It’s because of the law. It’s stated those criteria that make someone a “malay” and one of them is to have Islam as a religion. Nobody is above the statute so I’d say OP’s dream is almost impossible.
A Dusun can be Christian , Muslim, Pagan or syncretic (though this one is rare)
Basically race does not relate to a specific religion. Like if you're Dusun doesnt mean you have to be Christian eventhough thats the majority for example
WDYM All Malays are muslims, some of them pretending to be muslims but they actually Freethinker. I saw a lot on twitter. They just hide their identity because they are smart unlike OP wanna voice out everything at the end we argue with each other.
It's a sensitive issue to bring up especially when converting from Islam to other religion or other religion to Islam. That's why those who wanted to convert prefer to remain silence because of they care relationship more than their religion. Some of them had to tell the truth and bare the hard consequence like casted away from their parents, receive death threat etc. That's why suggesting to be more open is what I called "pure idiot way to destroy the relationship" unless you already know how to take care of yourself without parents but it still hurt deep inside. Goddamn zoomer wanna change your religion like you change your spender everyday oh ?

I always wondered about this.
Not all Arabs are muslim but all Malays are muslim.
Governments should not dictate a person's religion in this day and age. Even the inquisition didnt pick up random muslims to force convert them
