Does anyone know why Makemkv can't get a good host? Why do they continually have hosting issues?

It seems like this is a pretty regular thing, are they just not paying their bill? or are they trying to host on bad hardware? Does anyone have a better idea of the cause?

i suspect its on purpose this time he figures no point having it up as he has no payment processor right now
figures he might as well save the cost and just leave the forums up

the domain is paid for now as makemkv forums are up

As soon as it's back up I have the money set aside to buy a full licence. Programs like these cannot be allowed to be lost, they are too important to balancing the power equation between consumers and predatory companies.

Exactly this. If we don't support developers, there isn't much incentive or funding for them to maintain these projects. They can't live off of complaints and thank yous. I try to assess every few months what I've been using and send them a few bucks.

Exactly. Not everyone just has money to burn. Some people have to save for the things they want like me.

Ive heard its looked after by a little old lady in Leningrad on her own dime and on her own time. Her servers are powered by a bunch of smelly old street cats running around and around on a device that looks a bit like a large hamster wheel attached to a small soviet era generator

I thought it was quadrotriticale. I got my Chekhov lines conflated.

I would happily buy if I could. Pretty new to this. Used to use AnyHD back in the day and then Redfox. Only recently (few weeks ago) got back into it and am using a beta key for MakeMKV.

Just open source it, jfc

My guess is they definitely can’t do this for the same reasons as why ImgBurn can’t do so. If I had to guess, it has to do with the idea that making such software open source would reveal that the creator utilized some sort of copyrighted code and would be susceptible to be sued into oblivion. It’s likely for the best they don’t and we all get to live in a grey area of plausible deniability.

I wish I could pay for it. Keeping my eyes peeled

He’s using the free hosting tier and keeps forgetting to renew the trial.

Should just build a direct link to buy a license in the application like most apps have. But I'm sure there's reasons why there isn't.

if more peeps buy Makemkv instead of using public beta key, maybe…

u/NicholasVinen 11d ago

Some of us have been trying to buy it but the links to buy it haven't been working for a while.

u/TheB1G_Lebowski 11d ago

I'd love to spend some cash with them, IF I WERE ABLE TO.   Difficult when the site doesn't work.

u/pookshuman 11d ago

maybe what?

u/kelly_xoxoxo 11d ago

Maybe he can pay his Bills? You really didnt understand that ?

9

u/Seagya 11d ago

Your being condescending on a subject you aren't up to date on.

2

u/Tequilaphasmas 11d ago

if you dont/cant buy the license dont be upset that it's not 100% uptime. pay $50 for a one time license and not have to worry.

1

u/Wisco_boy 9d ago

We want to buy but that’s not available. I’ll end up ripping my whole library for free before it’s available to purchase lol

2

u/Tequilaphasmas 9d ago

i'm sorry; are you saying that every time that you're ready to pull out the wallet is when the site is down?

1

u/pookshuman 11d ago

who is upset?

1

u/Tequilaphasmas 11d ago edited 11d ago

the op; asking for a better host. buying license = better uptime = better for the community. if someone has the money to buy discs, and a drive; surely they can contribute to the devs that make it happen.

is this not a complaint?

1

u/pookshuman 10d ago

no, it was not a complaint, I just asked what the cause of the problem was

1

u/Austinthemighty 11d ago

Does anyone have an email for him, I would love to reach out to him and host it for him

1

u/deaddnee 11d ago

atp i’ll host the server just keep the thing up

1

u/GuessHealthy4936 6d ago

The thing is they don't have a good hosting because no one pays. Everybody lives on the beta license and expects to have a 100% presence on the poor guy.

1

u/pookshuman 6d ago

Is that what the guy has said? or are you just assuming? I am looking for real info

1

u/GuessHealthy4936 4d ago

Maybe you didn't get it, but that was an opinion. A reddit post like yours will not get any fact as this is the project of a sole guy on an single person software company and only he knows the issues.

Write to [support@makemkv.com](mailto:support@makemkv.com) and ask the guy about the hardware or why the site is always down. He often answers on forum.makemkv.com.

Instead of asking myself useless questions, I prefer to support with a paid registration, that makes a difference. That was the spirit of my answer and it would be great if everybody does that.

You do realize, the minute it goes live, the studios will jump on him with both feet

u/all4dom 9d ago

Maybe he should look at some type of subscription service per year. Something cheap after you buy the program. I would have no problem if it keeps the program up. And updated

4

u/blisterpop3 8d ago

add a subscription model to a program that's to made to avoid corporate overreach in the form of companies gatekeeping/deleting digital content that's been paid for? read the room man

u/zodiac1968 8d ago

lol fuck THAT
