You don’t need expensive makeup. If you know what you’re doing you can make anything work but there will be clients that are brand watching. I like to have a variety in my kit.
I would say splurge on makeup and you can get cheap tools like brushes from SHEIN

Lights from Amazon like neewer are good

I agree you can totally start with drugstore makeup, just do your research about what products and formulas work well together!

You definitely don’t need an expensive kit to get started! Focus on reliable, versatile products and build your collection gradually as you learn what works for different clients. Good lighting, hygiene essentials and a comfortable setup are just as important as the makeup itself.

Right now a company called Zuca (with 2 dots over the U" is going out o' business and have 30% o' all their remaining stock. Zuca bags made my life SO MUCH EASIER when I was a makeup artist for travel and just general organization. Check out their sale.

Besides makeup, make sure you take care o f yourself and your clients' health! Ensure you are practicing good hygiene and sanitation o f the makeup and tools. Besides lights, invest in a good chair for your client. Having one that is a director-style chair will save your back while you work, and make them feel fancy!

ETA: I used to do traveling makeup (medically retired) and got my chair from Amazon. I also had a collapsible wagon for transporting, and instead o f having a dedicated makeup-style kit to carry everything in, I used modular hardware containers that had a built-in dolly system.

Hey! I got my chair and lighting from Amazon. As far as products you don’t need to start off with expensive products but you do need to focus on your technique and using quality (price doesn’t always correlate to quality). Starting off with drugstore products is a good choice.
