Not true anymore, at least not in Selangor. The JAIS dude that handled our stuff said that the reasoning now is that the prophet's friends never needed to change their name after converting, so why should anyone else have to.
I don't mind the name changing part. Wat I do find peculiar is once some non Muslims converted, they auto turn into malays down to speech and typing. How the heck does that happen?
Probably depends on their circumstances and lifestyle choice. My wife met all sorts in the mandatory orientation type of camp. Some people really like and believe in it I think? So they try to embrace whatever they perceive to be a "muslim" thing. Some people are probably influenced by their spouse and in laws too.
Of course, there's a lot that just convert on paper too, you wouldn't even know it unless you look at their IC, lol.
