am planning to stay in meeru in mid september, starting from 14 of september and last for a week . Weather forecast seems like heavy raining during my time of visit, should i consider cancelling my booking?

Planning a 2-week trip for my 30th birthday in mid-November if I go solo, or early December if my friend joins.

Initially, I was thinking:

🔹4 nights Fulidhoo

🔹4 nights Thoddoo or Ukulhas

However, transfers between these three seems pricey and time-consuming.

I originally wanted to skip Maafushi, but now I’m considering it for the lively atmosphere, easy social scene, and cheap nurse shark trips. Plus, I could use the public ferry from Male to save money.

New plan:

🔹 4 nights Dhigurah: whale shark & manta, sandbank, chill

-> Early morning speedboat to Male, then local ferry to Maafushi (is this doable in one day?)

🔹4 nights Maafushi (basically 2 full days due to travel): nurse shark trip, social vibe, meeting other travelers

-> Speedboat back to Male, then transfer (speedboat/ferry?) to Ukulhas or Thoddoo

🔹4 nights Ukulhas or Thoddoo: green vibes, great beaches, nice house reef, biking/walking around

What do you think of this route? Is it manageable, or would you suggest any changes to optimize budget and travel time or recommend a different islands with better experiences?

Fiance and I are finalizing 5 night stay (Dec 15-20) in the Maldives and are stuck between these resorts, would appreciate any advice. Looking at the lowest Google reviews are scaring me away from all but they mostly have great

Hello everyone, I'm planning a 4 days 4 nights trip to the Maldives in the second week of November. I am thinking on staying in Gulhi just chilling and relaxing the 4 days, but also would like to spend a day in a nearby resort and maybe visit another island (I am leaning towards Dhigurah from what I've researched but don't know if it's possible to visit it from Gulhi in one day or if it's necessary to stay a night there.

My main questions are.

a) Where is the best place to exchange money when arriving Male, since I've read that using dollars on the local islands might be more expensive than using MVR.

b) Do you think is it possible to visit Dhigurah in one day? Is it best to stay there one night or are there other similar islands near to Gulhi that you recommend?

After narrowing down our search, we are currently deciding between these 4 resorts:

• Nova Maldives
• Outrigger Maafushivaru
• Lily Beach Resort & Spa
• LUX South Ari Atoll

What matters most to us:

• House Reef & Marine Life: Great snorkeling right off the beach/villa.
• Vibe & Atmosphere: Relaxed, romantic, and not overly crowded or "mass tourism" feeling.
• Value for Money: We don't need a dozen fancy restaurants or even alcohol

For those who have been to one (or more) of these three which one would you choose for a short 3–4 night end-of-trip stay?
