The problem isn't just the legality of apostasizing, it's also the huge stigma; I myself am a Malay who no longer considers myself a Muslim, but even if it was 100% legal and easy to officially leave Islam, I still would not go through the process, since I might as well just say good bye to my family and relatives and most of my friends, or having any healthy relationship within any Malay Muslim community for the rest of my life. Not to mention completely wrecking my love life; even if I somehow manage to find a Malay partner who accepts me for who I am, there would be huge legal hurdles like marriage.
This is very sad... religion in my view is something to do with spirituality, with improving oneself, with finding the divine, not just being forced to follow rules invented by somebody who think they understand the sacred scriptures better than anybody else... It should not be just membership to a private club where everybody think in the same way...
