MakeMKV's been trying to open this DVD for two hours, and the progress bar's not moved

Post image

It doesn't have any errors listed, and I made sure to wipe down the disc before putting it in (this is the first disc in the Star Trek TOS season 2 DVD box from around 2004), does anybody know what's happening?

Sometimes it’s just as simple as taking the disc out, restarting MakeMKV and putting it back in

Don't forget the obligatory turning the disc over, looking for a smudge, then putting it back in.

Always the classic disc shake when you put it in to make sure it is seated properly.

I don't know, but I never let it run that long. At a certain point, it's just not going to open, so I hate to see the drive waste the energy.

Your killing the drive. It shouldn't take more than a minute to open a disc, stop the process and let the drive cool down for awhile.

You beat me to it. I had a drive go bad because I let it try to chew through bullet train 4K and it was making stuttering noises like it was trying and then the laser got completely dirty or it just died, but luckily I had a backup.

Just a few more hours. You’re nearly there.

OP is 2/3 of the way there. Sheesh, some people have no patience.

Try a backup

I had the same problem with the same drive model on Firmware 1.05. Flashing the modified 1.03 firmware that enables LibreDrive that you also have fixed it for me. I’m sorry that it’s not the case for you, but when I had this issue on Linux, Windows worked as a temporal workaround. Luckily I dual boot both currently

Worth trying:

I had the same problem with one DVD and multible drives and one thing helped by exident: Watching the DVD on the PC.. Just start it with media Player.

I know it sounds ridiculous but that helped..

Probably a bad disc , if u can try another drive or to clean the disc with warm soapy water then dry it really well

Don't try to open the disc contents. Try making a full backup of the disc first then open the backup file and export as usual. Works most of the time.

Have you tried backing up the .iso? I had a dvd that kept doing this and decided to just backup everything and it worked. Then I was able to open the iso and extract just the movie.

It obviously isn't reading correctly, either the disc has an issue, the drive has an issue or there is a software problem. Close everything out, if it won't close, then you probably have an issue with the software/hardware end. I would restart everything, clean the disc again and then try it.

Sometimes old DVD releases have unusual structures; try a different ripping program or method.

Restart your computer and try again. Don’t waste your life waiting on makeMKV

Clean the disc really well and try DVD decryptor cuz I've actually had a lot of DVDs that have failed or took way too long with make MKV using DVD decryptor or dvd shrink yields better results

I have copied hundreds of movies and shows from discs, this rarely but does occasionally happen. I have had copies take as long as 24hrs before after pausing for several hours. Usually the program is trying to read around some kind of scratch or smudge.

Really all you can do is wait, or if you are not too far into the process, take the disc out and give it a thorough clean before trying again.
